I'd say the Dark Tournament is the high point of Yu Yu Hakusho, so if you don't think it's good already, you're not gonna enjoy the following two arcs. Sensui is an overrated villain and the arc's climax is even worse than Future Trunks spirit bombing Zamasu. The last arc is absolutely awful. I definitely agree that the detective-esque first 20 chapters of YYH are its best points, it had subtly brilliant writing (my favorite chapter in the entire series is the one with the old man and the tanooki). Togashi has interesting ideas but the fact that he's terribly lazy lets him down, Hunter x Hunter is the same way; Level E is his best work-ekrolo2 wrote:I haven't read a lot of it but you are right about things being brought back prompting some reevaluation, look how many SW prequel videos/articles being made now that TFA and Rogue One have spurned peoples' interests.Doctor. wrote:I don't think it's very good, either. But yeah, the old man/tanooki chapter was the best of the best from what I've seen of Yu Yu.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Re: What's the best anime u watched and how it compares to DBZ?
That's very debatable. If there one thing One Piece has always excelled in it how it treats the supporting cast. Every character introduced in One Piece has some kind of importance to the plot. Even characters that appear for a few panels. I can't say the same for Naruto. Once the time-skip happened, literally half of the original cast was ditched and the new supporting cast that was introduced, Akatsuki (Minus Nagato and Konan), Danzo, Sai, Killer Bee etc, just didn't have much in the character department. It was only until the final major arc that they entered back into the limelight, but even then their presence was over-shadowed by either Naruto or Sasuke. Of course, I'm strictly speaking about the manga, as I do recognise that there some filler episodes that focus on the supporting cast, but they ultimately really don't do much for their characters themselves. I will give Naruto credit for what they've done for the forgotten supporting cast with the Naruto Hiden light novel series, but it's far too late for me to get invested into.sintzu wrote:Naruto's secondary characters get more focus than One Piece's and Naruto's villains feel a lot more important and impactful than One Piece's.

Dang, THAT bad? I've always heard good or "ok" things about the series. I watched a few of the beginning episodes and they were pretty good. If it's like that in later arcs, then it went straight south.Doctor. wrote: Well, maybe I'm overreacting, maybe not. Re: What's the best anime u watched and how it compares to DBZ?
Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex are definitely the best I've seen. Both are better than any Dragon Ball anime, I score DB and Z both an 8/10, while those first 2 anime I score a 10/10. Dragon Ball manga I give a 9/10 though, never read the GitS manga.
Also, as Yu Yu Hakusho is my 2nd favorite anime and manga, I would say that Chapter Black is the best arc in the anime, but I don't necessarily think it is better than the Dark Tournament in the manga. Yusuke's asspull powerup is not really a big problem to me since it helps to develop his character in the next arc.

This is true but it's also a case of quality vs quantity, In One Piece all the characters get to do something but nothing like what Luffy gets while in Naruto not everyone gets to do something but the characters who do get Naruto's kind of treatment where they get to defeat main villains and for awhile the story was told completely through Sasuke's point of view where he got to go after multiple main villains and form his team.Lord Beerus wrote:

I like how they both handle characters but if I had to pick one then a few main characters is better than one with multiple supporting ones.
Light novels for characters like Tien would be great and I'd take those over the slice of life episodes any day.
One Piece's world building on the other hand won't be touched by anyone anytime soon and I can't wait to see what else Oda has for us.

I completely disagree with both statements. Dragon Ball and Yu Yu Hakusho are my favorite anime and manga ever, and I think both are well-written, but I have to say that Dragon Ball is a better manga, even if only by a little bit. As anime, I'd probably say YYH is slightly better though, so maybe I'm not in total disagreement as the OP was asking for anime only.sintzu wrote:DB done perfectly would be its fights with Naruto's characters and One Piece's world.Saikyo no Senshi wrote:Yuu Yuu Hakusho is Dragon Ball Z done right.
One Piece's world is great but a lot more outrageous than Dragon Ball's, Dragon Ball's tone of world is a lot more less bizarre, like you wouldn't see a place like Whole Cake Island or something extremely fantastical; cities like West City are more prevalent, where they're a lot more "normal" in comparison. Naruto's characters can go to hell lol. Too edgy and over-dramatic for me, some nonsensical motivations and contrived moments as well, like when Sasuke resolves to destroy the Leaf after fighting Itachi. A series like Yu Yu Hakusho or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure would be more in line with what Dragon Ball (at least the original manga) is like, due not only to that city/location thing, but various other things like having similar characters and powers.

