Other then character names, this dub's really not that bad.

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

I just think they didn't wanna be sued by Scion, you know, the car company? :) I don't mean to defend them, but I gotta play devil's advocate and say that in the English language when a and i are put together, they make this "ey" sound. I mean we don't call Dragon Balls "Duragon Boros" and everyone seems fine.

An attempt to actually explain the error in pronunciation! Waha, interesting theory. But . . . waitaminute, now; d'ya mean that Burger King didn't care to get sued, or that FUNimation didn't?!

lol Hope you see it as all in good fun like I do. Some people take it out o f proportion, but you seem to be cool about it lol

They just wanted to Americanize the series. "Sayan" sounds more American than "Scion". Just like Kaio-Ken I guess. Then again that's just absolutely weird. In the very first Budokai game, they got it...right. King Kai Fist. However, it just doesn't sound as cool. But the whole KaiO-Ken is a bit weird. Plus it's a different pronunciation than King Kai's name in the first place. But, that was all talked about in a Podcast somewhere.

You know, I figured out why I prefer the FUNimation version to the Japanese version. Actually I like both versions, depending what kind of mood I'm in. But, I realize why the FUNimation version doesn't bother me. It's because I don't like Anime. I mean, I really, REALLY don't like Anime. I can't stand it. The only thing that's Anime that I can stand to watch is DB/Z/GT, Cowboy Bebop and the Street Fighter MOVIES (not Street Fighter V, which was an absolutely horrible show). Anything else that's Anime, I can't stand. I don't like Inuyasha, I tried Yu-Yu-Hakusho but couldn't take it, I don't like Case Closed, I can't get myself to watch Full Metal Alchemist, couldn't stand Trigun, no offense to anyone here, I know lots of people likes these, but I can't bring myself to watch One Piece (Pirates...). And I know I'm gonna get in trouble for this one, but as far as Naruto goes...can't watch it at all. I tried twice, just doesn't work for me.

And I don't even want to get started on my hatred for Pokemon, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh. OHHH HOW I HATE THOSE THREE!

If there's any other Anime I could stand to watch, it's Lupin the 3rd...but that's about it. So I figure that's why I don't mind the FUNimation version, because I'm not an Anime buff. I mean sometimes it's nice to flip on the Japanese version to get that mystical type of classic cartoon feel. BUT, I'm very glad that I have the option to flip right back to the English track whenever I want.

Sometimes pronounciations get changed depending on the media. For example, that boy in the Jungle Book's name was pronounced differently in the movie than the way Kipling said it was, and his widow wasn't too happy about that.

Yeah, and lets not forget in Batman Begins, where Ra's Al Ghul's name was changed from "Ray-shh" to "Raz"

Actually, I got kinda upset by that because the rest of the movie was so true to the characters...well except for the whole Ra's Al Ghul taking him in to train him thing, but hey, they needed a villain somewhere right? But really, after a while, I didn't care anymore.

I'm pretty sure the decision wasn't at all connected, based on A) the fact that Scion wasn't really as well-known back then and B) it wasn't the first horrible pronunciation brought about by the old dub (Ka May Ah May Ah? Kay Oh Ken? *facepalm*).
I can't get myself to watch Full Metal Alchemist
BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mildly back on the topic of slight-pronunciation-alteration-to-avoid-lawsuit...ness...I'm reminded of the OVA of Bastard!! - the creator of the Manga was a huge fan of American classic rock bands and a lot of the locations, people and magic attacks were named after them (Whitesnake, Metallica, Megadeth, Guns and Roses, etc), so to avoid being sued for the English version they slightly altered them to things like Whitos Neiki, Meta-Rikana, Gunsanros, etc. I always figured this was the likely reason as well for why Zoro's name became Zolo in the (cringe) dub of One Piece, and was later (stupidly -_-) changed in the Manga, to avoid connection to the Zoro more familiar to western audiences.

