Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
We know Dragon Ball has a huge influence on a lot of people. It's pretty much the Japanese Star Wars in terms of popularity and significance.... but has it ever compelled you enough to write your own story?
It certainly did for me though it's far from the only influence:

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

I haven't written anything but it's the only story that got me thinking about it.

Dragon Ball has inspired me to do a lot of things. I have written some stories, and also YouTube videos. I'm pretty sure everyone on this board was inspired by Dragon Ball in some way, whether they even realize it or not.
Re: Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
Dragon Ball fanfiction? Yeah, sure, I think it has inspired most fans to do the same, regardless of whether or not they went through with it.
An original story inspired on Dragon Ball? Eh, not really. Most of my ideas are inspired on other works, there may be a few themes I may take from Dragon Ball subconsciously, but that's just because the series has had a big effect on my life.

We going into fanfiction territory with this?
Then no..
I am fine with what the original story holds and how it progresses, feel no need to develop what if scenarios required to write a fanfiction..

It's definitely inspired fanfiction out of me before, and continues to do so, even if a lot of it is on the backburner as of now. As far as inspiring original stories though? Well...it certainly inspired a few out of me way back in my youth, but none of them are truly what I'd call...'original'...looking back on them. They weren't carbon-copy rip-offs, but...well, yeah. The less said about those the better.
I do have one original novel idea though (that is also on the backburner, until I figure out exactly what it is I want to do with it) that's very much inspired by Dragon Ball's overall fighting styles, though the story idea very much owes a lot to US comic books too.

I wrote the outline and then detailed out two arcs of a post-GT fan series that I thought about. But that was when I was like 13. Other than that, I do like to write, but I am not really in that genre.

I've written an incomplete fanfic inspired by Dragon Ball and it's given me loads of ideas for D20 games.

Re: Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
I do have my own ideas, written and drawn, that have been influenced by Dragon Ball. Nearly all of them will never leave my head, though.
However, if I ever decide to create my own intellectual property and it becomes popular, I will not use most of same styles, ideas and motivations that Toriyama did in creating his own stories.
I like his simplicity in character design and plot points, but I will not use laziness as a motivation for it.
I like his sci-fi ideas of space travel, extraterrestrials and time travel, but I will not write about them with little explanation and major plot-holes.

DRAGON BALL IS THE KING OF (Fighting) ANIME!!!!!!! In my opinion, at least...
My reaction to anything about Dragon Ball post-2013 that I don't like and/or is stupid.

Re: Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
Dragon Ball has inspired me tremendously in pursuing a life of creativity. Most of that is in the realm of art (right now I'm teaching myself to color with dyes like Toriyama did and it's proving to be quite difficult) but in storytelling as well. When I read those earliest volumes of DB I'm very inspired to write a walkabout story - an adventure story that's an adventure for the writer as well as the characters, like Dragon Ball was.

I've been writing ideas for characters, and concepts for stories to write one day.

Re: Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
Directly? No, I don't write fan fiction or consciously integrate elements from DB into my stories. However, when going over them, I do tend to notice very "familiar" patterns regarding thought processes, personalities, timing of events, and even relationships. These things I can usually trace back to something I've watched (although strangely enough, not read) in recent history.
Every good storyteller is a plagiarist, I believe. Although I'm certainly not the best, I'd be dishonest if I told anyone that I'm very original, no matter how hard I try to be.

Re: Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
I created some items for Dragon Ball:
- Majin mirror - Majin Boo looks at the mirror, sees Pure Evil Boo reflected, and transforms into Evil Boo with smoke all around. Then he stops with Pure Boo's reflection.
- Ghost band - It goes around the waist to turn one half of the body invisible and untouchable, while the other can be coordinated as if they were one, kinda like Hirudegarn.

Well, I want to write a pastiche of Dragon Ball with an English friend of mine that instead of using Chinese and Japanese myths and folklore as its basis, we use Slavic and Viking myths and folklore.
While my Goku pastiche will be partially based off the literary character Kordian because, believe it or not, he actually rode on a cloud at one point in his story.

Do whatever you like, ghost.

Re: Has Dragon Ball influenced you to write your own story?
I'm currently thinking up a story that's inspired by Dragon Ball, with elements of World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings. Basically, if I pitched it to someone, I'd describe my story as "What if J.R.R Tolkien wrote an episode of DBZ?" or "What if Akira Toriyama wrote The Hobbit?" or something like that.
So far, I haven't written anything yet, but I've been doodling some sketches (which aren't online at the moment) and thought up a basic summary.
The story's called "Wonderworld" (well, it's a working title at least) and the main character's name is based on Son Goku. The MC, named Karl Stormbarrel, is a simple farm boy who wants to become the world's strongest hero. He's got a good heart, loves helping others and enjoys fighting bad guys, especially if they're really strong. Karl's also incredibly strong. When he was 5, his father prepared his son for a quest to see a powerful master who will make Karl their apprentice. When the boy finally turned 10, he began his long (well, not too long) journey to find this master person and fulfill his dream. Along the way, he meets a wandering teenage wizard-in-training, Putz (he's 15) and a female Dwarf bandit, Suzana (she's 12) and the three of them face many perilous obstacles and pretty nasty people along the way. Plenty of action and hijinks will ensue
Well, that's the summary I'm going with right now. I hope to write this out soon.
