Japanese or English?

I agree, while Funimation didn't do so well on DBZ and Dragonball in general, many other anime are getting a very good treatment. I happen to know of a dub that is shown on television with very minimal editing, dialogue that pratically mirrors the original, and very good voice acting. And it happens to star a loud-mouthed, 12 year old Blonde kid.Yes, I mean Naruto. And before anyone goes on ranting about "believe it", he doesn't say that anymore, Viz wised up.

I dont know, I'm still not too crash hot on FUNimations dubs as a total. FMA was okay, except I cannot STAND vic Mcnogianginainginainginaog (that's another story entirely), Kodocha was fun and energetic (though I wont know since I wont be buying it anymore thanks FUNimation), but others seemed to take liberies way too far. Oh and Desert Punk which was rubbish to begin with but that's something for another forum

Of the ones I've seen, only one that took liberties was "Shin-Chan", but everyone I know said the liberties were needed there. Besides, I liked that show how they did it. Same with YYH which I prefer in English.

From my experience:
The English-translated manga is hilarious.
The Japanese anime is hilarious.
The more accurate English dub of the anime that has aired in the UK is hilarious.

So, while I haven't seen FUNimation's dub of Crayon Shin-chan, I strongly disagree with the idea that any liberties were needed.

well.. hmm.. Overall, I just hate dubs; can't stand them.

But, since I grew up with the dbz dub and such, I think I prefer the dub over the subs.
Also because Goku's voice in the subbed episodes annoyed me, it was too girlish eventhough he's supposed to be this super strong man. You know what I mean? ^^;

Though scriptwise, the sub's obviously better and makes more sense.

Funny. Heard that series would've bombed like Milk-chan had they kept it accurate due to cultural wonderings.

Shin-chan's really nothing like Milk-chan, humor-wise. I've seen a couple of episodes of the original version and there's nothing overly "Japanesey" or esoteric about the humor. FUNi just felt necessary to punch up the script to try to get the show on the Adult Swim block, I guess.

If you look a bit further the two aren't exactly alike nor really comparable entirely. But that doesn't matter much anyway, point is it has been done, but it was just FUNimation being FUNimation.

Just know my friends from Japan were surprised when they heard it was brought over to the US, and they thought it couldn't work here. Still they thought the dub was funny and they, as a lot of my friends were shocked by the shower-head line. None of them were expecting that.

I'm a dubbie myself. Been so since I saw the dub on Cartoon Network way back in 1999. I have seen a few of the movies in Japanese, 12 and 13, and I enjoyed them. I like the dub more than the Japanese verson because it's the version that I grew up with. I'm 17 now, and I'm proud to call Dragonball Z one of my favorite shows!

Crayon Shin-chan is really nothing like Super Milk-chan. Although there are obviously cultural references since it's about an "ordinary" Japanese family, the humour is definitely a lot more universal. It also doesn't have such bizarre characters and stories or the monotone voice thing going on.

But what do I know? I think Super Milk-chan's hilarious despite missing most of the cultural references. (Although I showed it to some friends once a couple of years ago and they still bring it up now as the worst anime they've ever seen ^^; )

Like 99.8% of everyone else here, I first saw the dub. It was pretty enjoyable. Like a few people here, I discovered the Japanese version by complete accident (Was watching DBGT on my PS2. Hit the wrong analog stick for subtitles..just in time to see Gogeta scream 'Big Bang Kamehameha' in perfect Engrish)

I more or less prefer both versions, although I haven't heard much of the Japanese version (Although I've played a lot of Budokai 3, which I know own, in Japanese to get a feel for how the characters sound)

Like most of us here the first version I saw was in English. I remember watching the Ocean dub of the Saiyan/Namek sagas on Cartoon Network on Saturday mornings semi-religiously, and whenever I would turn it on to find that they started over from the first episode, I would get pissed that they didn't go on with "new" episodes (It was before I knew how things worked, I find it pretty funny now

I liked Drummond's Vegeta and that was when I fell in love with the series and started going around the internets looking for whatever I could find about it. FUNi took over some time in there and I was excited to see the new episodes of the Namek saga. The first time I heard Freeza's dub voice I thought "what the fuck is this." and FUNi lost all credibility with me (since which Ocean has for their hack job on the Saiyan saga, but whatever). At about that time I was talking about the show to a friend who's parents were willing to buy him strange bootleg VHS tapes on eBay and he showed me a fansub, which I was just totally blown away by.

There was a time when I bought whatever fansubs I could get my hands on/afford, and it was great discovering how awesome the Japanese version is by seeing some of the movies and I even watched some GT before I knew what I was even getting into. I really enjoy music, and the Japanese music just does it for me.

Now after seeing a lot of the series in Japanese, watching the dub is honestly just offensive a lot of the time ("how could they get away with this..?"). I love the Japanese version because the combination of the appropriate bgm and the excellent voice acting actually conveys emotion to me as a viewer. It should be a huge insult to FUNi that I can watch a scene of their dub in my native language and not feel anything, but I can watch that same scene, raw, in a language I have no knowledge of, and feel the emotion that the seiyuu and bgm conveys, and even tear up. There are scenes that I really enjoy seeing in Japanese, like Gohan's SSJ2 transformation, that don't do anything for me when I watch the English version of them. It makes me upset that the people who have only seen the dub version of that scene (and many others) have been robbed of the real experience that the original creators intended.

I understand. There are some moments I feel more in English or Japanese. Like I prefer the SS2 transformation in Japanese, but Cell's destruction in English. I just love that moment and "Ginyu Transformation".

And that's totally cool. I reread what I wrote and I don't want it to seem like I'm hating on dub fans (not saying you're a "dub fan" either). The Japanese version is more effective for me, so I like it better. There may be scenes that I would like better in the dub, but after seeing some that I disliked a lot (I can think of Goku's first SSJ3 transformation, for another scene I like a lot more in the original) I quit watching the dub. If it's the dub that does it for you or anybody else, then that's where it's at, and I'm glad that we both enjoy the same show.

I say, to please everyone, they should have it like they do on Cartoon Network in Japan. They air each episode both in English and dubbed in Japanese. Why can't they here?

I first saw the show in English. My friend who lived next door to me went online and researched the show then told me about it. I wasn't very interested but at the time his cable provider didnt have Cartoon Network so he came to my house and I watched it with him. Needless to say I fell in love with it. My friend lost interest in the show while I became obsessed.

I loved the english version at first and didnt bother with the japanese but then I came upon Daizenshuu EX. Very soon after the first few episodes of the podcast, Mike and Julian convinced me to give the japanese version a chance. In time I found the original Japanese version to be way more informative and well...all around better.

I will probably never go back to watching the dub because the original version is much more dramatic and intense. Except!....The episode where Chibi Buu blows up the earth, I actually found the english version to be way more dramatic than the original. But thats it
