A few questions about Raditz
#1) Is Raditz really Goku's brother?
#2) Why wasn't he mentioned in the Bardock special?
#3) How come he is the only blood relative of Goku not voiced by Masako Nozawa?
#4) Am I the only one who likes his Funimation dub voice?

Re: A few questions about Raditz
Yes. He really, truly is, seriously speaking. Goku's good mother must not've given him enough spankings when he was a kid.dragondyle wrote:#1) Is Raditz really Goku's brother?
Nobody knows. But apparently, as mentioned in DBZ's second episode, he was off-planet pirating during the destruction.dragondyle wrote:#2) Why wasn't he mentioned in the Bardock special?
Good question. Maybe because he's the only one who looks nothing like him, never-mind dub Bulma's "Goku, he looks, like you!". Aside from varying different traits, all other male relatives of Goku's look exactly like him. In Tullece's case, he's simply one of the limited amounts of low level Saiyan that shares Kakarrot's traits (I guess means they're distant cousins?). The fact he's voiced by Ms. Nozawa further strengthens the notion that this is how Kakarrot would've ended up had he not gotten that bump on his head and been raised by a kind-yet-wonky old man.dragondyle wrote:#3) How come he is the only blood relative of Goku not voiced by Masako Nozawa?
Not the only one. I like it too.dragondyle wrote:#4) Am I the only one who likes his Funimation dub voice?

Raditz probably takes after their mom. Apparently, it's always the second son who takes after his dad in Bardock's family.

Re: A few questions about Raditz
Not sure. Maybe because he was grown and independent. Also, Bardock had visions of Freeza's battle with Goku. Raditz wasn't that significant. You'd think his sons coming to blows might have been a worthy vision though. Then again, do they say he's Bardock's? Is it possible he's a half brother with a different father?dragondyle wrote:Why wasn't he mentioned in the Bardock special?
Ya know, one thing not many dub fans know I've noticed. When Freeza regards Gohan in the dub he is puzzled that he can't figure out where the kid came from. However, in the subs he actually does mention that the kid kinda resembles Raditz, and even surmises that he may be Raditz's kid (slightly off, but always thought it was a good guess). He doesn't seem to relate Raditz to Bardock at all though (though he does for Goku, obviously).
Nope. Justin Cook rocks. I just wish he didn't have to follow that lame script from the initial dub.Am I the only one who likes his Funimation dub voice?
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

You know, I haven't really thought of it that way.Onikage725 wrote: Then again, do they say he's Bardock's? Is it possible he's a half brother with a different father?
True. I agree. But he did really nail some of his lines though and I think Justin Cook is one of Funimation's best actors.Onikage725 wrote: Nope. Justin Cook rocks. I just wish he didn't have to follow that lame script from the initial dub.

Are you sure? I seem to remember that he says "You look just like your father" (I hate being away from my manga; I can never check anything). Anyway, every guidebook ever identifies him simply as "Goku's older brother" with no caveats, and all of the family trees always have him as Burdock's child.Chibi Mystic Gohan wrote:Raditz says Goku looks like their father, I believe. So Burdock is his dad.

In that specific quote, he's vague in the Japanese text. (For those who can't read Japanese, he's literally saying "You look like father." There is no pronoun whatsoever (be it "your" father, "our" father, "my" father, etc.))
I would assume Toriyama had him be vague because Raditz doesn't reveal the fact that he's Goku's brother until the next chapter; saying "You look just like our father" would kind of spoil that.
However, this next line is straight to the point: "Even our father and mother [were destroyed]."

Are you talking about Raditz in the first DBZ TV Special? No, you didn't. He's not there.vicdmx wrote:I think I saw him in the ending credits at the end of the movie.
Even over top "Hikari no Tabi", the scenes shown in the upper-left go straight from Goku using the Chou-Kamehameha on Ma Junior to Goku nailing Nappa in the gut.

Nah. He showed up again in some Freeza arc filler material where Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz are dealing with Freeza and talking about some rebellion and stuffage. Think it's circa episode 100.Raki wrote:Being as Toriyama forgot about many of his characters, maybe Toei forgot about Raditz.

Re: A few questions about Raditz
No, Kakarrot and Raditz are full-blooded brothers. For one, in the Japanese version of episode 2, I believe Simmons' subs specifically have Raditz say "You look exactly like Father". Further more, when he's describing Planet Vegeta, "our mother and father were both killed along with everyone else". It's nifty to have dialogue exchanges in the Ps2 games also, where it's bluntly acknowledged, such as in Budokai 3 after Raditz defeats Bardock in a duel, "Father...!"Onikage725 wrote:Is it possible he's a half brother with a different father?
For what it's worth, Raditz does have his father's skin tone and scouter color. In comparison to Bra, whom looks nothing like Vegeta ;p
