Episode #0106! VegettoEX, Meri, and Julian discuss this week's news, which clearly makes up for the lack of news in the previous week. Live action casting, FUNimation releases, and an IGN list top the news. We then dive into our final thoughts on "Sparking! METEOR" which you may be playing as "Budokai Tenkaichi 3". How does the third installment compare, and where is it heading? Meri's own Top 5 plot twists, December's releases, and some great e-mails round out the episode. Referenced sites:
Go ahead and grab it. Big thanks to godofchaos for hosting the fantascarino *one-hundred-six* episodes, now.

Holy crap... it's a monster episode! Woo-hoo! All sorts of great discussions came up in the normal round of conversation, so expect all sorts of awesomeness. Just not of the "manga review"-type this episode :P. I have no additional comments, since all additional comments were in the episode.

Nice podcast. Funny ending. Liked you guys' top 5 twists.

Also from what I heard, the Dead Zone commentary is more humorous than informative and some guys said they thought it was funny.

That Dead Zone commentary was the most frightening thing I've ever heard.

There's nothing funnier than listening to two people that clearly find themselves hilarious.

...

Moving on, great podcast, really enjoyed the Sparking Meteor/BT3 final thoughts and a list of plot twists that actually made sense.

Keep up the good work!

Really enjoyed your thoughts on Sparking! Meteor. I especially appreciate when video games are reviewed on the podcast. As an avid gamer, and a Dragonball fan this helps me decide what to throw my limited funds at. Thanks again and keep it up guys.

I'm really impressed by how you guys dissected the game for the final thoughts. Your review on Sparking! NEO wasn't even close to being as informative as this one. To think that VegettoEX would actually praise the game more than a few times, one would assume that he was actually getting more curious and dove (dived?) into a Sparking! game more than necessary. I haven't played the game yet, but since I've played the previous two, I guess I can relate to the review. I kind of wish that Spike (that goes for Dimps, as well) would stop developing games within such a short annual development period, or else next-gen Sparking!/Budokai games would start sucking very quickly.

And thank God! Meri, when you said that Jamie Chung looks like a "slutty Asian", I literally cheered for you. :P For the longest time, I thought only Asians like myself can tell how most Asians casted in American movies are fairly unattractive. This definitely made my day.

Overall, this episode is by far the giddiest, mentioning puberty, sluts, Bob the boxset and the such (and sober, too!). Here's hoping for giddy episodes in the future.

Edit- Hehe, just finished listening. I was the one who got made fun of for e-mailing the question concerning the color of the Kamehameha. Yeah, fanboyz lolz.

I agree about all the amazing games coming out at the same time...Galaxy, Halo 3, Orange Box, Assasin's Creed, COD4, Mass Effect and Rock Band are all ranked higher in my "must play" list.

Imagine if Brawl ended up coming out on December 3rd

Yeah, I did listen to that commentary when I first got the Dead Zone re-release. I wasn't expecting anything informative, I just thought "Y... you're kidding me, right? I've got to hear this!" Sure enough, it's just a bunch of random talk. It IS kinda funny, but perhaps the funniest thing about it is the irony - how they wander in their speech and only really comment on the film every now and again.

Here's some of my favorite moments from the commentary:

The guy who voiced Garlic Jr. saying "FLY!!" when Garlic Jr. makes a long leap, his cape flying behind him, to nail Kami into a pillar.

The same guy mentioning, at the part where Gohan pisses on Kuririn, that there was a DragonBall episode where Goku peed on his periscope (he also played Emporer Pilaf). The others then go into a ludicrous tangent about how funny it sounds to say "peeing on my periscope".

One of the actors talking about how his baby daughter was trying to get up off the floor, and grabbed his chest hairs for support, yanking a bunch of them out and causing him severe pain. I cannot remember, for the life of me, how they got on that subject.

When the "Detekoi Tobikiri ZENKAI Power" credits begin, with the goofy "child's drawing" backdrop, one of the actors remark, "Hey, I LOVE Super Mario Bros.!"

Anyway, that should give you an idea of how absurd and unrelated the commentary is. I'm not defending it, I just thought it WAS funny after all - because it proves how ignorant FUNi and (most of) its employees are.
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

What, you'd prefer the commentary be dry and comment only on what's happening on the screen? I love how they go off-topic like that, it's great!

Good episode. Meri's comments were great. I think I may now not buy Sparking! Meteor based on your comments, so know that your review wasn't late enough to be irrelevent. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who doesn't buy games as soon as they come out.

I think what they're saying is that the commentary should be informative, interesting, or at least relevent. Because if it's just some guys saying a bunch of random crap, what's the point? I can say a bunch of random crap. Anyone can.

I remember listening to the commentaries on the Boogiepop dvds, which featured the dub director, voice actors, and other such people. It was clear that the director had studied the show, the light novels it was based on, and the movie, and he was therefore able to include a lot of interesting information in the commentaries that really illuminated the show. Granted, it would be hard to do that sort of thing for something as simple as a DBZ movie, but if they don't have anything interesting to say on a commentary track, why include one at all?

