Is Gohan modeled after Tetsuo (from "Akira")?

In this video he looks to me to be mimicking the akira movie with the cape. I wonder if that is what they modelled child gohan after.

Particularly the part where he takes on the giant laser beam from that guys staff(A few moments into where that link starts.). It screams, "Akira!" even more than normal dragon ball stuff.

The way the technology is draw and how moves along with the background is very similar to things in Akira.

One a side note, at the end of that movie, where the guys gets his body, goku should have said, "I think we've used the dragon balls one too many times." Indicating they may have messed shenron up in the process.

I thought you meant Akira Toriyama at first. Then I realized you meant the Akira sci-fi film.

Both cases, no. I think Gohan got the cape from his mentor Piccolo.

Akira was an incredibly influential film in the animation world so it's very likely they were influenced by it to some degree, at least in terms of scenes like this. I don't think they modeled Gohan after any characters from it though.

I got the feeling this movie and specifically this set of scenes were an homage to akira the movie. Especially when the robot comes out.

Yea, I meant testuo. And with how gohan looks in that cap and how the animation is done It seems deliberately made to look like a very specific moment in akira. The way they do motion in the staff laser scene seems to be done in a way to mimic it in a really interesting way. I'm assuming it's the same animation method or something similar. Didn't, "Akira," the guy who did DB help work on, "Akira," the movie? If not didn't he do stuff with the creator of akira at some point? I thought he did before the movie Akira came out for some reason.

Maybe it's just giving me flashbacks! >< If only my VHS player still worked.

You'll notice the ball is very similar to the pods we start seeing when vegeta shows up in DBZ. I wonder if it's related. the DBZ warrior and even normal dragon ball are very similar or reminiscent to me in regards to the powers of Tetsuos. I'm pretty sure all of dragon ball, even from the beginning, and Akira are very similar somehow.

Dragon ball the original is older.. I wonder if akira took from DB or the other way around. Or if it's a nuetral source they both use. I'm assuming DBZ is inspired by it an the powers and themes involved.

Just looked it up. Dragon ball is 1984, but DBZ is 1988. Pretty sure think the whole vegeta/raditz thing may be doing this on purpose. Like he is the dna of the canisters arriving.. Or is there something they were both inspired by?

I think the original dragon ball is monkey king and DBZ and the sayians are based on the things/theme in Akira heavily. Or whatever common source there might be. Anyone know what that is if there is one?

He mentions they are part of a gang named the capsules. Capsule core. Did Akira then took from dragon ball or there is a neutral source! DB Is older than akira the movie. Or is there an older manga? Edit: NVM, Akira manga is 1982-xxx. And dragon ball manga is 1984-xxx.. So, it's probably DB taking from akira.

Although I did notice he called them espers. That must be where Final fantasy got it. Never noticed that before. I miss those old games. FF1 and FF6 were awesome.
