I fully agree with the suggestion; I really enjoyed YoungJiji's AF.
I found this on the "Fan Manga Recommendations" page, and it's also really good for GT fans: http://www.sebliet.com/p/manga-en.html (Dragon Ball EX). It's apparently ongoing but I don't know how often the updates are. It's also free to read online from that link (their official site I guess). The thing I can say about it is that the translation isn't great but the overall manga is still pretty cool. Also warning: Evil Goku.

I have a few horrendous-looking bootlegs that I got in a Bealls Outlet as a child. I wonder how bootlegs made it into a legit store?

I've just finished reading Jiji's DBAF. For a fan made job, it's really good. He does reuse some panels from the DBZ Manga but the storytelling is solid in my opinion. Every character gets some love, I cried a little ( a lot) when Goku came back. Here's another suggestion, I read it while listening to the GT Japanese BGM:

I was able to mark down different tracks for different situations (Someone gets a power up, Someone dies, something funny happens, Something really sad happens, New enemy) and it made my experience 100 times better. When Goku came back I've used this one:

I read the manga online and I thought it was a great read. I read it while playing Kai, Battle of Gods, and GT Music in the background. If we lived in an alternate Universe where Dragon Ball Super or the new movies existed, I would be happy to call this story my head canon's GT Sequel.
