Well, she is supposed to be bitchy.
Good... I don't like "bitchy," so I don't like Bulma. I'm not supposed to like her just because she's supposed to be that way. If she wasn't supposed to be that way, she wouldn't be written to be that way.

I much prefer Tights's personality.

It depends. I also don't like bitchy people in real life, obviously, but fiction is not real life and a bitchy character can be wildly entertaining. Cordelia in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, comes to mind. She was incredibly bitchy but so hilarious.

Anyway, my point is that she is written as bitchy for light-hearted comedic purposes. That was the objective. It's much more an issue of failing that objective (being funny) than being bitchy on itself.

Bitchy is fine as long as it's not her only personality trait, which like Cordelia, it isn't. I like when characters are complicated and don't always have good qualities, even heroes. The thing that Cordy and Bulma have that stops them from being just bitchy is they have plenty of admirable qualities. Chichi is problematic because she's so one note until later in the series.

To an extent. She was very one note early in season 1 which would have been very uninteresting and wore out its welcome had that been all she was. But they began developing her very early on. In the episode "Out of Mind, Out of Sight" we begin to see that there's something more to her after she reveals to Buffy that even though she's popular, she still feels alone. It's Bulma's intelligence and occassional warmth that allow the audience to like her.

The point is that in a fictional work someone can be bitchy and we still like her because she's hilarious (or because of another reason) even though we wouldn't like her in real life. Cordelia in particular could have been written off at the end of season 1 or 2 and she would have still been hilarious.

We can feel that way about Bulma or not, it depends. Several bitchy characters can have different nuances, and we can, for example, find one hilarious and another not really despite both being bitchy. Bulma in particular is written as bitchy for comedic purposes, so the most important factor is whether or not the humor works for us.

That's a matter of taste, I generally don't find that sort of comedy funny if it's just surface level bitchiness or douchiness. It loses its luster very quickly unless there's something more to the character. For instance, if Cordelia on Buffy or Andy from The Office didn't have layers to their characters then I wouldn't be entertained by those characters.

I agree. Bulma's "bitchiness" might have been amusing at first, but it got tiresome after a while. She always seemed to bring the mood down. I remember laughing ONCE at it and it was with the Ocean dub. They were on fake Namek and I think it was during the avalanche inside a cave scene. She screamed out at Kuririn something along the lines of, "Hurry up, Stupid!" (I am not 100% sure, but she called him "stupid") and just the way she emphasized "stupid" was hilarious. Other than that, she annoyed me. She's just verbally abusive. While it's quasi-funny when she gets frustrated that she can't ride the Kinto Un or something like that, I guess her annoying qualities outweigh any purpose that her mannerisms serve -- at least for me.

As I said: I much prefer Tights, which I didn't know I would. But after reading Jaco, she was awesome. On the flip side, Jaco was douchy, but he doesn't bother me the way Bulma does because it's not so overbearing.

I'm Dragon Ball, Lunch was great, 18 was awesome, and at least Chichi had her moments (when we learn that she was teaching Goten to fight in honor of Goku, I guess), but Bulma was always written as very one-dimensional and that one dimension was "bitchy." I think end-of-Z Pan won me over in two episodes than Bulma did in the entire series.

There's no way Chichi had more moments than Bulma. Bulma is less abrasive and Chichi doesn't chill the hell out until after Goku is dead. Even before she's the housewife, she's annoying.

But Chichi is housewife who wants to have a normal family and gets angry for legitimate reasons. Bulma is just there to be annoying. Agree to disagree, but I find Chichi to be much more tolerable.

She doesn't get angry for legit reasons. She blamed Goku for Gohan fighting the Saiyans. She's a housewife who wants what she read or thought is a normal family. At least Bulma contributes to the story, so no she's not just there to be annoying. There's no agree to disagree. I know we're all supposed to say that it's all a matter of opinion, but her being there just to be annoying is a flat out untrue statement. There was no story without her.

I mean Chichi is in denial and freaking out; she is in a perpetual nightmare. I think that I like her more then Bulma because she is more in the background where there's room for that.

Well... the others didn't disagree with her in that since he did get (in a way) Gohan involved with Vegeta. Wanting a husband that actually does shit for the family and not wanting your son to be the same as well as her son being dragged into battles with psychopaths to get his brains beat out is very legit reasons.

Not according to Krillin. Not even her dead ex Yamcha is safe from her sharp tongue (she fed bullshit about him being a playboy to Trunks).

