Both from catalogs from 1997...

Just wanted to confirm, Dragon Ball movies were released on VCD. I don't remember exactly which movies it is that I own on VCD but I know for a fact that I have Dragon Ball movie 2, Z movie 5 and Z movie 11. I know I have more than just those, but they're kind of hard to get out of the packaging and I've damaged it before trying.dougo13 wrote:Not 8mm FILM. But 8mm tapes I could see. Maybe even VCD, though that was more a thing in China. I do remember seeing some stuff released on that format but not DB specifically...
Oh man, I'm kind of jealous right now.One_Instance wrote:If you or anyone else wants me to open them up and take a look at which movies in particular I have, I'll be happy to do so.
Forgot to mention, these are Chinese. I'm not sure if Dragon Ball VCD's were ever a thing in Japan.
Also probably important to mention: I only ever played these once, just to make sure they worked and it wasn't even a full watch through. I'd be willing to take a longer look to provide more info though.

Y'see, apparently those VCDs contain the isolated music and effects track.

Movie 1 of Dragon Ball was released on VCD in Hong Kong with bilingual audio (Cantonese and Japanese sharing a stereo track).One_Instance wrote:Just wanted to confirm, Dragon Ball movies were released on VCD. The one I have of Movie 1 doesn't (licensed Panorama HK release). The audio is worse than the Japanese track on Funimation's DVDs.clutchins wrote:Oh man, I'm kind of jealous right now.

That's only the music track the LDs have; the VCDs are unique in having the full M&E track.clutchins wrote:In 224kbps MP2 audio...
LDs on the other hand have PCM.
Which VCD releases are you referring to?Robo4900 wrote:That's only the music track the LDs have; the VCDs are unique in having the full M&E track.clutchins wrote:In 224kbps MP2 audio...

Maybe that's where the Speedy Malaysian dub got their sound effects from. I remember someone here mentioning how the Speedy dub had oddly clear sound effects.Robo4900 wrote:Oh man, I'm kind of jealous right now.One_Instance wrote:If you or anyone else wants me to open them up and take a look at which movies in particular I have, I'll be happy to do so.

I think it was more popular in Japan in general, so I imagine people stuck with it a little longer.ringworm128 wrote:I always thought Betamax died before DBZ was even a thing. Did it have a longer life in Japan like Laserdisc did?
Rumours have it that that is indeed exactly where they got their M&E tracks.ringworm128 wrote:Maybe that's where the Speedy Malaysian dub got their sound effects from. I remember someone here mentioning how the Speedy dub had oddly clear sound effects.
I've been thinking of doing it myself, but right now it's a matter of when. I've had an uncharacteristically busy year this far, but I might shoot you a PM whenever I get around to it.Robo4900 wrote:I'd love to have those M&E tracks from those VCDs, but alas, no one has ripped them online so far.

The existence of the movie 17 LD is known. A friend of mine has a copy of it, and is currently looking into ripping it.dougo13 wrote:Found this by accident today while looking for info on another format (VHD):

Says this disc was released in 1996 but little other info is available and the data could have come out of a catalog but there was a for sale listing for the disc at one time. Something else to look into maybe...
Well, Kanzenshuu lists Betamax and 8mm release dates.NinjaGoku wrote:Haven't seen anywhere DB movies were released on Betamax or 8mm Video in Japan commercially. You really sure it exists?
