Goku has a complicated relationship with the gods. Namely, he likes the challenge they give him, but he doesn't like how the gods treats mortals like they're toys.
That, it turns out, wasn't the conflict Toriyama was interested in resolving. Or, insomuch as it is resolved now, it's because Goku has become the inconvenience and threat to Beerus and Champa rather than the other way around. Not because of his strength, but because of his temperament. Zeno's just the tool.
Still feels like some nice sleight of hand.
