Too much shine on the characters equals a thumbs down for me.

I just wish that Toei hired the "New-type" animation team earlier. Some episodes before the Buu saga would've looked really good if they did it.

The best animation of the entire series was an episode of the Cell games, when Goku and Cell were fighting each other.

I don't have an exact episode number, but the fighting was frantically paced and looked fantastic. Excellent choreography, not just rat-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta style clashing in mid-air. I've always hated that.

A close runner-up would have to be SSJ2 Goku vs. Kid Buu. Wow. Excellent animation, and super-excellent choreography.

Also, I just remembered another great example. It was during the Garlic Jr. arc, (very underrated storyline actually) when Gohan and Kuririn were fighting Piccolo I believe. The first time I saw that episode I was awe-struck by the animation.

Yeah, the Pale Cartoony animation work is hideous. I can't stand the way that substudio draws the character's faces, particularily Mr. Satan's. I used to think Triangle Crap Guy was the worst (and it certainly is a considerable eyesore when you know there's better), but Pale Cartoony is... guhh, the off-placement of the character's noses and... oh, I don't even want to talk about it.
Yeah, shannarafan -- I knew that shot was used again in Z somewhere (it was this particular time I saw the actual episode it was from when it finally sank in just how jaw-dropping incredible it is), I just couldn't remember where. I thought maybe it was a flashback... heck, maybe it also is shown in that filler scene before the Cell Games where Kame Sennin is explaining what the Tenkaichi Budokai is... to a a group made mostly of characters who had taken part in it :)
Also, I have indeed noticed the tendency of the better studio/s to put very thick black outlines on the characters. This is quite prominent in Tree of Might.

Shoot, maybe I should have just posted this whole thing in that "Different animation styles" topic...
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.
