What is your favorite moment that you feel is underrated/not talked about?

Post by MarCas92 » Fri Dec 09, 2016 10:30 pm

Everyone knows and loves the iconic moments. Goku going SSJ for the 1st time, Gohan going SSJ2 for the first time, Majin Vegeta's sacrifice etc.

What are moments that you feel are underrated or just feel like you never see talked about? Why do you think that is?

Mine definitely has to be Piccolo giving Goku the ki he needs to teleport in GT. It's such a cool moment. It's really short but it always leaves and impact on me. It's the moment that highlights to me just what a difference Goku makes in the lives of his rivals. Not because he's the most powerful, but because of the effect he has on those around him. How fitting that one of Gokus earliest rivals and 2nd most important (only to Vegeta), the one whose only goal in life was to kill him and take over the world, is choosing to save that man and die along with the planet. So cool....

Off the top of my head, and limiting myself to technique scenes, Raditz' "Behind You" and SSJB Goku's Super God Shock Flash are both great scenes. The Raditz scene (and fight as a whole) was fast-paced, and the Goku scene was, in contrast, slow and dramatic. Both are underrated in my opinion.

Some of these aren't my favorites but I think they're underrated :

Saiyan arc :
Krillin nearly ripping Nappa in half.
Yajirobe cutting Vegeta's tail off.
The farmer with the Shotgun being brave enough to shot at Raditz.

Namek arc :
Krillin saving Dende with Gohan.
Piccolo holding his own against Freeza's 2nd form.
Krillin being able to rip Freeza's tail off.

Androids arc :
Tien holding Cell down.
Vegeta distracting Cell long enough to help Gohan win.
King Kai not losing his mind over Goku taking Cell to his planet.

Buu arc :
Chi Chi training Goten.
Vegeta "killing" Super Buu by pulling Fat Buu out of him.
#18 being able to fight both Ssj Goten and Trunks.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.

I really liked when Goku was informed that he was fighting against Gohan as the mysterious fifth man.

The end of the Jackie Chun vs Goku fight. That was awesome.

Also, Tao wiping the floor with Blue

Krillin vs Goku (not really that underrated)

Goku turning Oozaru for the very first time (I sure was confused/amazed when I saw that)

Goku's win vs Tambourine (biggest beatdown in the series?)

I'll name a few from my favorite arc in the series: Yajirobe running up to Vegeta and cutting through his armor, Tenshinhan's Kikoho against Nappa, the first appearance of the Kienzan, and the first appearance of the Makankosappo.

That one episode -- I think it was in the second DB tournament arc -- where the Man-Wolf wants to kill Jackie Chun because he blew up the moon, because the lack of moon has got the Man-Wolf stuck in wolf form(Because he's the opposite of a Wolf-Man), so Jackie Chun uses Krillin's head as a stand-in for the moon to make the guy a man again, permanently.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Yamcha conquering his fear of woman in order to save Bulma and their friends from Oozaru. People underestimate the will power he displayed there because it's a silly fear, but even if it's silly, it doesn't change the intensity of Yamcha's phobia. A few days prior he literally passed out at the mere sight of a girl. Imagine if a man with crippling arachnophobia dove into a pit of spiders in order to pull out his friends. That's what Yamcha did, and it's made all the better by what it means for Yamcha's character, how only a few days prior he was a selfish, loner bandit, but now these people mean so much to him.

I also like the subversion that Goku was ultimately the main antagonist of the first arc, and Yamcha was absolutely responsible for defeating him and saving everybody.

Goku's goodbye to Gohan in the Buu arc, right before the latter goes to Earth to fight Super Buu.

That's a funny way to spell "Puar".

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Yamcha was clearly the leader. Puar was his partner and an invaluable asset, but I would give Yamcha most of the credit. It was his idea, he took first action, he rescued everybody, he was holding Goku's tail. Puar merely came in and severed it after Yamcha told him to.

Yamcha saving Bulma and Puar in the JSAT special. It was cool to see the return of old characters in that special, why can't Super do that?

Kuririn being the first one to see his best friend, Goku, after his loss at the 22nd Tenkaichi Tournament. It's one of those moments that makes me well up and it feels like I'm the only one that ever brings this moment up.

Kuririn's loss at the 23rd Budokai. I'm a sucker for the underdog and I love the praise he receives from all the other characters. Goku acknowledging his strength, Roshi acknowledging him as a true martial artist and even Piccolo realizing taking over the world won't be as easy as he thought all show why Kuririn is such a great character. Even though he lost,it might be Kurirns finest moment in my opinion.

Kuririn managing to hold his own against Nappa and even Vegeta praising him for his speed. I feel like it showcases just how good of a fighter Kuririn is, but, then again, that entire fight really did elevate him above everyone else.

-Roshi's dialog when Goku and Krillin start to fight about how there is no sitting on your laurels when it comes to training
-Kami's little dialog about his ineffectiveness as God at the end of the 23rd World Tournament
-Goku's kick to Buu's ribs on the Kaioshin world in the anime, the one with the shockwaves

When Trunks turns super saiyan in The History of Trunks. You can just feel him finally snap just before his hair turns yellow, and he's truly filled with despair because Gohan was such a good friend and mentor to Trunks and there's absolutely no way to bring him back, he's just dead. It's my personal favorite Super Saiyan transformation. I love SSJ2 Gohan's as well, but it was just over 16, whom he didn't really have any past with, and the alternate way he turned SSJ2 in the following episode wasn't quite as impactful to me.

Now that I think of it, wouldn't it have been cool if future Trunks became a friend and mentor to present Gohan (as a sort of "thank you" to future Gohan) in the Android arc and trained with him in the RoSaT instead of Vegeta, and Cell ended up killing Trunks instead of 16? Then it could've been Trunks' death that pushed Gohan over the edge, just like how it was Gohan's death in the future that pushed Trunks over the edge. Kinda could've brought things full circle. But, uh, I'm going off topic

This one of those hidden details of Dragon Ball. At the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, Goku starts bowing down to this opponents before the fights, something he didn't do before. The reason, Gohan calling him out for not doing it in their match the previous arc. I love it!

Chiaotzu sacrifice against Nappa. He literally sacrificed his life for everyone, since there were no Namekians balls at the time. It was incredible courageous and the highly of the character. It's so sad people turned it into a joke. Specially those Chiaotzu backpacks.

Vegeta admitting that he's never hugged or embraced Kid Trunks in the Majin Boo arc before he killed himself. It's such a sombre and down-to-earth moment for Vegeta and symbolised the turning in his entire character. Vegeta's is finally putting things into perspective and is taking into consideration the feeling of other people with more gravitas. The moment is even more sad considering how antagonising and distant he was towards Future Trunks and only at the very end of the Cell arc did he show anything other than contempt for him, even it was very briefly and somewhat vague.

Roshi and Tenshinhan's confrontation after their fight in the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai. I love how conflicted Tenshinhan is because he doesn't understand Roshi's motives and goals. It's a really good scene.

A second option would be Goku's training with Karin. One of the best training sequences in the series, but it is never brought up.

A third option would be anything that isn't DBZ. Well, someone had to say it.

I also like the part in the Buu arc where Goku responds to Goten and Trunks not being there for Vegeta and Gohan when they fought Buu, when he says "I am weak, but you can do it!". Don't know exactly why I like it but I think it shows an admirable part of Goku's character, what part that is I can't exactly say though lol. In fact, Goku's whole dialog to Piccolo on Kami's about how there needs to be a new generation I thought was great.
