Well, folks, I just bought the set yesterday (Had my sister pick it up for me while I was at work). I've only watched about three episodes worth (skipping around to different parts), and I don't have the time or energy right now (11 PM...) to go in-depth about any of it. But here's my honest impression so far.

The set is great.

Most of y'all are being way too picky and stingy about this.

Didn't those dubs do variations of Head-Cha-La? Don't know about the German dub, but the Spanish does indeed have a variation of the song and not the original version. Timo could probably clear things up about the German dub.

Every single dub so far has used a variant of Head-Cha-La, considering none of them have the original instrumental (If that's what you mean. If not, forgive me, I read your question wrong.)

I really don't see why FUNimation wouldn't allow Cha-La Head Cha-La and yet put in Zenkai Power (Considering the fact Head-Cha-La is a pretty famous anime song, you'd think they'd include it).

Hopefully it's just a mistake and nothing too serious.

TOEI has no high quality version of the original Japanese instrumental Cha-La.
Some dubs use this bad low quality instrumental version (Mexican, Brazilian, Hebrew, Euskera and the Valencian dub) and other companies produced own instrumental versions for the dubs (German, Castilian, Catalan and the Galician dub).

I just got the set myself. I've been watching the full-screen version a lot recently so the widescreen cropping is glaringly apparent to me. I can't notice any 'extra' footage on the sides, it just looks like the 4:3 version zoomed in. Also they said they were cleaning up all the dirt and scratches frame by frame? I can't see any evidence for this; if you watch the HEAD-CHA-LA intro, you can see dirt and scratches speckling all over the picture. There is an especially large scratch on the right of the screen just as Goku flys away into the distance on kinton (SP?).

The picture also looks like they have indeed cranked up the brightness/contrast to remove the grain. It's especially apparent when you first see Radditz; the different skin tones all look very over-saturated.

Good points are the subtitles and better encoding. I feel annoyed that I have to buy this set to get a decent subbed version of Dragon Ball Z. I don't want to have to resort to the 'Chinese Box Sets' but I'd rather put up with dodgy translations than missing footage.

Yeah. I've seen them. I only recommend them to anyone who knows Dragonball well enough that they can translate the translations into what they really mean.

Yeah, I'd take missing footage over crappy translations any day. The only time I buy bootlegs is with anime that gets a crappy dub and no Japanese version available in the US. Pretty much all 4kids shows, like Sonic X. The missing footage isn't worth buying bootlegs with crappy translations over, or even bootlegs with great translations. (if there's such a thing) I think you should consider otherwise, or atleast wait to see if FUNi starts over releasing DBZ in fullscreen. Better yet, get the R2 releases and rip Steve Simmons' subtitles from them and put them onto the R2s. I myself am waiting until the entire show is out in a consistant style, though I'm going to wait to see if a non-widescreen release is made. If not I'm just going to buy these, if and when they release the entire show in this format.

Well, if they're going to have to know how to translate them, why not just go for the R2 DVDs, instead of bootlegs?

They're a lot cheaper and if you want "the true R2 experience"

you can just turn off the subs and go with nothing instead of halfassed English.

My enthusiasm toward what DVD release to go with has died down tremendously over the past few days, though. In the end, I'd rather read edited Viz manga over watching badly-subbed DragonBox bootlegs, cropped FUNi releases, or DragonBox singles that are either overpriced, have overpriced shipping, or take about a month to get one volume of with decent price and decent shipping.

The thing is that I've read the manga and seen the whole series a few times, so I know what's going on. I speak a little Japanese and know the characters' names well enough to not be bothered by inaccurate subs. That's why it's so much more painful to see cropping as opposed to babel-fish style translations. I might end up just buying the dragonbox if I save up enough money.

Same here when it comes to knowing what's going on and everyone's names and such. Though I love the Japanese soundtrack/BGM/scre of the series, I hate having to sit through five minutes of the show that's adapted from a single manga page that only had three panels. It ruins my fond meories of reading these fast-paced action scenes.

Besides, BGM CDs and manga aren't out of my limited price range.

Actually the English subbed Dragon Box bootlegs have the most accurate subtitles I have ever seen, with translated names such as Emma-Daio and Saiya-jin not to mention they wearn't actually stolen from a different fansubber... if I recall episodes 1-67 were the only ones which were accuratelly subbed. *You may have originally seen them on youtube which were the so called RAW Dragon Box episodes*

If you wanted to compare the translation with Funimation's subbed ones, for instance Vegeta's speech to Goku... I wouldn't mind.

Do you have any clips or links to clips of these apparently really accurate subs? I had no idea bootlegs would work so well.
