Dub moments which you PREFER to the original

Post by Rory » Fri Apr 13, 2007 2:18 pm

Now, this will probly' only get a few people respondigly positivly, but which moments in the dub (Now, this can be FUNimation or Ocean) do you actually prefer to the original Japanese version?
Personally, I find Goku's first transformation (To Super Saiya-Jin) to be much better in the dub, I think Faulconers music fits in beautifully with the moment, where-as the Japanese version was a bit of a let down (Except the cool monster Goku scream).
What about you guys?

Goku powering up to SSJ3 for the first time. The music used during this was very fitting and made the scene come across better than the JP version for me.

I also really liked the music played right after cell died (cell is dead). And when Goku has a vision of the saiyans that died, against Freeze. However I haven't really compared these to the original yet.

I liked the dub version more when Gohan went to to fight super Buu. I just preferd the way it came across.

(Sorry my answer's a little blunt, if I come up with anything better I'll post it).

Sometimes I prefer watching the Pioneer dub versions of the first three movies over the originals but that's justwhen I'm not in the mood to read subs or remember what was said.

The dub versions of:

A dialogue exchange in original DB's dub after Baba's 5 warriors are defeated, when it's prophesied how Goku will turn out by the end of GT - Baba: "The entire world will know his name one day" Roshi: "What do you know, Baba?" Baba: "I sense he'll be a great hero of his time" Bulma: "I thought he already was".

Piccolo's farewell dialogue to Gohan after he's fatally blasted by Nappa in the redub (w/t Japanese music thanks to season 1) where Piccolo confesses Gohan was like the son he never had, perfectly defining their Father-Son style relationship.

DBZ movies 2 (Pioneer dub!), 5, 6, 8, 10, and 11.

The Ocean dub edit of Kargo's death, saying he escaped with Freeza's dialogue "Patience, no-one escapes my wrath" after he pointlessly blows up a mountain makes it look like an implying that he killed the boy himself (like in the manga); all the while Bulma and Kuririn think he's alive with Moori's neck-broken Namekian corpse. :P

Goku's first ever SSJ transformation.

Goku's first onscreen transformation into SSJ3.

Gohan's flight to battle Super Buu and his subsequent battle.

There're other things.

Goku's SSJ3 transformation; Vegeta's Final Flash; pretty much every line Cell says... What else...

I didn't like the "wrath" redub. That just took out all the insane and maniacal energy that was in the old one.

Oh yeah, I liked the scene after Buu absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo when Gohan and Buu were facing off. Buu had some good lines there.

I prefered Goku's 1st Super Saiyan transformation scene more in the dub than the original, since it contained the awsome transformation theme tune which was one of my faverourite tracks by Bruce Faulconer <^ヮ^>

Everything with Perfect Cell and Buu, especially Buu. They sounded so much more evil and convincing to me.

Probably the Ginyu force scenes, the goofy voices and over exaggerated voice acting really came in handy. When Ginyu and co. were posing for Frieza when they first met was a perfectly executed scene in the Pioneer dub (They even kept in the moment of silence when Frieza stares bewildered at there poses instead of stuffing some dialogue in his mouth while his back was turned.)
Aro started to laugh. “Ha, ha, ha,” he chuckled.- Actual quote from Twilight

Piccolo: Is it over?
Vegeta: Not 'till the fish jumps...
::Fish Jumps::
It's over.

I always liked that scene a lot more than the original, where it's just silent. I felt the dub was right in adding in that extra line, just this once.

Here it is if anyone wants to actually see it. It's a small FLV file and VLC or Media Player Classic should play it just fine. It's kinda hard to hear Piccolo, turning up the volume should make it easier though.

I can't believe noone has mentioned Goku's speech to Vegeta in the Buu saga, just before they fuse. The dub changed Goku's rather generic 'we need to be stronger' spiel into a poignant 'our old race is dead, let's save our new one'.

I could've sworn you once said you preferred the arrival of Goku during the battle with the Saiyans in the Ocean dub, when he and Vegeta stare each other down for the first time, over the Japanese version (because of the Levy music I think). Or maybe it was someone else in chat, dunno. o.o

One line I always liked in the dub was when Super Boo was talking to Gohan.

Gohan: It's time to show you why my little brother looks up to me.
Super Boo: He doesn't, in fact he wonders why you let me take him.

or

Super Boo: So you wanna fight Majin Boo.
Gohan: Fight you? No I wanna Kill you.

or my personal favorite Funi joke

Super Boo's line is in reference to the fusion, after Goku looses the chance to fuse with Gohan because Boo absorbs him.

Super Boo:It seems you're having trouble bonding with your son.
Goku: Darn I should have used this when I had the chance.
Goku: I gotta think quick.
Super Boo: Think Goku both of your sons are a part of me, maybe we should seek family counseling! Ha Ha Ha!

I was rolling after that line.
"What do you get when you cross an owl with a bungee cord? My Ass... ah ha ha ha."-Master Pain (Betty)

"Remember children, if you are walking on your way home and you see a downed power line, eat a lot of hot dogs very quickly." - Takeru Kobayashi on snl.

Nah, that was me. I go back and forth on that one. Which do I prefer? The Japanese. Do I let a bit of sentimentality kick in every so often with regards to the FUNi/Ocean one? Yeah... sometimes. In conclusion? No conclusion. Carry on!

Oh I have to agree with you there, I also loved that line, the whole " We need to get stronger, so lets fuse! " was so cliché, I think they put a real nice twist on it.

I'm gonna drag this one up again because I find it incredibly hard to believe that out of 291 episodes, there's not ONE other scene where you definately prefer it, even if only slightly. I bet if you thought harder.... 8)
