Garlic Jr. and Pilaf
Do you think that Garlic Jr. was based in any way on Pilaf? Personally I think there may have been a little influence there but I wanted to hear what others thought.

Toriyama has a fondness for little blue/green imp type figures. If you look at Chronno Trigger there's a number of them, and I'm willing to bet they exist in Dragon Quest and Dr. Slump as well. So I don't think the characters are related or based on each other so much as there are things he just likes drawing.

If you think about it, the movies all ripped off/were influenced by something in the series. Garlic Jr. could be Pilaf. It played on the whole "Gohan's hidden powers" thing from the fight against Raditz. The World's Strongest was... I guess it didn't really rip anything off. The Tree of Might's villain, though cool and badass, was pretty much the most unoriginal thing I've ever seen. And it played off the whole Saiyan thing from the Saiyan Saga. Lord Slug was a Namekian (Namek Saga), there was a shot of Gohan (laying on his back with blood from his mouth) which was EXACTLY like when Recoome pummeled him, and it played off that whole Goku's quasi Super Saiyan transformation. The Cooler movies played off Frieza (and Namek in the second one). Android 13 played off the whole Android Saga. Broly...was pretty original, but it had this King Vegeta timeline feel to it. The Fusion Reborn movie played off of the Vegito fusion (trying to make it original by having a different fusion) and the villain looked like a Buu rip-off in the beginning, and then a Cell rip-off after transforming. You get the idea. Now of course some of you may not feel that way, but to me, the movies just give off this "rip-offish" or "heavily influenced" feel to it. Much like GT for that matter.

The movies were basically one-off romps of fun and fighting made for special occasions so they weren't the most creative/original pieces in the franchise. I don't know that I'd say they echo that heavily though.
I must say though, the inclusion of a (badass) Nameccian character really does not automatically say "hey, this is based off when they're on Namek!" any more than showing a Sayiajin says "hey, this is like those random flashback episodes that show Vegetasei!"

Actually, according to the Toriyama interview in Daizenshuu 6, DBZ movie 12 was developed before Toriyama thought of Vegetto. He then thought up the potara so that he could have Goku and Vegeta fuse in a unique way.TheGreatness25 wrote:The Fusion Reborn movie played off of the Vegito fusion (trying to make it original by having a different fusion)
That makes sense, although I'm not sure Garlic Jr. was one the movie villians that Toriyama designed. But it could just be a result of Toei's designers copying his standard character designs, so same difference.Velasa wrote:Toriyama has a fondness for little blue/green imp type figures...So I don't think the characters are related or based on each other so much as there are things he just likes drawing.
Just to be nick-picky, Planet Vegeta is called Wakusei Vegeta in Japanese (well, wakusei bejiita), not x-sei along the lines of Namek-sei and Kaio-sei. Also, Nail's name is spelt with an 'i' even when directly romanized, so it'd be Neiru instead of Neru.Velasa wrote:"hey, this is like those random flashback episodes that show Vegetasei!"

I haven't paid enough attention to the sayiajin to notice that before. Where's it come from?Herms wrote:Just to be nick-picky, Planet Vegeta is called Wakusei Vegeta in Japanese (well, wakusei bejiita), not x-sei along the lines of Namek-sei and Kaio-sei. And as for Neru that's habit from years and years ago, when the people I came into the fandom with called him that. I'm aware of the diffrence, but it's etched into my skull after all these years.
Mmmmmmhh...... Daimaou......Rocketman wrote:No, it says "Hey, remember King Piccolo? You liked that, right?".

There so needed to be more awesome Nameccians. The only guys who even got named were Daimaou, Kami, Pic, Dende, Cargo, Neru, Saichoro, Muuri, Kattatsu and Sluggu. It brings much sadness to my green-boy-loving heart.

You mean Wakusei Vegeta? Wakusei is just another way of saying "planet" in Japanese. Aside from coming before rather than after the planet's name, it's slightly different from sei in that it refers specifically to planets, while sei can refer to stars and pretty much any other shiny thing in the sky.Velasa wrote:I haven't paid enough attention to the sayiajin to notice that before. Yeah, I have a few things like that. For instance, I always say 'tankouban' rather than 'tanoubon', thought I'm getting better at it.And as for Neru that's habit from years and years ago, when the people I came into the fandom with called him that. I'm aware of the diffrence, but it's etched into my skull after all these years.
Don't forget Tsuuno! Although technically Kami and Saichourou aren't even names, just titles. So it's even worse. There so needed to be more awesome Nameccians.
