Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

How far would you go to meet Akira Toriyama?

Post by OutRun2 » Thu Jul 19, 2007 5:15 am

Let's say Akira Toriyama came to the US and attended an anime convention for the first time ever. Chances are, it would be his ONLY trip to a US con.

So what would you do? If the con he was attending was not in your state, would you fly to another state(or for those of you in another country, fly to another country) to attend the con, even if it meant going by yourself, just to meet him?

And when you got there, at what lengths would you go, to actually get an autograph? Let's say the con staff held a raffle to get an autograph from this historic icon. You pulled your raffle and discovered that, as unfortunate as it is, you did NOT pull a winning number. BUT....another guy, who did pull a winning raffle ticket, saw how distraut you were and offered to sell you his winning ticket.....for $2000!!!! Would you pay him for it? $2000 is a lot of money for you, and would probably break your bank, but it meant an autograph from AKIRA FRIGGIN TORIYAMA!!!!!!! Something you know you'll never have the chance to get ever again! Would you do it or just pass?

OK, let's say you were at the con and had planned on taking at least a few snap shots of your idol. The camera you own takes the most beautiful, vivid pictures you've ever seen in your life. It is especially good photographing people. Unfortunately, your expensive camera drops and breaks. There is a Circuit City like 20 miles away from where the con is being held, that sells the same camera and is priced at around, say $1500. You COULD buy the camera but it would put an enormous burden on your financial situation and cause you to sacrifice paying for things that urgently need paying for. BUT....it meant you got a spankin new camera and could maybe...just maybe, get your picture taken with the legend himself in a rich, vivid and lifelike photograph. Would you go to CC and buy the camera?

How irrational would you go about the whole thing? :)

First off, it wouldn't be his first trip to the States for a convention.

Now, personally, I wouldn't get so crazy to meet Toriyama. Yes, he's the author of the manga we all love dearly, but he's also a humble normal guy from Japan who loves Disney and wacky humor. In other words, he's a normal guy just like you and me, except he happens to be a household name for DragonBall fans. Maybe if he came over for another convention in New York or New Jersey or something, I'd pack my credit cards and head off on an hours-long car drive to shake hands and get an autograph. But that's it, I wouldn't pursue the guy obsessively.

This makes me feel like a lazy fan or something. TT_TT

New Jersey has its own Con and I've never been there. ^^;
I doubt I'd go all out to see Mr. Toriyama.
From what I know he seems kind of shy when it comes to fans anyways.

If it were someplace decently close by like Quakerbridge or Oxford Valley Mall, then I'd pay him a visit. Maybe ask one or two questions.
On hiatus.

If i ever had the opportunity, i wouldn't hesitate,, yet i wouldn't go all wacko either - i'de walk up, offer a hand shake and/or bow to him and say "konichiwa, Toriyama sama. i am very honored to have such an opportunity".

Then ask him for an autograph, and perhaps a Saiya-jin question or two. naturally i would be VERY excited, yet try to keep a low-keyed demeanor.
Just Saiyan...

I doubt I'll ever meet Toriyama. If I did though, I'd probably be very polite, bow and say "konichiwa," and maybe do a quick sketch of Goku and ask him to autograph it.

Or I would dance and bounce around like a sugar-high 4-year-old, screaming "OH MY GOD IT'S AKIRA TORIYAMA! ZOMGZOMGZOMGZOMG WILL U SIGN MY BUTT?!"

I would do almost nothing mentioned in the first post. Goodness gracious man!

If the whole thing cost me more than $200 to do, I probably wouldn't do it. It would be great if it happened, but life doesn't stop for a manga-ka.

The alternatives you mentioned in the first post wouldn't be something a fan would do... only something an over-obsessed psycho-freak would do. :? I like Akira Toriyama, but I'd never go as far as to idolise him and see him as some sort of god...

I didn't even bother to read the first post, I'll answer the question in the topic: downtown. Or maybe I would go as far as Lisbon (wich is the capital of my country and I live about 25 minutes of distance of it). That's as far as I would go.

I wouldn't be that bothered about meeting him to be honest, sure he's created one of my favourite pass times, and hobbies, but I'm not going to go all crazy for him. He's just a regular guy who can't be fussed with the hassle, and seems to shy a little from the fandom. That kind of makes me like him more though, because it shows that he did DragonBall more for the fun of doing it, then the perks that came with it.

Dragon_Soufin, what's the deal with all the dots? oO

If I had the chance to meet him, I probably would.

In 1998 or so, I would have given my left nut.

Today, I'd just be grateful to be within 500 feet of him.

Japanese fans, who are a million times more obsessed in fandom than we are, would do even crazier things. Now you see why he lives a reclusive life.

Well, we know why he never got his life threatened by them (cough Anno! cough), he always bowed to their whim to keep putting Goku back in the spotlight. :P

Well, he was at the SJ Premiere in NY. Back then, I was still a new DB fan, & I knew very little about him. What I mean is, if he were to appear at a con (very little chance) somewhere in the states, I probably would go if I had the time & money.

Most likely, I'd show him one of my good illustrations of Son Goku and ask him to autograph it and that would be amazing. :D

Other than that, I don't think I'd say or do anything else.
