Do you mean that little "Dragonball Z - Special Feature"-thing at the start? I'd assume that the Bardock-special has it, seeing how the old release did, but I don't know about the Trunks-special though.
I think he means the preview where Goku explains what happens. I think the Bardock special has it on the DragonBox, but not the Trunks special. Might be one of those peculiar things that Fuji TV lost.

In any case, I had read that FUNimation apparently did a better job with encoding on this release. Hopefully this is the beginning of better quality discs from the company as a whole, especially since Geneon is gone now :(

Oh, the next episode-preview. Without even owning the disc, I can still say that... no. They've never had the next episode-previews before, as Toei simply never gave them the masters for them (Except Dragonball GT). There is no reason to assume that they've randomly gotten them now.

I'll probably netflix this to see the dub with Solid State Scouter. I remember being really disappointed when I got the VHS tape about 7-8 years ago hoping that FUNi would pull some strings to get SSS playing with the dub.

Sweet! 8)

I'll be picking these sets up for sure. So far I'm really impressed with the image quality, and it looks the the original Japanese OP has been retained in the English dub (right?)

What? Are they really? I hadn't heard about that. Geneon was pretty much the golden standard when it came to US animé releases.

I believe that was their downfall. They couldn't turn a decent enough profit and went under. So yeah, a company puts great products out on the market and they go belly up. Another company mutilates products beyond recognition and end up at the top.

New person is credited with encoding on a few recent Funi disks, appears the old guy is gone.

While the quality still isn't perfect, its a step or 2 away from it.

Also, Geneon DID have a few encoding sinkers, people just tended to forgive them easier because the majority of their stuff was near pristine.

I'm sure there's a nice middle-ground somewhere.

Some one has to post Eng Dub -with- solid state. It just sounds too good to be true, so ill believe it when I see it.

Well, since all the reviews for this seem to be mostly positive, I guess I will be picking this up, at least for collection purposes.
I know it was mentioned, but just to confirm it, apparently Funimation fired the guy who was doing the encoding, because of "quality loss" so apparently the new season sets, and this box set have significantly better quality and encoding, so, hooray for that.

Agreed. It also seems like FUNi is playing the price card with this double feature. Checking amazon right now, it looks like both of the discs individually are going for around $30 each. And from what I've heard, the video quality isn't exactly top notch on those. Then again, you could say the same thing with their current release, making the specials widescreened.

...so I guess it's a trade off.

And yeah, I'm glad to see that their "remastering" has improved from their earlier releases. Though it's quite a shame that the Saiyan and Namek episodes were treated like guinea pigs in all this.

I'd say more the Namek episodes than the Saiyan episodes. It's like when Vegeta left he took the other characters' skin tones with him just to spite them.

There can only be one This is Bardock in Español de Latin America. As it was meant to be seen without any fancy handwaving and remaster(bat)ing for the niceness of picture. Nice pics for the new release though...

Why on Earth would GoC lie about this?

Let's not bring up Steve Franko's side office hobby as he supervised the first couple season runs. :P Yes, masturbation joke that he ejaculated on the film reels. >>;;

Dunno if that's a fair, "As meant to be seen" comparison. For one thing, YouTube craps on the video quality.

I'd say the old releases look just fine. Sure, they have some grain and film-damage, but then again, every single Dragonball-DVD FUNi ever released had that. Personally, the fact that the video freezes for a second right before the credits bothers me more than the quality.

Great news, you guys! Somebody on the FUNimation forums has reported that "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" is finally used as the opening song in the English-with-Japanese-music track. The bad news is that this appears to only be true for the Burdock special. Apparently, the Trunks special still replaces "Head-Cha-La" with Mark Menza's dub theme. Oh well, at least we appear to be getting all of the music for the Burdock special.

Anyway, for the rest of my post I'll just copy/paste my FUNi Forums response.

I've got a question. Are both of the original Japanese ending songs included on the Eng-with-Jap-music tracks for the specials? I know that all of the regular background music has been included (including "Solid State Scouter" from Burdock's special), so if the ending songs are included, then I'm sold.

As for the comparison shots, not bad, if I do say so myself. I think the colors have been drastically inproved, especially in that second shot where Gohan's holding Goku. I can't deal with the unintended widescreen for 291 episodes, but I can live with it for two 50-minute specials (especially considering the fact that these two specials, along with Dragon Ball movie 1, are the only DB/DBZ/GT productions that I've never seen before, so my excitement is kinda blinding my better judgement here.). Plus, as somebody who can never truly completely hate the FUNi dub, the English with Japanese music track makes this a must-buy for me, especially now that "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" is being used as the opening, if only for one special.

I refuse to buy the season sets, but if FUNimation does this well for the eventual movie re-re-releases, then I plan on owning those as well.

So when is the DB Movie 3-pack coming out anyway? I haven't seen anything for it at all, except for murmurs of it on these forums. All I found on Amazon was the listing for the old release.
