Yeah, Goku always was kind of selfish.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

He not selfish when it really counts. He would not want a guy like Vegeta to live just because he wanted to fight him again. It was a part of it (just like when he spared Piccolo.), but the bigger part would be because Goku is a hero, and the heroes always take the high road.desirecampbell wrote:But, just like Goku's speech to Vegeta in the Boo arc before fusing, it's just not Goku. But I'm talking about the Saiyan saga redub that they did after they finished the series.TheGreatness25 wrote:Maybe you're just paying attention to it because you know it's gonna happen lol I didn't even notice that really, but that is annoying I guess. Then again, FUNimation doesn't do that on purpose I think. See, it's going back to when Goku's dad was said to be a scientist. The reason that mistake happened was because they didn't know what would happen in the series. The dub team bought out those episodes, and didn't know what would happen afterwards. I doubt that FUNimation saw the entire series before dubbing it. I think they watch a Saga at a time when dubbing really.

Thats a good bit different than letting a monster live because you want a sparring partner. His wanting Vegeta to be spared has to come from a pure place. A person with a heart as pure as Goku's would not have a capacity for great selfisness.TheGreatness25 wrote:Goku is selfish. The guy can disappear for years at a time without saying a word to anyone.

I.e. Goku telling Krillin to spare Vegeta because he might join them one day, but in the JPN version, he only wants him alive so that he can fight him again.
Yeah, that just kills me. I mean, sure we've all seen the series, but that basically kills any kind of surprise for new fans. As for us veterans, it's just annoying because we know it shouldn't be there.
Either way, they shouldn't even hint at Vegeta becoming a "good guy" later on.

In DB, Goku's best friends were his enemies, or didn't like him at first. Krillin, Yamcha, Puar, Oolong, Bulma had her little bit in the first episode, Piccolo.
Anyway, I didn't say Goku thought of himself as selfish. He doesn't see anything wrong for leaving years at a time. But when you've got a wife, two kids, and a bunch of friends, leaving them to train a kid you met 15 minutes ago is pretty damn selfish. And I don't know about all that, but I think Goku spared Vegeta for the same reason he spared everyone else he fought, even Frieza: he couldn't bring himself to kill anyone. Especially that early on. Yeah, at the Cell Saga, he changed his outlook, but he couldn't even bring himself to kill Frieza, who murdered entire galaxies worth of inhabitants, who killed his own people, who killed his best friend and almost killed his son. Goku couldn't kill Frieza. Even after Frieza tried to attack him, Goku held back so that Frieza wouldn't die from that "final blow".

I don't know about anyone else, but when I first started watching DBZ, I always thought that Vegeta was going to end up like those pesky cartoon villians a la Joker or Magneto or *cringes* Mojo JoJo who just never goes away and always comes up with some new way to attack the heroes.

Actually when I was young, I really disliked Goku. I liked Vegeta as my favorite, even though I only got up to the Namek Saga and he wasn't exactly a good guy back then. I always made fun of GOku like, "Whew, got here 3 hours after everyone got their ass kicked, but hey it's all good. Krillin? Damn near dead? Ah it's okay. Everyone is almost dead. Who cares. *GASP* Gohan! He wet his pants from being scared! Nooo! GRR KAMEHAMEHA!"
No, I wouldn't go that far...it was weird how he was all cheery when he arrived at Namek even though Gohan was practically dead.

Looked back at saw this; I actually like this speech better. Goku turns all of Vegeta's blabbering since the Trunks saga back on him.Captain Awesome wrote:They went way over the top with that one, rambling on about "A new race" and "Old birthrights" when in the JP version Goku's basically like "Boo absorbed everyone you fucker, even your son and your wife!"
The circumstances afterward inadvertantly made the dub speech more impactful. Vegeta for the first time ever since he became a Z-Warrior started cooperating and was actually working together with Goku when they fought Kid Buu. BTW how did this topic about a Bardock/History Of Trunks DVD double feature turn into a discussion about Goku's character?

Cuz when the news is actually positive people gotta find something else to potentially argue over.jjgp1112 wrote:BTW how did this topic about a Bardock/History Of Trunks DVD double feature turn into a discussion about Goku's character?

Well, wandering back to the actual topic.
I just sat and watched both versions of the Bardock special back to back. I had seen both, but my boyfriend hadn't, and now he's FINALLY understanding why I get so mad about ridiculous script changes. I don't mind the English version as much now, having heard it without all the crappy music that it was originally weighed down with (Sum 41 and American Hi-Fi, really?). And hearing Solid State Scouter with the English made my day.
Too bad there was no re-dubbing at all. Some of the dialogue is fairly painful. And I really dislike the name "Fasha." My only real complaint (since can never be bothered to complain about widescreen - ever) is Japanese mono. I know this is how Funi always does it with the Season Sets, but I hate it. Japanese Stereo, please. That's probably too much to ask.
All in all, I'm satisfied. The "re-mastering" or whatever you want to call it wasn't horrendous.
