"I learned it from you!" Podcast Phrases
Dunno if this kind of thread is allowed, but I figured I'd try.
The podcast has been going strong for 100 plus episodes now. Aside from its great content, something that always made the podcast episodes for me was how the hosts interact with each other and in particular, some of the phrases they tend to use on a daily basis. I'm sure most of the phrases are just references going way past my head, but (at least for me) this is the first time I've heard most of these phrases used regularly. After so many episodes now, some of the phrases are starting to stick with me. Here's just a few I can think of off the top of my head:
- "I learned it from you!" (from various hosts): This is just an awesome comeback.
- "Whawhaat??" (from Julian): I just find this so funny that I eventually ended up using it myself whenever a double take just wouldn't do it.
- "daily vernacular" (from various hosts): Who knew I'd end up learning new vocab from a DB podcast?
- "redundantly redundant" (from Julian): I know I heard this somewhere before, but the podcast just kinda reinforced this phrase for me.
That's just a couple, but I'm sure there's a crapton (hey, there's another one) more I can bring up.

In no particular order... Shenanigons (My misspelling sounds like some geometric intity...), cool shiz, "daizenshuu ii ekusu poddo kasuto konshu mo kiite kurasatte arigatto gozaimasu..." (... I like randomly talking in Japanese to the air...), "Oh dear...", "For <insert people>, I am (not) VegettoEX...".
... I'm not very original, as you can plainly see.
Although I think the podcast probably taught me the word segway.

Re: "I learned it from you!" Phrases picked up fro
I had a friend in high school who had a shirt that said "Department of Redundancy Department", and Julian's little catchphrase always reminded me of that. It's one of the reasons I like it.DaemonCorps wrote:- "redundantly redundant" (from Julian): I know I heard this somewhere before, but the podcast just kinda reinforced this phrase for me.

My parents moved there while I was finishing up college a few years back, but I've never actually lived there. I don't know where I got that from. I think that's just a Mike-ism.Chuquita wrote:Before the podcast I always assumed the phrase "good deal" was just a local, New Jersey thing; as prior to EX, I've only heard people who live nearby use that.I was shocked when I first heard him say it.
Granted, the podcast takes place in NJ, but EX is from Virginia (I think) right?

While I'm thinking about it, one of my biggest pet-peeves with podcasts is conversations that take place exclusively consisting of in-jokes and references. We had a little bit of that early on while still trying to figure out WTF we were doing, but I really like to think (hope?) there's very little of that going on.
At the same time, we try to slip in stuff all the time to see if anyone recognizes it
. It's one of those techniques where it's normal/funny regardless of whether you know it's a reference, and doesn't feel out of place. Something I picked up primarily from working on fan parodies.
If there's any phrase that I (or anyone else) says all the time that you want more information on, I'm more than happy to try and figure out where that stuff comes from.
That said, any reference I ever make is 90% guaranteed to be from Futurama.

Actually, one of my old dentists used to say that all the time.Chuquita wrote:Before the podcast I always assumed the phrase "good deal" was just a local, New Jersey thing; as prior to EX, I've only heard people who live nearby use that. I was shocked when I first heard him say it.
Anyways... Quotes from the show... Hmm...
Well, of course, theres "Oh dear..." and its different variations. "On my less-than-proverbial right" and "...and a little bit of the entertaining" have also slipped into my vocabulary as well.
Also, "Pokeymans" and "Let's see you shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!" have it me recently as well.

Well let's see
"Hoooooly crap"- Mike when usually receiving big news or trying to psyche up the audience, not really a catchphrase but used fairly often.
"Miiiike"- Jullian usually using an exasperated or apprehensive tone in his voice, I always get a kick out of it.
"I'm just the girl (or some variation of the callback to her being "the girl")- Meri,it originally started in the Broli email if I remember correctly where the quote was "Tell the girl to stop hating on Broli."
I'm sure there are much more but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. For the record I'm such a megadork I listened to all the podcast episodes at least three times.

In that same vein, Mike's super-enthusiastic "SWEET!" reaction to Julian witnessing a knife fight a couple episodes ago has entered my "daily vernacular" as well.NeptuneKai wrote:Well let's see

I've also tended to use the term "stuff" more often whenever I'm at a loss of something to say or am just to lazy to go into details. I guess in that sense, it's like "yadda yadda yadda," but not as wordy.

Oh man I just thought of another one
"We're doing stuff...and things"-Mike or Meri, they phrase this quote in several different ways.
I believe that quote comes from Futurama, from the episode titled "Put Your Head On My Shoulders."

"Stuff and junk and stuff" is a line from This Is Otakudom, which itself took the line from Ranma 1/3 (both fan parodies, the former of which we had slight involvement with).NeptuneKai wrote:We're doing stuff...and things"-Mike or Meri, they phrase this quote in several different ways.

"Definitely check it out." That's a trademark Mike-ism right there.
And I can't believe that the "I learned it from you!" is still getting traction to this day --- and it all started with that anti-drug commercial from the '80s, where the dad asks where his kid got the drug paraphernalia from. ("YOU, all right? I learned it by watching you!") Several years later, the kid from that commercial was on a talk show or game show, and he brought up the fact that he was well-known for that one line.
Another Mike-ism: "... before you hear it into your wonderous ears (from my mi-cro-phone, uh uh uh, yeah...)"
And of course: "Z cards! Desktop patterns! Live chat!"
In-jokes are fun, in moderation. Sometimes the show needs to loosen up a little bit, and the occasional in-jokes are fun to hear.
