Would you watch a new English dub?

Sadly, the English 5.1 dub track w/ the Japanese score (for the Season boxsets) is probably the most accurate dub of DBZ we'll ever get here in the US. It's decent & plenty watchable for me, but still no where near the level of quality found in most other English dubs today, or even FUNimation dubs.

Outside of the Ocean dubs of movies 1-3, which were damn near perfect (excusing the inclusion of the dub terms/names) ... I miss those days.

That could just be a function of the primary audience that DB/Z/GT was marketed to in the first place IMO. I guess it's sort of in between high-caliber dubs like Bebop & FMA, and low-caliber dubs like the 4Kids One Piece. The acting could be better, admittedly, even though I *like* the voices, but at least it isn't a ridiculous English dub like 4Kids One Piece.

Here's something to chew on: Was Viz Communications owned by Shueisha before they merged with ShoPro Entertainment to become Viz Media? If so, then they could have passed on Ranma 1/2 and gotten DB/Z/GT instead. Who knows what would have happened in a world where Viz produced the DB/Z/GT series.

I would love a new dub with a better script, but it seems kind of redundant. The season boxsets would've been the ideal excuse for this to happen [with the "revised" audio and whatnot], but unfortunately that ship has sailed and FUNimation has let us down yet again.

FUNimation seems to keep missing the boat when dealing with the Dragon Ball series. Not to further branch out this topic, but do you think that FUNimation will continue tweaking the releases of the series to try and appeal to the viewers (and perhaps continue to fail)? It seems that the single disc 3-4 episode releases are the best things for American fans so far.

At least ADV will have compete, consistent releases. That's a shit ton more than FUNi will put out. I would like these season box sets to continue just to see if they're capable of completing DBZ.

I kind of tend to agree with Mike, that no "re-dubbing" of the DB series will tickle my fancy. But... it would be interesting. Above all, I'd like to hear actors who can act "human" (or Saiya-jin, Namekian, etc.), rather than simply play a "type". One of the reasons why I don't watch DB/Z with the English track is because I can't stand listening to macho, tough guys talking in unecessarily loud voices.

I find myself looking at the ol' Ocean Dub with a nostalgic kind of longing. Give me Ted Cole, Cathy Weseluck, and Scott McNeil!

If Viz did DBZ, it would literally have the same actors (ocean cast). Although it wouldn't be released on a wide level like most syndicated shows and they would have taken forever dubbing it (like ranma).

Only seen the first season of Ranma, but will say due to my reading much of the manga before seeing it, I pictured quite a few voices differenly. (Pictured Ryoga with Ted Cole's voice).

Will also say, it's likely due to hearing them so long, I prefer Monika Antonelli's high squeeky Puar to Cathy Weseluk's Luna-esque Puar. Same for Mike McFarland's Master Roshi. It's his second funniest voice IMO.

Also like they said in the podcast, sometimes if you redub something, you lose the charm of what you liked while you were younger.

Ted Cole does Kunou's voice doesn't he? From what little I remember of the Ranma dub, I liked Ted Cole. ^^

Awww, I also really like Cathy Weseluck's Puar. (Oh God, you're right! I never made the Luna connection before! o_o) To me, she is dub Puar and Chaozu. ...I'll withhold my comments about Monika Antonelli's performances...

I'm going to do a complete 180 and say that I'd probably follow a re-dubbing of DB/Z like a blood hound on the scent... I agree with you that something like a re-dub might cause the charm to be lost. But it could also make that old school charm all the more... charming; if you follow me? Ummm. That is: the FUNi "re-dub" made me appreciate the Ocean Dub more, so maybe another go at the series will make us appreciate what FUNi's done to the anime! ^_~

...Mmmmh, I'm probably coming off as a big Ocean Dub fan right now.

In about ten years, without any alterations to the film that makes it look like ass, the right script, and the right actors, and I'd buy the whole series over again.

Hell, release a redub THIS YEAR with Ron Perlman as Piccolo, and I'd buy it!
