Well, some guy took 15 seconds of footage and made a rhythmic montage to it for no reason, uploaded it on Youtube, and here you go. Just find the video with the most views - that's the original one. I don't think he intended to be funny or start this huge thing, by any means.

It's also one of those things that either hits you as utterly hilarious or strikes you as completely stupid and always does. Luckily, I'm in the former. It's just one of those things that has turned into a big joke with me and all of my friends, too. Most of them are only casual Dragonball fans. But, last month when 5 of us were at Cedar Point, we would recite the clip just as we reached the top of the big first rise. I would yell Nappa's line, then as we shot down, all 5 would be screaming "It's over 9000!!!". I thought it was grand.

The Kajtastic musical (The Pylons are trapped Balls) utilizes clips from 9000 in various parts. Though there Nappa's lines turn out more memorable; somehow I think the fact that the phrase "over nine thousaaaand!" only lasted one *ahem* verse implies the maker ... suspected something. ^^.

4chan is the pit of the internet. It's really harmless (though Fox News would have you believe otherwise) but it's not for the faint of heart - or stomach.

Completely offtopic, but this talk of Hell of the Internet makes me think of a cheap "Look at the pretty colors and buttons!" "village" I made... umm... some time in the past 600 days, where basically all you could do was talk/attack the residents, or look at clickable objects.
Attacking the Toothfairy sends you to the cyber abyss. AKA Myspace.
Is it merciful luck, or shear fabrication that 4chan was not the outcome? *doesn't remember if knew about it at that time*

Sorta on topic... Sabat has been forced by surge-thirsty fans to immitate the line (along with "The balls are inert"), right? Any clue as to what he thinks of... umm... anything related to it?

I know someone here asked him about it (in regards to the first season set saying "over 900") and he knew about it, though I'm unclear of his feelings towards it.

To give you an idea of how ridiculous this thing has become, here's two examples from Otakon.

At the Mad-Gear (video game retailer) booth in the dealer's room, they had a little sign that said something along the lines of "How awesome is this booth?! IT'S OVER 9000!" I'm totally getting the wording wrong, but yeah.

At the FUNimation One Piece panel, at some certain point in time (possibly during talk about Chris Sabat?), someone out in the audience yelled "IT'S OVER 9000!"... to which I began to yell back, "THAT WASN'T HIM", but in-process, someone louder than me screamed back, "THAT WAS BRIAN DRUMMOND".

If anything, it further proves that anime conventions are becoming less and less about celebrating our shared love of Japanese culture (including its animation), but are instead becoming a celebration of internet culture using anime as a faux-backdrop just to initiate the gathering.

It's rare to have fans of anime--especially non-dubbies--that aren't linked heavily to the internet or some other stereotypical geek-culture element. Turns out that most of the swordclub regulars at ma place (Second semester conflicted with Japanese class... irony stings sometimes...) were also most of the Anime club, and the DND ... umm... people, and one of them in Java I elaborated on a webserver assignment with quite a few extra elements (seems that some of those were elements that a webbrowser would use over a server, but I certainly can't be critical).
And of course, there was an instance in Japanese when someone asked how many points a project would be worth. Teaching fella answers something like, "Fifty. What'd you expect?". "I don't know, over nine thousand?". At which point more than one of the like, 7 people in the room seized on the opening. ('course, I would have, given another millisecond...

).

Note also that these second semester japanese students were also pronouncing it "nuh-roo-to", "meinga", but tended to get anime right. And near the end of the second semester still didn't understand the difference between swearing in English and Japanese, as noted by a conversation comparable to the "ZOMG dragonballz has mroe swaring in the japanes version FUNI SUCKS!" variety.

Which in turn makes me feel like I'm being a big-headed bastard for taking note of all of these things as though they don't apply to me (well... I think it's clear here which do and which don't.).
Oh, wait, but while I'm on a rant that references Naruto.
Everyone in my household pronounces it right. Absolutely none of them have seen anything but the dub, and the extent of their more-than-TV-and-VHS/DVD anime-ing is DBZ Movie13 Japanese track, one or two googlings of Naruto, the Z Store, and a couple looks at the anime section in various video stores. And a copy of Pojo's guide to Dragon Ball. And... I'm not going into games.

I didn't realize until this post the irony not only in that relatively clueless dubbies (two of which are under nine) pronounce "Naruto" correctly, but that no one in Japanese II, who were most definitely self-proclaimed Otaku, pronounced it correctly to my recollection.
