I think this sums up my thoughts very well.Bullza wrote:Well in ways yeah. I definitely think it's the most entertaining anime ever. It's got mass appeal, the characters are all good, the story is interesting without being overly complex so it can be enjoyed by any age, a lot of action, a lot of comedy, colourful show, good music etc.
It doesn't have any vital downsides to it, it doesn't get bogged down by flashbacks, there are no sob stories, it's not too Japanese, there's no filler battles where you'll have the supporting characters fight like a dozen henchmen before Goku fights the main villain because they just jump straight to it.
So I can see why a lot of people would think it was the greatest.
MAL is not a bible. It's just another site and their review system is flawed.LightBing wrote: For what it's worth Dragon Ball Z is #344 on myanimelist.net
I don't know where he got that number? It's popping up as #207 for me.FortuneSSJ wrote:I think this sums up my thoughts very well.Bullza wrote:Well in ways yeah. Forget haters giving 1 to mainstream stuff, their system should not allow people to review something before x episodes aired.
A lot of people started trashing DB super, when the polemic episode 5 came out and gave it bad reputation, while they didn't even know we would get new stuff.
Those reviews don't say anything worh reading. It's just hate that doesn't help anyone.
How do you make a good review of show with 55+ episodes and no end on sight, after episode 5?! You don't.
And for what it's worth, if MAL was a thing when Dragon Ball debut it would rank much higher. Different times, different circumstances.
Those rankings aren't to be taken literally.
Disclaimer: I might get into a disagreement with you. Sometimes I might even get feisty about it. I'll never harbor negative feelings because of it though. I hope you feel the same way!Jinzoningen MULE wrote: Maybe I should start making it a point not to comment when I'm not sure of something. Too many people know what they're talking about around here.
That's why I said for what it's worth. Hellspawn28 describes it pretty well above. Still, it's a reasonable source for comparing pre-2000 animes. Since those animes don't suffer from the flow of love and hate that most anime instigate just by being released.FortuneSSJ wrote:MAL is not a bible. You mean you can't make an objective statement about a superlative entry in what is not only not a distinct genre, but simply a regional identifier within a broad medium?Akira wrote:That's like asking "What is the best movie ever?"

Both methods have their plus and minuses. For instance, if you just tell it in dialog, it can come off simply as boring exposition where it's just some dude talking.Nejishiki wrote:I'd argue Dragon Ball's lack of flashbacks works in its favor. It can kill the pacing when it's overdone. Personally, I prefer characters to recall their stories in the past tense instead of dedicating visual time towards those accounts. The weight of their stories should be able to stand on their own, yet I will admit it's been executed well before in a few of my favorite films. Those films utilized it in limited doses, however.
To answer the thread, I don't think I can make a judgment like that. Dragon Ball does well in what it tries to accomplish and it entertains me all the same. The same could be said for mostly any media I consume. It's just a matter of what you're looking for at any given moment.
