Does Goku have a catch phrase?

Post by okpank » Thu Apr 03, 2008 11:27 am

As everyone knows Naruto always has his catch phrase "Dattebayo" or the infamous "Believe It!" So I was talking with my friends the other day, and one of them said that Goku has a catch phrase!? He said that it's only in the Japanese version, of which I've seen not much, but enough to think I would know. As for me being the biggest DB fan out of the bunch, I was seriously surprised to here this. Not knowing this for sure made me mad, so I decided to come here after finding zip diddy nothing elsewhere! I ask this question to find the cold hard truth behind this! Thanks!

As mentioned, there's his trademark greeting of "Ossu!" which appears most frequently in the next episode previews as "Ossu! Ora Gokuu!"

When he was a kid, he also said variations of "Hara hetta na..." ("I'm hungry...") fairly often, but the constantly hungry gag kind of died out over time, so he says it less and less as the series progresses.

I guess his overall speaking style and dialect ("ora," "omee," etc) could probably be considered catchphrases themselves in a way, too, since that's all "tteba yo" really is in the grand scheme of things.

Pretty much exactly what I would have responded with, except I'd also say the following:

The above quote is what Goku introduces the next-episode-previews with (through all TV three series). A next-episode-preview "catch-phrase" is not exclusive to Goku, but rather appears in just about any show you can think of. Whether it's just text on-screen or a character saying it, it's a staple. For example, in Flame of Recca, Recca ends every next-episode-preview by saying, "My heart is burning with fire!"

As for something along the lines of Naruto's "-dattebayo"... not really. Goku has an interesting way of speaking (which we've covered on the site before, and if you search around on the forum, you'll probably find a bunch of other threads), but other than possibly, "Nobiro, Nyoibo!" and "Kamehameha!"... you'll be pretty hard-pressed to find something that similar. Those are attacks, so they'd only compare with something like, "Rasengan!"

I was also going to mention the "hungry" stuff, but Rach just responded with it as I was typing this up :P.

There's also his "Thank you!" ("sankyuu!"). He says that quite a bit, though seemingly more so in the anime.

Based on sheer volume of repetition, it's probably something like "HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA".

In Dragon Ball, during fights, he would do this obnxious little laugh when he got the best of this opponent. It went something like, "hee-heeee". He always did that.

Goku's "Hih'n' hih'n'!" is so kawaii~!
</fangirl> (O.O and I wonder why people question my gender...)

Super Butoden opens with a black screen and the voice of Goku declaring, "Osu! Ora Goku! Itta notto mikka!" (Ur... I still can't figure out what the last part means for the life of me. <-- probably spelling it wrong. *blames it on a combination of Goku's accent and my bad skills with o/a in such contexts*).

Everything minus the "Ora Goku!" is also in one of Chibi Goku's intro cutscenes in Ultimate Battle 22. (And one of his win scenes is started with that little "Heh'n heh'n!" laugh... XD).

... Yeah. And the main menu of Sparkin!, features the (now apparent) "Osu! Ora Goku!", and I think said line was also parodied in Super Milk-Chan (and probably other places I haven't seen... XD).

... Ur... umm... Yatta!

Isn't that more of a Japanese generalization?

Usually a chatchphrase is something unique and special to the character.

That's basically the catchphrase of anyone voiced by Masako Nozawa when they get hit.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

I guess people have a hard time differentiating battlecries from catchphrases?

I think Goku's catchphrase is "Maa, ii ka!" ("Oh well!"). I'm pretty sure he said that quite often. And how about "wakuwaku" ("excited")? He says that often as well.

Goku's saying, "Iccho yatte mikka!" which I think means "Let's fight it out!"

I just had to list the "Hueehkkk!!" one because it means a lot to me. I know its more of a battle cry, but because of it, I got my voice from that of a 90 year old chain smoker, to that of Masako Nozawa's evil clone. I get a lot of love for my "crazy asian lady scream".

Isn't Goku also known to say something to the effect of "I won't know until I try?" ... it seems that pops up right before a large battle often.
