Jeez this scene has caused so much controversy in such short amount of time. How much you wanna bet that when the dub comes out they will change the context so people stop complaining. then we will get people complaining that they changed the scene even if they hated it originally for about 20 plus years. This might almost be like a self fulfilling prophecy.

Sorry. I didn't mean to leave you hanging this long, but what with Thanksgiving and then general business, I haven't had much time to post at all. I've literally had this tab open for the past week and a half to remind myself to come back to this when I got a chance. But at any rate, I just wanted to say that it's fine and, again, I'm sorry if it came off as harsh. I appreciate you reading that, understanding why I was frustrated, and taking the time to try to resolve things. That was very kind of you.Fionordequester wrote:I tried, I really did!

Re: "Goku never kissed": Do you take it as a joke or (un)funny trivia?
So is Super Goku written more like Goku was back in the first few arcs of Dragon Ball???
I mean, Goku was taught some basic education by Roshi, and seems fairly well adapted to general life once he's older. It's not like he's doing pat-pats anymore. I believe Kami and Popo taught Goku other life lessons. Sure, when he's 18 he is surprised about lipstick but he doesn't do that sort of stuff in Z.
It's like Saiyan arc Goku is the most mature version of Goku. He really cares about his friends and realizes letting Vegeta go is selfish and dangerous; he does it as of request not demand. It's not like he's telling Krillin not to kill Vegeta without understanding why that would be a bad idea. He knows full well but can't help it.
Seems like Super Goku would demand to let Vegeta live and give a reason in a dumbed down manner like"I dunno, fighting him was FUN!"
Mind you, I haven't watched Super, but BoG Goku does some out of character moments: he waits until Beerus is gonna do some really bad shit, and that is when he steps in despite being there the whole time. Z Goku would rush to protect the people he cares about (See: Goku vs Saiyans; Goku travelling to Namek; Goku arriving to confront Freeza). Although, there is already some regression with his mindset when facing the Cyborgs and Cell. Even against Fat Buu he could've beat him but thought letting others have a chance would be a better idea (Yet, Goku does regret this decision later, which shows signs of maturity).

I think everyone is discounting a very real possibility here. Think about how many blows to the head Goku has taken? Perhaps this mental regression is actually a sign of early onset dementia
I for one am eagerly awaiting a report about this on "Outside the Lines".

I loved hearing that Goku never kissed Chi-Chi. In fact, I just generally love how DBS is probably the first piece of DB lore not entirely written by Akira Toriyama that actually dares to give Goku that whole vibe of almost otherworldly weirdness that Toriyama did so well. There are of course many different aspects to Toriyama's uncanny character of Goku; and the whole "oblivious to romance and romantic love" is just one of them. But the fact that DBS dares to showcase that aspect at least, in my book, puts it much higher than something like GT or the older movies that just made Goku an utterly bland ideal heroic male type and disregarded all his oddities.
And with that said, I do wish that BDS would at some point also be daring enough to show another aspect of Toriyama's Goku that it seems that no other writer have the guts to touch upon; namely his occasional disregard for the good of others, and even downright disregard for right and wrong, when his own lust for battle is involved. This along with Goku's shortcomings as a father are the two boldest aspects of his character. Very few writers would ever attempt to have a main character that is often times genuinly portrayed as utterly pure, friendly and compassionate, and yet at the same time is a terribly neglectful father AND semi-regularly is willing to disregard his friends and the world at large as long as he gets his kicks in battle.

Toriyama is most likely the one behind the kiss scene though, since it's in the manga too.Puaru wrote:I loved hearing that Goku never kissed Chi-Chi. Hey let's not exaggerate, there are married people who don't kiss but they don't rape each other. There are different cultures around the world and some of them don't practice the kiss in the mouth custom, but if they're not isolated they could still know of the custom and just don't practice it (globalism and such).DBZAOTA482 wrote:Then Goku had to been raped for sex.Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:Could you explain it?DBZAOTA482 wrote: Not just that... the implication is that he doesn't even know what a kiss is.

What's weird about this poorly thought joke is that Chichi who read magazines about romance in her youth didn't try to kiss Goku ever, not even in their western marriage cerimony (Toriyama drew Chichi wearing a western style bride dress). Considering the kiss wasn't part of Chichi's culture in Mount Frypan, the Son family have a television in their house, and along all the years they live together they never saw a peck on the lips in the TV? It's weird.
The Son family despite living in the mountains they aren't isolated from society. In public outings they could see PDA too. So I really can't believe Goku doesn't Know what a Kiss is, he's not a kid isolated in Mount Paozu.
And besides there's still a different way to take this kiss scene. There isn't a consensus between translators about the topic.

I've seen this come up a few times in this thread, so I think it's important to remind people that that's only in a chapter title page. Lots and lots of wacky things happen in title pages: Goku's a formula one racecar driver, Goku and Blooma ride around in a hot air balloon, Goku and the gang watch their own anime adaptation. Title pages are obviously just whatever Toriyama feels like drawing to introduce the chapter that week and should not necessarily be taken to mean they are actually representing events in the series. In the chapter where Goku agrees to marry Chichi, Toriyama opens it with a title page of Goku and Chichi in wedding attire driving off. It makes thematic sense to use such a title page. And the anime definitely took those design cues when crafting their own wedding for the couple. But there's nothing in the manga to suggest what their wedding was like at all.mabalia wrote:(Toriyama drew Chichi wearing a western style bride dress)

Ok, I concede this part, but if we see the clothes Videl and Gohan wore in their marriage (both manga and anime version) they wore a western attire and this information let us to understand they had a western kind of marriage, so Goku could see his son kissing the bride in the ceremony.
And all of this kissing jokes just works if we interpret that kissing isn't part of Chichi's culture and that Goku don't watch television and hardly leaves Mount Paozu (he just go out to fight and train). And all this work to understand a joke don't make it a funny one.
I'm not bothered that the joke implys that Goku doesn't kiss his wife what bothers me is that he doesn't know what a kiss is. It's just that's a type of comment I expect from kid Goku not from grandfather Goku who could see a bit of the love life of his friends and son.

What the hell are you talking about? You make an amazing amount of mistakes for such a short sentence.DBZAOTA482 wrote:Neo-Makaiōshin wrote:DBZAOTA482 wrote: So basically... you like Super ruining things for others just to make Goku an unlikable and badly-written character?
"you like Super ruining things for others"
When the hell did I ever said anything regarding whether or not I like Super ruining other's enjoyment or ruining anything else? I never took into account at all how people feel about the version of Goku that I enjoy. If people don't like the version we have now then to bad, but I don't give a fuck. You make it sound like the reason why I like this version is because it apparently somehow "ruins" something for someone else. And if that's not what you mean then don't say it. You make the same kind of mistake when you say:
"just to make Goku an unlikable and badly written character"
Here you make i sound like I somehow expressed that I enjoy seeing Goku being badly written. I don't. I enjoy Goku and certain aspects of him, and if others percieve the things that I enjoy about him to make him come of as badly written, then to bad, but that's neither something I like nor dislike. I don't care.
Obviously, I realize fully well that you never actually believed about me what you said there, you were just trying to discredit my point of view with the old "summarize the things the person said but accentuate the negative to make it sound bad". But I just want to point out to you that you did it completely wrong because you didn't summarize what I said, instead you wrote something completely different that had very little to do with anything I said or any opinions that I stated. You should have said something like:
"So basically you're fine with Goku being a retarded asshole".
THAT would have made sense.
