Hmm...maybe so. I still think it screws a lot of people over though. I mean if Funimation decided to redub Yu Yu Hakusho for the reasons that they're using for the Season Set redub I'd be pissed.
Hironobu Timex wrote:I personally find the new audio options in the show's entirety to be a whole lot of fun. It's really the only reason I buy these sets.
Yeah they're nice but they're just, incomplete. 1999 Goku's talking to alternating 2007 and 1999 Vegeta. And 2007 Krillin's talking to 1999 Gohan and they're both fighting 2007 Freeza. I mean, this was going to be a reason I was going to buy these sets. I was thinking the dub was going to be on the calibur of Funimation's other dubs, but since it's slowly becoming more and more mangled with rather than fixed, I can't say that I like it anymore than I did before the redub. I don't like also how they did not revise too much either. Now they swear(rarely), and the Bardock being a scientist was gone but nearly everything else that was wrong with the dub that was supposed to be fixed still stands.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

I buy them because they're a ton of DBZ, cheap, with Japanese subtitles. I quite eagerly acknowledge their flaws while at the same time recognizing they aren't bad enough to keep me away.

I'm in a similar situation, the first set I paid good money for (and I own the ultimate uncuts) and I was really bummed about the product in general, I now own the second season set (which I thankfully haven't spent money on) and as far as I can see, it's gotten worse (especially the colors)

The thing that annoys me the most about these sets is that they are the ONLY option here in Australia if you want to see the original Japanese version with subtitles, I really want to collect the show, but not when it's this depressing.

Has anyone tried there Dragon Boxes on a up-converting DVD player yet?

Anyways.... I tried it the other day at 1080p, using HDMI on a widescreen 50 inch HD-TV. Wow it looks way better than what, FUNimation has produced yet.

Yes I did try the Season Sets, using the exact same setup as mentioned with the Dragon Boxes. Meh.. they look okay, this who widescreen ordeal has left a sour taste in my mouth. It's hard for me to watch the Season Sets, because I'm to angry at it, but it is nice to hear the original Japanese BGM playing with the American cast. At least FUNimation incromented the death lines Saban edited out. Muten Rushi: " I Smell death in the air" (I think theres a podcast VegettoEX did of it somewhere) But some might argue that the picture is nice!

So than I tried the Season Set of the exact same episode using my first Gen DVD player from 1999 using basic red, yellow, white RCA's on the exact same TV. It fucking looked like garbage.

So from there, I synced the 2 DVD players to match the same spot on the episode, and I swapped the inputs back in forth, to see how much I was actually gaining with the season sets.

I had overscan like crazy on the season sets, I couldn't change it, even in the DVD settings, or the TV settings. So I swapped back to the Dragon Box to compare. The season set with overscan was identical, to the Dragon Box horizontal width of the picture, so I was gaining nothing, plus the cropping at the top and the bottom, truly horrific!

I guess, I don't really have a point to all this, but at least I learned that the Dragon Boxes look better than the season sets, and even more better when upconverted. The seasons sets look like shit, especially when using old DVD players with RCA's on a high-def television. Your gaining nothing and loosing lots, for some weird unanswered question, we would all like to know the answer to.

Ayup. I've watched them upconverted by Faroudja's DCDi chipset, HQV's Reon chipset and I'll soon be doing so with an ABT chipset. All looked fantastic on my Pioneer.

But yeah, if your set has any overscan (which 99% or so do), the benefits of the "lawl more footage" FUNi releases are completely moot.

Yes, and added my own subtitles to them from FUNIs versions. It kills the wide screen releases.

I don't know if it's been confirmed by anybody but the Trunks and Bardock double feature that's coming out later on are being advertised as "Remastered and Restored". So I expect them to be like the season sets now.

You can't really, unless you feel like spending $40.00 on a used Bardock DVD. They're really rare. On Ebay and Amazon they go for A LOT!

I personally don't care. It's one thing to want to have the original form of the series. I just hope they won't be released on Blu-Ray. Anyways, It's alright. If Dragon Ball comes out in the "Remastered" format, I'd get that. I don't own any Dragon Ball and Z is really the only one I care about being in it's original state, despite the fact that I have all of GT in it's original form.

I don't want them to even touch Dragonball. All i want them to do is to print more Tournament,Red Ribbon, and Piccolo Jr Part 2 sets.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

They will touch Dragon Ball though, unfortunately...or fortunately, however you look at it. Anyway, you got it for $10? Hmm...I wouldn't have a problem with it being presented like that. At least I'd have it. And I'm talking about FUNimation's version. I wish I could get it for $10, but it seems impossible. I mean it's like you might THINK you're getting it for cheap and it might not turn out like that. For example, I wanted to get three Cell Games DVDs, went on Bestbuy.com to order them $15 a pop...great, good, awesome. Except for the fact that they're backordered, which means they're waiting for them to get shipped into the warehouse. Which we all know is a joke because they don't make them anymore, but it says I placed the order. At least those morons didn't take money from my card yet.

Wow really? Hmm...I went on Amazon and it said that Bardock new and used starting from like $50 or something...of course they didn't really have new. Though that was DVD. Gotta be careful, make sure you got the DVD and not the VHS...or that you got the uncut version. Anyway, if you got the Bardock DVD for $10 uncut, way to go :)

I can't wait for when Funi puts out DVDs with the Dragonbox footage turned upside-down.

I think that this is the last DBZ set FUNimation's releasing. How much more can they do?

And again, understand, this is for the future. In 5 years on Cartoon Network HD or the FUNimation channel in HD, when everyone is going to have HDTVs, this is the footage they will show. And if they would do that, and not release them on DVD, I can only imagine how many people would complain then.

Really? Wow, thank god for FYE. Honestly, every time someone mentions a rare set I usually have a story about buying it for $20 or less off the used rack at FYE.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

Where did you hear this?

If this is the case, then I guess I'm gonna have to snatch up copies of the first releases while I still can. :(

I know I can get at least the Trunks special for normal price, and I'm pretty sure with some searching and/or bartering I can also snag the Bardock special.
The rest of my Rightstuf sale order came and the insert from Movie 9 was recent and had release dates for the next three months . It was advertised right above Season 4 and it confirms that they are both remastered and restored. And will be released on February 19. The exact same day as Season 4 ironically.

I don't have a scanner to show everybody but it is confirmed they will be remastered.

You think that's nuts? Good luck finding a Japanese Dragon Ball Final Bout. I was looking on Ebay and they were going for $100 and whatnot. Got it for $20 brand new.
