Translated Names?

The other day I was looking at a website about the Recent DBZ manga, over there in Japan. I look at the site throw a translated program.

On one of the pages where they were describing the chariters, I notetst something.
Some of the chariters has totally different names.
Like with Goku, he was called "Grandchild Sato sky." Gohan was called "Grandchild Sato rice," and krilen was called "Chestnut phosphorus." This was confusing unit I saw bulma's name. She was called "Bloomer" and I remember the her name meant that of woman's underwear.

I want to know...was it translating what there names truly meant?

Son Gohan. Grandchild Sato Rice? It's a little weird, but yes, Babelfish was translating the names.

I think Kuririn should be called "Baldy-Boy", Goku "Hard Head-Boy", Vegita "Big Forehead-Boy", Trunks "Purple Hair-Boy", Buruma....Uughhh! *B-kun starts throttling Jersey*

Vegeta should obviously be "receeding hairline boy".

I didn't think that Bulma was Japanese for bloomers, or anything like that. I thought it was just a word that sounded a bit like bloomers. Unlike Trunks or Bra, which are really just the English words.

Does the name Goku have a meaning? I know Gohan is rice... or lunch... or something, my memory is fading on that... but does Goku mean anything, or is it just a name? I always wondered if Gramps Gohan taking a look at the sky before saying his name meant something.

I just gave you the translation...

And the kuu [kong in Chinese] is emptiness, so when Gohan looked at the sky, the 'emptiness' [heh, in Chinese this is easier to explain ^^;], he named Gokuu after his own name, and the sky.

Ya know the movie Laputa of Miyazaki? The Japanese name starts with Tenkuu, which means sky.

And in DB they gave it the idea that Kuu [Kong in Chinese; emptiness] was a idea of Gohan by watching the sky.

Not terribly likely, seeing as how Donkey Kong predates Dragon Ball by about 6 years.

Although there are lots of urban rumours that "Donkey" was actually "monkey", and is was misheard down a phoneline, the most likely explanation is that Miyamto simply looked through an English thesauras looking for another word for "slow" or "stupid". And the Kong, rather obviously, comes from King Kong.

Actually, no. I forget the original name in Japan but when they went to bring it to the states they were told it was to bland. So, they searched through a thesuarus and Donkey Kong was born.
