In the Original Version, atleast the Manga, there was the line:
"I'm a Saiyan. Sent from earth to defeat you. The legendary warrior, with a pure heart awakened by rage. SON GOKU....THE SUPER SAIYAN!!!!"
The Dub however just has one of those classic Dub quotes....I forget it word for word, but it went something like this....
"I am the light in the darkness. I am the answer to all living beings that cry out for peace....ALLY TO GOOD!!! NIGHTMARE TO YOU FREEZA!!!"
See, this is one of those things that I just stare at in horror when people cite as a good line.

Hey you guys! Don't piss off the God of Love!" It's just... horrendous. Goku would never say anything like that in a million years. Shit, he doesn't even have the proper vocabulary to put those particular words together to form something that coherent, nevermind something so faux-profound.
I think the original Japanese line is grasping at straws a little bit, and that typical FUNimation re-write was example #573 that led us all to believe FUNimation's writers were a bunch of space cadets.

I think you just don't want to like it because you dislike Funimation. Sure, maybe it's not a line that Goku would really say. But regardless, it's an amazing hero line. But I guess you and a lot of others don't like it when FUNi adds in a typical "Hero line", eh? I personally though, am a sucker for those types of lines.

Not to gang up on you, but I pretty much agree with Mike that it sounds very uncharacteristic of Gokuu, and also pretty corny. If he were Stereotypical Eloquent Justice Fighter Man, it would be one thing, but Gokuu's just a dumb mountain hick.
It doesn't really have to do anything with hating FUNimation; the line just feels so out of place. None of the main characters are likely to say any of that "hero" type stuff, except maybe Great Saiyaman, who was a blatant parody of those speech-giving types anyway.

I like that one line Cell said to Trunks about how he went back into the future to save it from destruction, but in fact, he gauranteed it.

I have to agree with you on that. Sounded ok when I first saw it, but bad later. Mr. Schemmel's iteration of the I'm a Super Saiyan line in Budokai 1 was much better. And truer to the manga.

I definitely concur on this one as well. I'm not trying to gang up on you either, but I wanted to defend Mike a little against the inference you're making here.
Yes, Mike favours the original Japanese and definitely has a bias, but he is correct in his point about Goku's personality. *shrugs* It's just simply not in character for Goku. Simple as that. It's got nothing to do with whether one dislikes the dub or not. If this was Superman or He-Man or even Hercules, ya it would definitely be in character. Heck, to make this more anime-related, if this were Lina Inverse from Slayers or Sailor Moon, then most assuredly it would be accurate to the character.
I remember when I first saw that episode and I hadn't seen that much of the original Japanese at that point. I'd actually only seen some of the movies and certainly none of the Freeza saga yet, and when I saw that scene, even then I found myself simultaneously wincing and laughing at how bad that little speech was. >>

.....It's funny. It's very similar to what I said about 2 pages ago in this topic.

Yeah, but isn't that kind out of his character to say that? I don't really like the heroic speech Goku, which is very prevalent in the Buu arc & FUNi's Saiyan saga redub.

Oh don't get me wrong. I DO know that the heroic speech is out of character for the original Goku. But never the less, I still like it.

I like Vegeta's line he says before he transforms into an SSJ before Android 19 and Gero: "Does a Machine like yourself ever experience fear?"

Piccolo's and Supreme Kai's mind thoughts while starring at each other on the fighting platform, in the 25th Tourney; another scene that was done really well by FUNi.

1.) Nappa: I See, Parachutes
2.) Tien: You just wait til it grows back.
3.) Raditz: You just managed to singe some of my leghairs.
Of course I'd only like those if I was in a slap-happy mood, like the way I am now.

Yeah some of those old censoring with words quotes are classic. Like when Vegeta and Nappa crash on those building when they arrive and Vegeta says "It's a pity its Sunday or those buildings would of been full!"
Good old Funi, back when they deceived us by changing the audio rather than now when they deceive us by removing part of the image to make it widescreen...
All in all, brutalised as it was, I'm grateful to them for introducing me to Dragonball and the many fond memories.
