Discussion specifically regarding the "refreshed" TV version of DBZ created in Japan for its 20th anniversary, including individual threads for each episode.
mint0h wrote:So I have realized that the 'Mondo Cool!' and 'His Power is Over 9000!' pieces from AS' preview didn't make the cut. What I didn't know is that it's a literal copy of the Remastered Z Dub. Interesting, so they must have had to cut it out. I assume TFS and Mr. Sabat will have to explain on Twitter later.
On the actual episode, I can personally confirm that Linda Young is still doing Baba's voice, since I thought she left after Kai. Redneck Idasa will never not be a fav of mine either, and Budokai Announcer is still doing well aside from a few voice cracks.
I have to say, the accurate translation and better acting makes things a bit more funnier. Piccolo getting concern over his 'green skin' and being told to not break the arena again while being treated so casually, as well as many of the side characters this episode.
I just asked Sabat through Twitter. We'll see what his response, or TFS' will be if they choose to make one. I wondered why it seemed poorly translated, since some things didn't make sense. I haven't seen the original Buu saga dub in years, so I forgot what it sounded like.
Poorly translated? It's supposed to be a mock / purposely bad acting
It's the Yamamoto incident all over again. New material is recorded, Toei finds said material questionable in legality, New material is replaced with the old stuff.

Jack is just kinda dumb.
Spoiler:
It's believable someone would name a mouse Jack.
It's not at all believable someone would call a mouse Mouse.
Takes you straight out of the experience.
Neither line is good, but Funi's is so much worse [when compared to Blue Water's].
Almost certainly legal issues. It's not a huge deal, the joke coheres just fine with the old dialogue, but it is quite a slap in the face towards the TFS fans.

What I mean is, FUNi nowadays are pretty good at translating funny scenes in the anime they dub. I get the purpose of the scene, but I feel that, like the TFS audio most likely did, they could've given it a great gag dub treatment. The TFS audio was most likely really hilarious. The audio that replaced it most likely was hilarious for longtime fans, as is TFS' brand of humor. I'm very disappointed because I don't hold the original Z dub in high regard, as it's mostly really bad minus a few lines here & there. If Toei's be hind it, then I'm disappointed in them for not going with the jokes.
The epic tale of how Sean Schemmel blocked me on Twitter:
I tagged him in a thread explaining how his performance wasn't rerecorded when FUNi were redoing parts of the early Z dub for the Orange Bricks.
He thought I was misrepresenting his work by saying he wasn't in something he was in.
I explained how that wasn't the situation & did a bit of a sarcastic kinda thing involving the rerecordings FUNi did for the Z dub to show how stupid that was.
He said they didn't record him & not use his recordings.
Blocked & he deleted his response tweets to me.
???
Profit...?
If it doesn't wind up on the DVD, TFS will undoubtedly do something with it in the future
Assuming they kept the audio, though I imagine, minus Masako, they recorded right at FUNimation in Texas, so only they'd have access to the clips. Though they COULD always rerecord the lines, assuming they remember what the script was.

They probably wrote the script for that scene themselves, so I don't imagine that would be an issue

Man, this sucks. I really don't like TFS at all, but even I was looking forward to them showing up. I can't image how disappointed actual fans of them are right now. Fingers crossed that whatever stopped them from appearing in the episode gets resolved before the home video releases!
Disappointment in the reenactment aside, I just had a look at the credits of this episode and #18 is listed as just "Artificial Human." Is that the first time any of the androids have been referred to as such in the dub, credits included?

Yeah usually it's either "Android" or just their number
As for the reenactment, Kaiser and MasakoX have denied any involvement at all
Lani, the only voice we did hear in the scene, I'm assuming will be away from social media for the next week so we're more likely to get some kind of hard word elsewhere before then
I'm still holding out hope for the DVD; it wouldn't be the first time Kai had a home-release-exclusive gag, but even then that stuff's usually as slight as a couple of wilhelm screams
I hate how secretive this stuff gets at the professional levels; it's always the not knowing that kills me
It's a shame that the TFS never got their moment. I'm sure that there was legality involving Toei regarding the Cell Games reenactment scene that lead to FUNimation having to pull the plug on the whole thing. Hopefully we'll see it on the DVD/Blu-Ray release.

But the fact that there are still people reading the series after all this time… All I can say is; “thank you.” Really, that’s all.

And that you also have IMMENSELY skewed and comically backwards priorities in what you think is most important and needed to make a good Dragon Ball story.

I'm hoping best case; Toei just made them edit it for tv (or funimation did it to make it a dvd selling point)
And medium case; the DVD/blurays were already mastered with that version of the scene before Toei made them change it, and seeing as how the home release, to my knowledge, has not been delayed like Part Five was during the whole Yamamoto debacle, Funi hasn't bothered to change that
All of this is just kinda wishful thinking at this point but I really don't want to believe we've just had the opportunity of a lifetime for this show teased and then ripped away and replaced with the exact same thing we got fifteen years ago
It's not a breaking point for me entirely but I'm definitely in no rush to preorder that part one dvd until I know whether or not I'm going to have a gaping hole of what could've been where that scene is

Kaiser has all but confirmed the involvement of TFS in DBZKAI. It makes me really feel for TFS who will no doubt get swarmed with questions, but NDA and contracts will allow them to not divulge any info. Sabat is all we've got who can comment.

The best way to fix the giant cancer that is the DB Wiki is to provide an alternative for those who really want it. Even those who prefer dub names will wind up looking things up on the Kanzenshuu Wiki. Because sooner or later, they're going to need information they know they can trust.
