Vegeta: Good or Bad?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Um I don't know where you see that but usually people would much rather have the other Z warriors having the spotlight. Which is why Gohan and Gotenks are stronger than him for example. Really though he's the main hero what do you expect? Like Kendamu said you saying Goku is overrated is like saying Superman is overrated in his own comic.

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

Vegeta qualifies as pissed more than angsty. He doesn't go off and cry about things, he just punches someone's face in.
Yeah but isn't that really the reason we like him so much!?
I can hardly see Vegeta wanting to resolve an issue by sitting around a table drinking coffee.

As for looking like a troll... I'm sorry but are we looking at the same Saiyan!

I know he is the main hero and all but atleast give Vegeta a chance to kill a important villain.

Lawl Vegeta does look like a troll doll. I'd think Vegeta would be a very ugly man in real life, despite what all the Yaoi fan girls say.

All of those things I said about Veg being pissy and stubborn are the reasons I like him ^^ Sorry if that didn't come across in the first post.

And I just don't find Vegeta attractive at all. I've seen exactly one picture of him that looked so (a really old B-chan one where he’s dressed like a secretary or something) in the least. It could just be a matter of taste though, as Pic's pretty much my definition of gorgeous. That's a topic I could spend a few weeks talking about.

Well, in the dub there have been a few comments made about Vegeta being ugly. But then again, he looks exactly like Goku, Trunks and Yamcha, and those guys have been said to be handsome. :?

Well, there is a manga quote where Vegeta uses the term "wife" in reference to Bulma (to Gokuu: "How dare you use another man's wife!"), so I tend to take that as Toriyama-sensei intending for them to have gotten married,. He could have easily used another term such as "woman" to refer to her, but the fact that he used the word "wife" is pretty significant, I'd say. Whether they legally could or not is another issue (he's an alien :P ), but they at least consider themselves to be married.

As for Vegeta's transformation from bad guy to good guy, I think Trunks being killed by Cell was a major turning point. It was the first time he showed any emotion for another person (that we were shown). He obviously settled down a lot after that point, seeing as how he stuck around Capsule Corp. and helped raise Trunks. Obviously, he had a bit of a lapse when he decided to use the Majin power to try to beat Gokuu, but we can just call that a mid-life crisis  Even in that state, though, he decided to sacrifice himself to save his family (and the planet). After he comes back to life again and is trying to help Gokuu defeat Kid Buu, it's interesting to compare his actions at that time to when he first appeared. In the Saiyan saga, Vegeta wanted to use the Dragonballs to wish for eternal life so he could rule the universe with an iron fist. In the Buu saga, he uses the Dragonballs to revive everyone on Earth to help save the universe from destruction. Quite a turnaround :)

I think that "wife" is the most common word to describe Bulma's status. After all, they live togetther for 10 years and thay had a child. But I really can"t picture Vegeta getting married.

Don't see why Vegeta would have a problem with Bulma pretty much saying "We're together now, I'm doing the paperwork," and would probably just respond, "hmmph. Whatever." If Bulma and Vegeta ever did get technically married, with a ceremony and all, then it was all Bulma's idea, and Vegeta probably didn't have a choice.

He probably didn't come either, for some reason I can only imagine Vegeta perhaps standing at the door watching with a bored expression

Capsule-Corp Priest Robot: "Do you Vegeta take Bulma to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

Vegeta: "Hmph" *walks out*

Bulma: "That means yes!"

Capsule-Corp Priest Robot: "Then by the power vested in me by my nuclear power cells, I pronounce you man and wife"

I always imagined it to be a blackmail, well in sorts.
Bulma perhaps threatening never to fix the gravity room again, or promising to destroy his training armour so he can wear nothing but pink 'Badman' shirts.

He does seem quite... how does one say protective, after he discovers Goku and Gohan promised her to the wrinkley old Kai!

Agreed with Conan's assessment. Evil bastard all the way until Mirai Trunks got killed.

One bit I find interesting: in the Buu saga, he seems as protective of Gohan and Goten as he does of Trunks. "You're the bastard that killed Gohan," "get the boys out of here," "how could you let our sons die," etc.

Wait, Future Trunks is killed? Spoiler! ;-)

(Weird to spoil a show that's well over 15 years old....)

Oddly enough, I think Meri mentioned it offhand on a Podcast episode... Vegeta seems to fit the "tsun-dere" character profile perfectly. He starts out being all mean and angry and stuff, and eventually he warms over and mellows out, even though he still maintains that bitter, entitled aura about himself throughout much of the series.

I really think Vegeta's character development over the series would make for an excellent Podcast topic. I know they discussed Gohan's character development a while back on a Podcast episode. Vegeta undergoes some significant character development, as early as the Freeza saga. He eventually has Goku's respect, and vice-versa. I mean, Goku and Vegeta may have wanted to kill each other in Season 1, but by the end of the Dragon Ball Z, they admire each other mutually. (Especially when you have Vegeta checking out full-on naked Goku behind a tree in that later episode!)

What do you think, Mike/Meri/Julian? Vegeta's character development a topic for a future episode? :)

That's such an awesome idea!
It would make a really good podcast, and would have so much to explain and go through!

The Saiyan prince has certainly got to be one of the most complex characters of the series! ^_^ Oooh I'm getting excited thinking about it

I see your point about Vegeta being protective of Gohan, after re-watching the episode; I can clearly notice you're point. It's definately a contrast from the episode after they get transported from Namek :o

Vegeta even results in appologising to Son Gohan after he thoughtlessly attacked Cell after his son was killed. Thus causing Gohan to rescue him, recieving some painful injuries.
This shows he has some respect for the son of Kakkorot!

I wouldn't exactly say he is that complex to be honest, he's pretty cliche'd now.

Vegeta started out with that same superiority complex he bears later on (along with arrogant exploits), brushing off any competition and skating through the universe killing at a whim. Withal, as the series went on, hints of subtle appreciation for Goku (despite the overabundant rivalry that killed his character in my view), fervid emotions, and other things began to appear. Once he was run through the gut by Freeza, the door was opened to what was but a mere thought up until then. This is later furthered when he fixes eyes on his own son's death. Doing this, he changed tremendously as a person. He felt pain of loss. A loss of a close one.

He goes onto recollect this as he allows Bobbodi to take hold of him, claiming to have sold "his soul". Seeing that, returning to his old Saiyan Saga Arc self did not make him stronger but weaker. And inadvertently, throughout the series, he's been shown to have only had the best brought out of him not by hunting others for fun but by his association with Goku, Goku's help, and the sheer presence of both Vegeta and Son Goku helping to fuel the competition and incentive of everyone.

So, all in all, I would not say he's straight out "evil" (even though he holds fast to having a "pure evil heart"), but that he finds another side of himself as the series progresses, and that is what changes him.