Re: What's the best anime u watched and how it compares to DBZ?
FMA:Brotherhood will always be #1. Great animation and the final battle lasts like 17 episodes. The other FMA gets way too wild at the end.
HxH was really good, like others have said it changes drastically every season. I do have a huge complaint that this series does everything possible to avoid showing a fight scene (yes there are a few good ones) but most of the good from this show comes from outside of fighting. The most hype dodgeball match I've ever seen definitely.
One Punch Man is definitely worth watching. One season, great animation and fights. Some people don't like the concept but Saitama's personality and the world they created around him made it a great series to me.
Death Note was interesting, a psychological thriller. I loved it up until about halfway through and then it kind of takes a nosedive. L was a great character.
Attack on Titan really weirded me out at first. I tried to watch the first episode three separate times before I finally decided to get into it, and it got a lot better as it went. Eren is probably the worst lead character I've seen though, he literally has no idea what's going on the entire series. I'd like a count on how many times he asks himself a rhetorical question like "what is going on!?" Other than him the other characters are great and the story is good. Mikasa should've been the main character, and the military officials in this show are usually brilliant and don't make you hate them with moronic decisions like every other show. Super-gory, but it's a weird sense of excitement when a pretty well known character just gets obliterated by giant knee or stomped on.
I've also always liked the Avatar series on Nick in the US. The original started out kind of bland but if you stick to it the last two season in particular were great. I really like the combat in these series, incorporating martial arts stances and stuff makes it look cool. The Korra series had a little more serious tone and I liked it a lot too.
Now if I had to rate all the ones I've listed;
FMA:BH - 11/10
Avatar - 9/10
DBZ - 8.5/10
Attack on Titan 8.5/10
Avatar Korra - 8/10
HxH - 8/10
One Punch Man - 7.5/10
Death Note - 7/10
Super doesn't get its own rating because it's an extension of DBZ to me, its rating would be inflated.

Re: What's the best anime u watched and how it compares to DBZ?
I don't know about anyone else, but I consider Yuu Yuu Hakusho, the anime I think that's what the OP's question was in the first place, a better product than Dragon Ball. An anime is not only about writing. But, still I'll address it.
Yuu Yuu Hakusho is a simple, standard battle shounen story like Dragon Ball. The 4 major players Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara are fairly balanced well and share an interesting dynamic which I don't see with any Dragon Ball character. Toguro, voiced by Genda Tesshou and Sensui, voiced by Naya Rokurou are two effective and interesting villains with motivations and as far as I am concerned they beat the shit out of all Dragon Ball villains with ease.
As for battle powers and asspulls, yes Yuu Yuu Hakusho has asspulls but I don't give two fucks about it. I think 9 out of 10 battle shounen suffer from it and it needs to be overlooked if you want to enjoy it. At least, I do. Power ups out-of-nowhere is kind of impossible to avoid, especially since the author is writing/drawing on a weekly basis. So, it's perfectly understandable and not something to get mad about.
Moving on to the most important part, which is more important than writing and that is storytelling. There's absolutely no contest here. Yuu Yuu Hakusho wins. The anime even managed to save the awful final story arc. If not entirely, at least a little bit through fleshed out battles and carefully placed dialogue scenes. The Dark Tournament and Chapter Black story arcs were already interesting script wise and the anime staff made it even more interesting through great animation and precise direction.
Shinbo Akiyuki(director and storyboard artist)and Wakabayashi Atsushi(animation director, key animator) combo episodes is better than any Dragon Ball episode. Some of the fantastic work they did were episodes #30, #35, #41, #45, #47, #52, #58, #66, #74, #82. You can't not notice the animation and direction in it and how they impact the story through the sheer creativity and skill they possess. Then, there's Nishio Tetsuya, another great animator who was given some of the crucial moments to handle and he executed it beautifully.
Yuu Yuu Hakusho is as simple as Dragon Ball, but it's well-balanced main cast of characters, brilliant acting(Japanese cast), strong animation and direction for the most part makes it a better anime than Dragon Ball.

