Or following that it’s weird Mark Menza’s Generic stock music opening is used for the dub w/Japanese music as it’s kind of false advertising.
That said at least they’re not using Dale Kelly’s opening![]()

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release
Maybe they stopped wanting to pay extra to the company that did the dubbing? Pretty sure, unless I heard wrong, that they got materials they used to dub Z from the Mexican Spanish dubbing studio when it wasn't directly from Toei, right? And they also translated part of the time from the Spanish dub for the English one, right? I'm not 100% on the behind-the-scenes info of the dub of Z, so correct me if I'm wrong here. That & a lack of suitable audio materials are the only reasons I can see. It's not like they have other language dubs than the Japanese & English ones anyways, so it's not like it matters in the longrun.SuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 7:08 pmI don't know if there's been any particular reason given in terms of why the Mexican/Spanish dub stopped being included after the UUE's died.eledoremassis02 wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 5:44 pm Was there ever a reason as to why they stopped with the Spanish dub after UUC? Could be, but on the BRs, with more space available, they could have more.MasenkoHA wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 7:15 pm I thought it was a lack of space?
The Ultimate Uncut had
Japanese audio
English audio
Spanish audio
The remastered boxsets had
Japanese audio
English Audio with Japanese Background Music
English Audio with US Background Music
Only dubs that matter are DB, Kai, & Super. Nothing else.

I'd imagine the reason why the Japanese OP/EDs were used on the US Dragon Box is an acknowledgement that the sets are for fans of the Japanese version of the show. Remember that those Dragon Boxes were essentially the Japanese discs with Funimation's most recent dub at the time provided as an option.
Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release
Yeah that’s a given. It’s still weird to not use Head Cha La in the other releases for the English dub w Japanese music option.KBABZ wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 4:58 am I'd imagine the reason why the Japanese OP/EDs were used on the US Dragon Box is an acknowledgement that the sets are for fans of the Japanese version of the show. Yes, it's odd and inconsistent how they corrected it on the Dragon Boxes yet left the same track on all other releases with the generic Menza guitar instrumental movie opening when it really shouldn't be there.MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 8:08 amYeah that’s a given. DB collection related goals as of now:
1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)
2.) Collect rest of manga
3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

It's funny in hindsight how i thought this was awesome many moons ago when i was 7/8 as i'm sure a lot of others did then though of course at the time when you're a young kid you don't realize just how awful it actually is much like the dub therein.MasenkoHA wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 8:43 pm Menza’s intro was just incredibly generic it also had no

Dale Kelly’s theme for the tv specials , in edition to being ear rape, is a painful reminder of how hard Funimatiom tried to make DBZ seem so edgy and hardcore. It’s basically a worse version of the Ultimate Uncut opening, which, while really try hard, is at least tolerable sounding for what it is.

Well to be fair it kinda was "hardcore" compared to the animated shows that most western kids were exposed to back then. It was certainly more extreme then anything i'd ever seen up to that point even in its edited form on Toonami.
Its the opposite for me, I didn't pay much attention to the music when I was a kid as I was too busy focusing on the action, but as an adult I actually appreciate it a lot more now.
It’s certainly more violent than most kid shows on tv but I wouldn’t call a show like Dragon Ball Z hardcore.
The U.S replacement music (be it Wasserman, Faulconer, Menza, Kelly, or Johnson) never sounded hardcore just like an attempt to sound hardcore to a grade school/middle school audience. The musical equivalent of a kid with a mohawk and dark clothes and temporary tattoos and a chain necklace who skated and goes to Youth Group

Not as hardcore as actual hardcore music like Biohazard of course, but compared to most other western shows kids were watching around that time, it sounds pretty badass IMO.MasenkoHA wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 8:21 amPlanetnamek wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 10:30 pmSuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 9:01 pm

Looking at this one, I don't think it has so much to with fake grain but more with a lower brightness of the footage and color balance.

It is, the frieza-(I belive) early androids has this color timing. Plus the 30th set has a warmer look compared to the season blurays.Trachta10 wrote: Thu Aug 20, 2020 7:07 pmIs it me or the 30th anniversary looks blue/purple?eledoremassis02 wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 3:41 pmWent back and found the right shotkei17 wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 3:05 pm

Thank you! That pretty much confirmed what I was seeing was just colors reacting to the filter differently.

Re: Funimations 30th anniversary collectible home video release
I know I already said that I don't hate this, but I later showed this to my wife and she said, "I forgot that Dragon Ball Z could actually look this good!" Now I know that there's so much wrong with this statement for a more discerning eye but the footage she's most used to seeing around the Internet is the Orange Bricks. So for her this is a breath of fresh air and she's excited for me to get these sets as we've watched Dragon Ball about 1000x times but we've probably only watched Z together maybe once or twice since 2006.eledoremassis02 wrote: Mon Aug 17, 2020 7:21 pm Just so people who are interested know exactly what they most likely will be getting, I made a small clip using VLC's record mode (not sure how else to do it) but it doesn't look like it took much (if any) hit at the quality

We're a manga household so she is very familiar with the story. We just haven't really been focused on the Z anime in quite a long time with how difficult it is to support a complete official 4:3 release.

I’ll be buying this since finally I can own the series in 4:3!
Of course a few months later I’ll still be on forums and twitter asking why funimation think they can get away with doing mediocre releases

I'll probably buy the new standard releases if Manga UK get them out of goodwill for it being 4:3 and to support my regional distributor. Hoping with how things go leading up to Christmas in my job I'll be able to get some overtime pay before biting the bullet again though.
Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

It says on amazon that it's a limited release steelbook edition, so you'll probably have to wait for a regular release sometime later, againDragon Ball Ireland wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 2:52 am I'll probably buy the new standard releases if Manga UK get them out of goodwill for it being 4:3 and to support my regional distributor. If it gets a standard release after this hopefully it replaces the 16:9 Blu-rays and that's kind of a good thing!Matches Malone wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 8:39 amThey're going to milk this for all its worth, aren't they ?mute_proxy wrote: Thu Aug 27, 2020 3:03 amIt says on amazon that it's a limited release steelbook edition, so you'll probably have to wait for a regular release sometime later, again
