Thoughts on Monaka now?

Thing is though, they're both Gods (like actual gods, not just guys with God forms), and are both overwhelmingly stronger than Goku and Vegeta. My best guess is that Beerus thought they might need another mortal being, who's stronger than them but seemingly closer to them in strength than to Beerus/Whis, to help inspire them to go further...it just backfires incredibly when everyone except Goku ends up figuring out the ruse, and Champa actually had people with interesting enough abilities to keep things interesting for Goku/Vegeta, and at least one the one guy (Hit) who would keep them striving to get stronger too.

Hasn't it been stated that Whis isn't actually a God?

I'm pretty sure Goku and Vegeta are gods, they just don't have complete ki control to know it.

Monaka's pointless. Goku and Vegeta already have benchmarks of power to strive towards with Beerus and Whis, there's no reason to invent another one.

I think it wouldn't bother me so much if Beerus hadn't put him into the tournament. He seems to take the whole thing a lot more seriously than almost everyone else present doesn't, yet he brings in a random guy and posses him as Monaka. He could've just had Whis hunt down some other fighter from U7, have Whis train him and basically fulfill the same function without looking like a total jackass.

I wonder if Whis and Vados could have been contestants themselves. Or maybe Beerus and Champa had a gentleman's agreement not to do that.

I like Monaka. He, along with Jaco, provide this sort of blue collar perspective of the Dragon World. I actually found myself enjoying the Copy Vegeta filler arc because of the little scenes of those two just going about their jobs.