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

No, not even in a way. He didn't get Gohan involved. Raditz came for his brother and kidnapped Gohan. Goku isn't responsible in the least. Goku brings home food for his family and saved their lives.

Did Kuririn specifically say Bulma was less abrasive than Chichi? Besides Yamcha having a fear of woman at the beginning of the series, was it ever proven what she said about him was BS?

She freaks out all the time and never listens to reason. She's in denial the entire series. For example, she marries Goku and thinks they are in love. Hell, she thinks she knows what love is.

I'm talking about the Vegeta fight more specifically and he also has no problem leaving his family behind to do his own thing. Goku saves everyone so it's not that special... especially since Goku himself said Gohan is a better man than him.

No but Krillin did note Bulma's abrasiveness to Trunks and there's also her tendency to talk shit to people who can (and would) very easily kill her.

Yamcha was dead set on settling down on and getting married plus she's far more actively shown to be disloyal so she's not one to judge.
Hell, she thinks she knows what love is.

She didn't know that and he didn't put Gohan in danger. Gohan put himself in danger and more than that, everyone was in danger because of the Saiyans. If Gohan hadn't done what he did, everyone would've been dead. Goku is innocent on that count. Yes, Goku does save everyone, but I don't know why you think that means he does nothing for his family. His son was kidnapped and he died to rescue him. Goku wasn't a great family man, but you can't take him giving his life for his child away from him. I don't think Chichi is a bad person, but she's not a great character and her shtick wore thin for years. Only towards the end does she show some interesting colors.

When was she abrasive towards Trunks or do you mean Kuririn said that TO Trunks? You don't like that she shit talks people that can kill her, but I find that funny and admirable. She's not going to take their crap just because they are physically stronger than her. And when was she shown to be disloyal? And because Yamcha wanted to marry her that means he couldn't be disloyal?
Does she? Do you know what love is either?
No, she doesn't. Yes, I do and at the very least I know it's not what I see on TV. It's certainly not what we saw between Chichi and Goku where she wants to marry him because he patted her crotch and still marries him because a made a promise under the mistaken belief that he was agreeing to food.
Retcons FTW!!
I wouldn't call that a retcon as much as a case of Toriyama telling and not showing.

She knew he was fighting Vegeta plus the TV and Uranai Baba's orb kept breaking down so much detail was left out. Saving them simply proves he's not a bad family man but generally he's more like another child... though the story never empathizes that (outside filler) since Goku can't do no wrong.

Yes the Earth may have been on the line but to suddenly find your child naked, bloodily-battered, and unconscious would be the worst thing for an adult to witness.

She was never specifically shown as abrasive to Trunks but Trunks did note of it and she was undeniably abrasive to Krillin. Never said I didn't like it but the fact she bugs superpowered psychopaths over dumb shit like how she bitched and slapped Beerus over ruining her "38th" birthday party even though she saw him thrash all her friends and husband/son then threaten to blow up Earth over pudding or when she almost made Freeza go ham on everyone cause she couldn't stop talking shit is plently abrasive. There's a difference to standing up to yourself and not knowing when to keep your mouth shut.... find it admirable all you want but that's just how it is. I also bet you see her constant self-absorbed pity-party on Namek is her pent-up frustration from being oppressed.

She planned to leave Yamcha for Jackie Chun till she found out he was an old man. Her reasoning for going on the RRA trip was so she can wish for the perfect boyfriend just cause Yamcha was popular with girls. Tried to seduce General Blue into being her boyfriend well before he tried anything with her.... but I bet you would use the teenager excuse.

It goes against Yamcha's life-long goals of wanting to getting married and his general personality suggests nothing of a playboy.
No, she doesn't. Yes, I do and at the very least I know it's not what I see on TV. It's certainly not what we saw between Chichi and Goku where she wants to marry him because he patted her crotch and still marries him because a made a promise under the mistaken belief that he was agreeing to food.
First, you claim she thinks she knows about love but now you're claiming she doesn't? Stop backpedaling and love is way more complicated than that. It wasn't so much she wanted to but felt obligated to since he kicked her "there".

We already talked about the mistake so I don't need to explain that to you.
I wouldn't call that a retcon as much as a case of Toriyama telling and not showing.
Having a character who was committed in meeting Miss. Right then suddenly isn't for the shake having Bulma fall into Vegeta's arms is definitely a retcon.