I have watched dang near every anime [Yu Yu, Saint Seiya, fist of north star, case closed, rourouni kenshin, Gundam wing, Gundam, Death note, Yugioh, pokemon, Ghost in the shell, Guyver, Jo jo, etc] You name it..... They are good but as far as consistent entertainment....Dragon ball still wins. Style, direction and an all star cast that keeps you excited; Dragonball still the best for me.
Re: What's the best anime u watched and how it compares to DBZ?
I think when you compare them as manga, Dragon Ball is better written, but I can definitely see why one (and I may even agree) would think it is better written when compared as anime. I for the most part agree with the directing and storyboarding points, I remember Yusuke vs Doctor being exceptional in that regard. Yomi vs Shura as well.Saikyo no Senshi wrote:I don't know about anyone else, but I consider Yuu Yuu Hakusho, the anime I think that's what the OP's question was in the first place, a better product than Dragon Ball. Everyone in the series did something, even fodder like Yamcha and Chaozu. YYH also commits some of the same sins that DBZ does, like writing Kuwabara out of the final arc or Genkai becoming useless like Roshi did. Comparing a cast of 4 people to like 10+ isn't very fair. Freeza or Cell or Buu aren't as layered as Toguro or Sensui or Meruem, but that doesn't make them worse, all 3 of their goals are all classic DB villain goals: Toguro wants the ultimate fight just like Cell, Sensui seeks to kill all humanity a la Zamasu and nearly every other DB villain, and Meruem wants to be King and subjugate humanity a la King Piccolo. Chrollo is definitely not as good as any of the aforementioned villains, though I expect that to change because Togashi is awesome. Of course as we find out about Toguro, he just wants to be proven wrong, that his choice to lose humanity was wrong. And with Sensui, he wants to be reborn as a demon, but the point still stands that for most of the screentime they have, they're very similar to DB villains.Shuby wrote:Lol the nostalgia goggles are hot here, rating dbz higher thenHXH? That may be the case, but I think those airy, open spaces are indicative of the kind of landscapes we see in Dragon Ball, in a sense it defines it: Penguin Village's fields, the rocks and mountains where Goku and Vegeta fight, the Namekian landscape...I'd like to think its all intentional.sintzu wrote:This is true but you also have a lot of bland plain places like Namek that's the same background from start to nearly finish while in One Piece everything is always changing and there's a lot going on in each location.
You don't have to like them but you have to admit that giving another character the full spotlight like Sasuke is a good idea.
See, I never understood this because I think after Freeza, everyone gets spotlight with the exception of maybe Puar and Chaozu: Yamcha is always talking when taking care of Goku or driving the plane carrying him or when he's at Kame House, Krillin has the detonator, Piccolo, Trunks, Vegeta & Gohan are all fighting and main focuses of the arc against the main villain, Tien has his Cell moment...it's one of the things I've always never got, but I can see why people feel differently now with Super.

Can you say that about Vegeta and Zoro who are their shows 2nd main characters ?
The other characters like Jiraya and Asuma got fights that felt very important and impactful to the plot, not fights with nameless henchmen like what Luffy's crew get.
Goku dying after the fight with Cell was the perfect time to give each character an adventure, we could've had Gohan be earth's main protector, Piccolo could've had something to do on Namek & Vegeta's could've exloared the universe trying to figure out what to do now that Goku's gone.
I just started thrillar bark on One Piece so I don't fully know how things develop later but I'd like to see Luffy taken out and Zoro taking over the crew in his place.
Unlike Toriyama and Oda, Kishimoto isn't afraid to fully give the spotlight to other characters which is surprising cause of how long One Piece and DB are so you'd think they'd change things up every once and awhile.

But why is it not the same though? Vegeta literally takes out every villain in the Namek arc minus Freeza. The character arc isn't as lengthy I guess, but in terms of delivering important plot points, I feel its definitely the same, especially because Vegeta isn't on the heroes' side yet and is just doing his own thing. Even with the others like Gotenks or Gohan, its the same to me as what you said with Jiraiya and Asuma.sintzu wrote:But it's not the same as Sasuke leaving the village after defeating Naruto, taking out Orochimaru, forming his own team, fighting Dedara and Itachi, hunting down the Killer Bee, attacking the Kage summit, fighting the raikage and finally killing Danzu before fighting Kakashi and Naruto.SaiyanZ wrote:Yamcha is always talking when taking care of Goku or driving the plane carrying him or when he's at Kame House, Krillin has the detonator, Piccolo, Trunks, Vegeta & Gohan are all fighting and main focuses of the arc against the main villain, Tien has his Cell moment...it's one of the things I've always never got, but I can see why people feel differently now with Super.
Unlike Toriyama and Oda, Kishimoto isn't afraid to fully give the spotlight to another characters which is surprising cause of how long they are so you'd think they'd change things up every once and awhile.
Tim Duncan is dope and forever.

They were all henchmen while the villains Sasuke took out were all main ones.SaiyanZ wrote:

Sasuke also wasn't on the heroes' side but that didn't stop Kishimoto from giving him his own adventure.
Asuma's fight lead to Shikamaru developing and taking out a main villain.
Gohan's fight with Cell was supposed to lead to him being the main character but it didn't because Toriyama didn't want to let go of Goku.
Gotenks' fight didn't lead to anything at all.
July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
