Sure i completely agree it does not excuse bad writing. You can see this the most when people use it as a criticism of DB Super. Its like yeah DB was always aimed at kids even during its most serious arcs and there is nothing wrong with that.
When people ignore the flaws Super (or Ball, Z or GT) has with the excuse that it's a kids' show. You can see this pop up as a defence when someone criticises Super for having inconsistencies or bad storytelling. Being aimed at kids doesn't mean you should be able to get away with sub-par writing.
My point was mostly that i see this being thrown out from time to time almost to suggest that DB as a franchise has some kind of weird obligation to grow up with the audience witch is complete nonsense there is nothing wrong with DB being a kids show in the past and there is certainly nothing wrong with it being a kids show in the future.
