Has anyone tried there Dragon Boxes on a up-converting DVD player yet?
Anyways.... I tried it the other day at 1080p, using HDMI on a widescreen 50 inch HD-TV. Wow it looks way better than what, FUNimation has produced yet.
Yes I did try the Season Sets, using the exact same setup as mentioned with the Dragon Boxes. Meh.. they look okay, this who widescreen ordeal has left a sour taste in my mouth. It's hard for me to watch the Season Sets, because I'm to angry at it, but it is nice to hear the original Japanese BGM playing with the American cast. At least FUNimation incromented the death lines Saban edited out. Muten Rushi: " I Smell death in the air" (I think theres a podcast VegettoEX did of it somewhere) But some might argue that the picture is nice!
So than I tried the Season Set of the exact same episode using my first Gen DVD player from 1999 using basic red, yellow, white RCA's on the exact same TV. It fucking looked like garbage.
So from there, I synced the 2 DVD players to match the same spot on the episode, and I swapped the inputs back in forth, to see how much I was actually gaining with the season sets.
I had overscan like crazy on the season sets, I couldn't change it, even in the DVD settings, or the TV settings. So I swapped back to the Dragon Box to compare. The season set with overscan was identical, to the Dragon Box horizontal width of the picture, so I was gaining nothing, plus the cropping at the top and the bottom, truly horrific!
I guess, I don't really have a point to all this, but at least I learned that the Dragon Boxes look better than the season sets, and even more better when upconverted. The seasons sets look like shit, especially when using old DVD players with RCA's on a high-def television. Your gaining nothing and loosing lots, for some weird unanswered question, we would all like to know the answer to.
