I've always seen it as a pun on 'brute' since it makes them into giant brutes.

<Xyex> Original Freeza never sounded like a chick to me.
<Kaboom> Neither does Rita
<Xyex> Good point.

Lessee... There's the more likely pun of Brute, or the more interesting one of Butt... I go with the latter.
There's further proof of it being a pun on Butt! The Brutz waves were used to make Vegeta go SSJ4. When Goku achieved SSJ4, there was a nude collage of him, clearing showing his tanned bottom. There's your connection! Brutz Waves=SSJ4. SSJ4=barenaked butt.
It's really very easy to figure out, you know.

But then, of course, someone, somewhere, would be sitting here going "Lunar... Luna... Lun... Luhn... Lun...ch... LUNCH! AHA, another food pun! That crazy Tori!Agreed. ^^Ben Plante wrote:
Toriyama shoulda just called them Lunar Waves and been done with it. But, that's out Tori for ya.

Also... what the hell is a 'Xeno'? Yeah, 17 million Brutz waves, but... why is it called a Xeno? Isn't the definition of Xeno something along the lines of differing cultures or some such?

That's the way I always took it. Hence my choice of "Bruits Waves."TripleRach wrote:I just recently noticed the resemblance between "buruutsu" and "furuutsu". Only a dakuten of difference! Maybe that was Toriyama's intended pun, since there were no Tsufuru-jin in the manga.
There's a "Bruits Fasket" joke somewhere in there that I'm not going to make. Especially since Ritsu Sohma isn't much of a character, despite being the Monkey.

YES! YES! DAIMAO SAYS, THUS IT IS SO! IT'S A PUN ON FRUIT, NOT BRUTE!
Okay, he's not 100% canon... but close enough.
Thanks Steve. You rock the house, homey G yo snap. Or whatever.
And hey, I have since changed to saying Puerh. I was the one who mailed VegeEX, who then mailed you, saying I insisted it was Puer. I was unaware of the unfortunate definition of Puer. YOU WIN!

Hey, Steve... have ANY of these avatars of yours been your real face?
Shitou, double-posted again, shoulda just editted. I'll try harder to remember.

In the old Wade-Giles system, it's "P'u-erh;" in Pinyin (the official romanization used by the Chinese government), it's "Pu'er"... so really, both of your spellings are wrong. (But then again, that's just like us lazy English-speakers to neglect hyphens, apostrophes, and other diacritical marks...)

Oh, I get it. Well, I just like Puerh now.
God damn it's hot tonight.

It never occured to me that Zeno could be interpreted as Xeno, but looking up the definition of Xeno, I don't see much relevance. But I'll also leave it for someone else.

It might be Zeno, I kinda just assumed he said Xeno.

Vegeta would've said Zeno because he doesn't like Xeno. See, he's scared of Xeno. He's a Xenophobe! He doesn't like non-Saiyans!
...
Laugh, damn you! That's a double-pun, you didn't think of it!

Any idea why FUNi AND Viz both go with "Pu'ar"? I know that FUNi gets the names wrong somtimes, but it's strange that Viz would use the same version. Unless they decided to keep it similar for convenience (like they seem to have with "Yamcha").SaiyaJedi wrote:In the old Wade-Giles system, it's "P'u-erh;" in Pinyin (the official romanization used by the Chinese government), it's "Pu'er"... so really, both of your spellings are wrong. BTW, I was playing Budokai today, and they're called "Brutes waves" there. Of course, their translations are all over the place.

"Yamcha" is Cantonese, though, so it's a legitimate spelling.PsyLiam wrote:Any idea why FUNi AND Viz both go with "Pu'ar"? As for the "Puar" thing, it's probably to get the pronunciation of the "er" syllable across better... it doesn't sound like the English "ah" (in Britain and Australia) or "urr" (in Canada and the US) that we usually associate with it; rather, it sounds more like a pirate "arr." So that's probably why they changed the spelling, even though it ruins the pun a tad.

While none of them is actually me, each one of them is Steve Simmons. (Not including that horrible mugshot that I'm not using any longer).Ben Plante wrote:Hey, Steve... have ANY of these avatars of yours been your real face?
True, true. Then again, you're just asking for it trying to romanize anything out of Chinese, with it's multiple dialects. Not to mention that Pinyin has only been around since 1958, while Wade-Giles goes back to 1859, so it also matters when the word entered the English lexicon. Pinyin has been the standard internationally for over twenty years though.Saiyajedi wrote:In the old Wade-Giles system, it's "P'u-erh;" in Pinyin (the official romanization used by the Chinese government), it's "Pu'er"... so really, both of your spellings are wrong. As for the Zeno/Xeno/Geno thing, you've got me. I thought it might be named for the Greek philosopher that discovered that moonlight is reflected sunlight, but that was Anaxagoras, not Zeno (though they were contemporaries).
I won't because they don't. The French dub is quite possibly the only dub worse than Funi's. Why bother to make a comparison if KNOW that you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about?
