Kamekameha
Kamekameha
I was watching the Tenkaichi Budokai arc when Goten is up against Trunks in the final round of the junior division. And during their bout Goten shows Trunks that he also is able to use Ki by firing a (un-controlled kamehameha). However, Goten says "Kame(ka)meha" and right afterwards Trunks points out the mistake. My point is it really necessary to even call the name of the attack in order to use it, as Goten gets it wrong but is still able to fire the kamehameha.
Is it necessary to announce the attack name as you're using it?
Technically, no. In the rules of Shonen anime, yes.

I sort of think of the "Kamekameha" as Goten's own version of the Kamehameha. Like how there are turning kamehameha, red 10x kamehameha, gold kamehameha, bunches of other ones, too.
So I class the "Kamekameha" as just a weaker Kamehameha, specific to Goten, and I play around with the idea that taking out 'hame' makes the beam seem less fearful sounding.

I always thought announcing the attack just helped them with the timing of powering it up. As you see when Muten Roshi uses the Kamahamaha for the first time, he said part of the name with each movement he did.

That's a good point, NeptuneKai.
I would think that when you're in a fight for your life and other people's lives, the more enthusiasm you can put into what you're doing, the more energy you will have, therefore fight better. I'll bet when Goku and crew are firing up their attacks, it pumps them up to say the name. But yes, we have seen many instances when attacks were done without saying the name. Sometimes a simple yell replaces it, which probably has the same effect.
For me personally, it makes an attack a lot more entertaining when the name is said. It also clears up confusion on whether or not the attack is supposed to be significant enough to have a name. For example: Freeza's "Death Beam" never has a name, but we see that it is clearly a move of his when Cell uses it in the Cell Games. Or Future Trunks' "Burning Attack". It's video game named, but he uses it again (non canon) in The History of Trunks and The Three Super Saiyan. So I would call it a specific move, but I'm sure many don't. So yeah, it helps for attacks to have names said by the characters.
Also, maybe Goten would have been able to control the blast had he said the name right.

Well, while you're free to think that, it isn't really. Goten simply mispronounces it, it's not distinguishable from a normal Kamehame-Ha such as a 10x version or a fully powered Super Saiyan 2 "golden" version may be. What's good to remember is Goten was in the middle of a battle and had thousands of people watching, there had to be some stress on him. While not canon, he does get it right by the time of DBZ movie 11, as well as being able to pronounce it properly as an adult in GT.Supa Saiya-Jin Tullece wrote:I sort of think of the "Kamekameha" as Goten's own version of the Kamehameha. It seems so much funnier in my head than I can communicate, so I won't even bother trying to write it down... @_@
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

What episode was this? It's a shame, though, that we didn't see more of Goten and Trunks actually fighting as Goten and Trunks besides the tournament. I think it was cool to see the kids fight.Adamant wrote:You might also want to check out the Goku/Jackie Chun battle in the 21st Budoukai, where Goku tricks Jackie by yelling the name of a different attack than the one he's actually using.

And let's not forget that Son Goten's older brother repeated the same slur in the late Saiya-jin arc, calling "Kamehame-ha", but thinking "Masenkou". Obviously, the specific name doesn't actually have much to do with the attack itself. Though I will go ahead and agree that saying *something* no doubt makes the attack more potent, as outlined above. ^^

Though not 100% on-topic, I'd just like to express my sorrow in pointing out that "Kamekame-Ka" is not maintained in the dub dialogue. It's somewhat defining to Goten's character, and FUNi dropped the ball.

That'll explain why I didn't even know about it until reading Daizex discussions about the Sparking series. V.V. And somehow that reminds me that I have japanese homework to be doing. *runs away*

Wasn't the Masenko-Kamehameha thing one of those wacky filler errors? In which case it wouldn't really be Gohan's, just Toei's.Dragon Ball Daisuki wrote:And let's not forget that Son Goten's older brother repeated the same slur in the late Saiya-jin arc, calling "Kamehame-ha", but thinking "Masenkou".