Pretty good podcast. Been waiting for this Sparking! METEOR review episode for a while, and I liked it. Putting "Goku's an Alien" at the top of the 5 biggest plot twists in DB was perfect. Also, the ending with poor Julian being terrorized by Mike to do the usual goodbye that they do in every episode in languages that Julian doesn't know was the best part of the podcast! Keep it up!
Next quest: Buy the Super: Broly and Super Hero Blurays, also Daima whenever that releases in the states. Also the Super Manga!

Regarding the commentary:

I actually ended up listening to the entire thing. I happened to do so while playing Sparking! METEOR, but regardless, I did so. There actually ended up being quite a bit of "behind-the-scenes" info on who did what voices, stories from the booth, etc. Unfortunately, the ratio of that material to the pure nonsense was ridiculous. It wasn't interesting, it wasn't funny, and if I wasn't playing a video game and happened to really be watching the movie along with it, I would have turned it off pretty quickly.

I guess I just expect more from an official release. I don't want to make excuses for podcasts, but since we're literally just fans doing it for the fun of it, it feels more appropriate for us to have some tangents every so often. When it's the people who were actually behind the production I'm watching/listening to... I just expect more. There *was* some in there, and it wasn't enough.

And no, dude... you were not the first voice of Tenshinhan.

(Side note... I've been meaning to check out Commentary Central [iTunes link] for a while, now. This may satiate some of what I desire.)

Seems like the game review is going over somewhat well... I'm glad. I actually thought the past reviews were better than this one, but responses always prove my thoughts wrong :P.

I'm in the middle of listening to the podcast now, and you mentioned how it would probably be completely different to play against human opponents. Your right, and in my opinion its kind of a problem. This game seems to be better suited to playing the computer. When I play against a person, its gets really messed up, theres too much teleporting, and we always teleport at the same time because we usually use the same move over and over again ( punch, punch, punch, punch, teleport). Plus, its now impossible to direct an energy attack in the direction you want, so hitting a human opponent with a kamehameha is virtually impossible. To beat a human opponent you pretty much have to constantly attack them, even when their down, and not give them a chance to counter. But that elimates the fun for the other guy, who just gets frustrated because you keep using rush attacks on him and he has no control.

I'm still a fan of the game though

Commentaries don't have to be completely dry and dull (though it's preferable to the tripe on dead zone)

In my opinion for the perfect balance for an audio commentary, look no further than Futurama; it's great fun to listen too, has the people involved in all areas of production (animation, voice acting, writing etc) yet still manages to inform the viewer while keeping things light and fun.

Sort of like Daizex the podcast.

Yes. Mike and Julian sang all of the songs and Meri did all the voices. Read the credits man!

I'm not much of a gamer, so I pretty much skipped from the news to Meri's Top 5 list. I'm kinda surprised that King Piccolo killing Shenron didn't make the list. I mean he's the eternal dragon! Regardless of my not being that in the know when it comes to most games, I can definitely understand how Sparking Meteor could be given back seat to stuff like Mario Galaxy (and heaven forbid what would happen if Brawl didn't get pushed back, as fps_anth brought up!).

Hehe, is it creepy that I immediately knew where Julian was going when he brought up the railroad crossing sign? As for taking tests, I'm pretty much share Meri's opinion of double-checking stuff only for math. I've gotten points docked off due to stupid mistakes enough times (at times even making the difference between an A and a B+) to learn to do so :?.

Ah, leave it to Julian to go off and do DB movie surveys for the sake of the podcast. I think it'd definitely be pretty interesting to hear their opinions on all the stuff that's been going down.

I personally liked the the commentary on the UUE version. Then again, I haven't really watched it since it first came out (back when I thought other people laughing meant that the comment had to be funny to me as well). And while it was mainly just random talk, what would you expect from them? I mean, I'm sure they'd have much more interesting factoids to bring up if it wasn't just focused on the VAs. The commentary for The Incredibles, for example, barely focused on the voice jobs and talked more about stuff like character designs and how there were bits and pieces of the writers' and VAs' actual facial features that were used for characters in the movies. And for the most part, I was actually interested in what they were saying for the entire 2+ hours of that commentary (which even went on through the ending credits).

The way I see it, the guys at FUNi just weren't as involved with the actual movie than the Japanese cast and crew were, so it makes sense that they also wouldn't have much to talk about and would resort to going off on wild tangents like chest hair.

And yeah, I'd definitely love to get a commentary from the DaizEX crew on the movies. I've seen sites where they'd do the same thing with Harry Potter movies, and I think you guys could do an even better job (what with your guys' technical um... savvyness as well as vast knowledge of the series).

Hehe, I remember noticing that Julian said he knew four or so languages in that User Locations/Languages Sticky and was wondering when Mike would use that to his advantage .

I wouldn't've expected you to find the commentary funny, but I respect the fact that you actually listened to it all the way through.

...and yeah, I thought the same thing when Chris Cason said that. He was reffering to the first in-house Tien voice, but at the same time I try to block out Matt Smith's voice for the character. He's a good actor, but as Tien he was very...eh.