You know, I just sincerely hope you know that I was joking when I suggested they wanted to avoid being sued by Scion.

Anyways, it doesn't bother me. And as I said, I figured out why I like the FUNimation version, because I'm not into Anime. When I walk into a store where it has DVDs laid out, if I have to go through the Anime section, for some reason I get embarrassed. Whenever I bought anything of Dragon Ball, or Cowboy Bebop, I was always ashamed a bit, because I was standing in an isle with cartoon chicks on the cover of DVD boxes that are barely covered, with "mature" sex cartoons laid everywhere. Geez. I'm just curious, is the nudity necessary? Like when I watch any sort of Anime, there always seems to be a random unnecessary scene of nudity. In Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, did they really need to show Chun-Li showering, and showing her boobs? Or like in Street Fighter Generations, where Sakura was taking a bath with some other girl. Or like in Inuyasha, like the only time I watched it, there was a random scene of the main girl in the tub for like 30 seconds that had nothing to do with the show. It's just weird to me.

I'll never forget last February when I was in the Virgin store, buying Dragon Ball Z Season 1 (saw it by accident, walked in there just to check out DVDs), and some other stuff. I was about to pay for my stuff, and I usually like to make small talk with the people working there, especially if it's girls. And I asked her if anyone actually bought the cartoon porn. And she laughed and said that mostly kids and middle aged guys do. I was like, "Woooow"

All of the stuff that you're referring to is called fanservice. It can come in the form of nudity, unnecessary extreme violence, or a variety of other things. Hell, even Dragonball has it.(Extra long transformation sequences, extended battles). It's just an anime thing really.
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

...Why nudity? I wouldn't compare a long transformation to seeing Chun-Li's boobs as she showers. I mean really.

Are you implying that this kind of thing is exclusive to Anime?

If so, wow. You really need to take a better look at the American media.

While it is true that American media often has shower scenes and whatnot, they usually are there to serve a double purpose. BESIDES, you don't see it in cartoons, you see it in movies. Sorry, but if I'm watching Jessica Alba taking a shower, I go nuts...if I see a cartoon taking a shower, I stare at it with a blank expression on my face waiting till it's over. I personally don't get it up on cartoons.

Often times when it's done in movies, these scenes offer something more than just a shower, or whatnot. They show emotions. For example, while showering, the person expresses some sort of emotion related to the situation, as opposed to just...doing it.

And I can understand a show like Batman, for example, doing it. I bring it up a lot because I love this damn show. I can understand because it's a realistic type of show...well more realistic than most Anime you're going to find. You start to feel for the characters. They develop emotional bonds that seem realistic, as opposed to cartoony. So the very rare times that they do have certain suggestive scenes, they serve a purpose. In the Mask of the Phantasm movie, there's a makeout scene that fades out and comes back in with the girl sitting outside in a nightgown and him getting out of the shower. Yeah...well, the movie was structured like a live-action movie. It's supposed to show you that there's a connection between these two, and you see their passion and happiness and whatnot. They didn't show her taking a shower for 2 minutes just for the hell of it. By the way, that's an example, they didn't have a shower scene in there.

Why there you are, hitting the nail on the head! When the media is telling a story, should its elements not contribute to the story and/or its characters? And if it is so necessary to include extra fanservice", it shouldn't be too hard to get it to mean something in the context of the story
(Grumble grumble, window not letting me read text...)
Like... the nudity in the first couple episodes of DB... that certainly serves a purpose, we agree?
The Vegeta-in-the-shower-argues-with-Bulma scene had a purpose.
And... then there's violence. Well, it is an action story...
There's Videl's beatdown at the hands of Spopovich... which... shows more into the two characters you might say.
But, why is this the limits of "not quite public stuff that develops character" most of the time? There's plenty of nudity and gore and death, but bowel movements are the things of comedy! ... what? Wherefore doth thou looketh upon me in such a manner? *runs*

(Yeah, uh, I have no answer other than a lot of "*sigh* define art.")
