Does DBZ have the most over-hyped anime English dub of all time?
Re: Does DBZ have the most over-hyped anime English dub of all time?
Never thought of the dub as over hyped or even thought about it that way!!
To most people the dub was there first exposure to dbz and anime so you can't blame people for having nostalgia from it.
I was never a fan of the japanese dub for DB and many other animes in fact but i do respect it and i respect people who prefers anime in its original language! i dont however appreciate when people get into this elitist mindset about having to watch anime in japanese dub with sub.
So to me i won't consider it over hyped but just at the right level of hype for people to view DB in anyway they wish to.

Agreed, Sabat's vegeta maybe be good now but still it doesn't have that Horikawa's Regal charm and also Sabat's Piccolo doesn't have that sinister tone of Furukawa's Piccolo but Latino dub had.8000 Saiyan wrote:She sounds Russian.DragonBallKing wrote:I've also watched a bit of the Japanese, and while the voice work is good It's a bit difficult to take scenes like this seriously: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F5p1_hR2Ws8000 Saiyan wrote: The Black Lagoon dub is amazing. I've been watching My Hero Academia lately. I've seen it mostly in Japanese, but I've also seen some episodes in English, and I have to say that Sabat's All Might is better than his Piccolo and Vegeta. I think there are people who could play those two better than him.DragonBallKing wrote:My Hero Academia has a very underappreciated dub, I think Sabat is better as All Might than he is for Piccolo or Vegeta.
I prefer Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, DB/Z/GT Movies, Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball GT in Japanese.
For DBZ Kai and two new Movies I like both Dub and Sub. I Prefer Shunsuke Kikuchi Soundtracks over All other Composers.

I'm far from an elitist or a sub purist, I enjoy watching dubs ever now and then. All i'm saying is that DBZ for some reason is put on this imaginary pedestal of "one of few dubs worth watching". I believe the OG Funi dub is objectively bad, however I will never say you are wrong for enjoying it.Shinsa wrote:Never thought of the dub as over hyped or even thought about it that way!!

Anyways....
Hmm i dont know about putting the dub on a pedestal as it does have some major problems but from my experience and from fellow dub fans some people dont particularly like Masako Nozawa's voice as Goku or many of the other characters voices.
Also DBZ being an important show of introducing anime with us as kids and not being able to watch the show anyway else also affects this.
I will say i do enjoy Ryo Harikawa's as Vegeta. I had the pleasure of meeting him and he was just a super nice guy and is pretty much perfect as Vegeta.

From my experience Nozawa's voice as well as the Kikuchi score is the reason fans are willing to overlook the dubs problems.Shinsa wrote:DragonBallKing wrote:I'm far from an elitist or a sub purist, I enjoy watching dubs ever now and then. Nozawa's voice is really an acquired taste, I didn't watch Super for the longest time because I disliked her Goku voice. Watching OG Dragon Ball in Japanese really helped me ease into her adult Goku.

I'm going by what I've seen. I remember when One Piece and Naruto became more well known around 2002-2003 in the US anime & manga fandom and people started to do fan sub downloads on AOL chat rooms, IRC channels, file hosting services and BitTorrent. Not to mention you had people trying to track down the Japanese versions of Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh after hearing how bad they where edited on American TV. Yet somehow they didn't do that for Dragon Ball.dario03 wrote:You say that like its a absolute. I'm sure It depends on the person, but it's more common then you would think. I was subscribed to this guy on youtube who put out pretty good anime top 10's , all of the clips he used where in the original Japanese even YYH and FMA but for DBZ he used the old Funi dub. Then you have those people who dub over the good stuff in Super with old funi dialogue, It's like their trying so hard to believe the Funi dub is the original and the Japanese version is the secondary version nobody cares about.Hellspawn28 wrote:I'm going by what I've seen. Re: Does DBZ have the most overhyped anime english dub of all time?
Same as I said before, some did, some didn't. Plus you need to take technology and accessibility into account. Funimation finished airing DBZ by April 2003 so you could just watch it in English by then. Naruto on the other hand was just starting in Japan by then and didn't air in English until 2005, about 8 months after GT finished in English. So if you wanted to watch Naruto in 2003 you had to watch it subbed. But with that said people did download DBZ subbed or since a lot had slow internet back then and larger video file sizes they got vhs/cd/dvd fansubs. The sub vs dub debate has been going on forever.Hellspawn28 wrote:I'm going by what I've seen. Re: Does DBZ have the most overhyped anime english dub of all time?
Exactly, I noticed the same thing on almost all Top 10 Anime Videos which Include DBZ and for all animes they use Subs but DBZ is always an exception and I have also noticed everytime on any Z Dub YouTube Video with Kikuchi score that many noobs complain about "Kia music sucks here" so, according to them Bruce Faulconer Music is Original DBZ Music and Old FUNi Dub is original and even if the Z Dub clip is with Kikuchi score which is infact original, they refer to it as kai music. The Ignorant Z Dub Fanboys annoy the hell out of me with their bias, willful Ignorance and stubbornness.DragonBallKing wrote:I'm sure It depends on the person, but it's more common then you would think. You do still see, pretty much everywhere except here, people saying to watch the dub because the music is so much better. I think to a lot of people in English-speaking world, the replacement score is closer to what they culturally expect from an action series and what they've learned "fits". It's not nearly as annoying as when those same people say "skip Dragon Ball and just watch Z" though.

How is that even a comparison, All Might, Piccolo and Vegeta are completely different characters not to mention AM comes from a completely different show...8000 Saiyan wrote:I've been watching My Hero Academia lately. So what? Just because the three are different it means I can't think that Sabat is better at playing one character than two?Baggie_Saiyan wrote:How is that even a comparison, All Might, Piccolo and Vegeta are completely different characters not to mention AM comes from a completely different show...8000 Saiyan wrote:I've been watching My Hero Academia lately. I actually think there are guys out there who could have played Piccolo and Vegeta better than Sabat and you are Right Armstrong kind of roles are where Sabat is Best.Bansho64 wrote:And?Baggie_Saiyan wrote: How is that even a comparison, All Might, Piccolo and Vegeta are completely different characters not to mention AM comes from a completely different show...Them obviously being different characters and being from different shows shouldn't have anything to do with which ones he's better at playing. When I say All Might and Armstrong are Sabat's best roles In my opinion, that doesn't mean I dislike his Vegeta and Piccolo because they've both improved since 1999. Sabat's Vegeta now has a regal sounding tone to it, and his Piccolo doesn't sound like a grunting ogre anymore.

But I still don't see people disrespect the original Japanese version for other animes even if they prefer the dub, I've seen Bebop dub fans go on about how great It's dub Is but I don't see them saying Yamadera's Spike is crap compared to Blum's. On the other hand I've seen DBZ dub fans crap on Nozawa's performance and call Kikuchi's music "lame circus music".Dbzfan94 wrote:PLENTY of dub fans of all anime/games say (Dub actor) IS (this character.)DragonBallKing wrote:It's like DBZ is the only anime with dub elitists who say shit like "Sean Schemell is the only Goku not some old hag", Its the other way around for every other anime show I've seen.

"Oh, lots of people like the dub, it's over-hyped." I don't agree. The same could be said for anything. You can say that all of DB/Z was over-hyped if that's the outlook.
If we're talking about how heavily Toonami promoted it, then... that's just a sound business practice.
