Those people? Except for a rare few that I am friends with, the majority are sloppy, pretentious nerds who are barely able to socialize outside of their own nerd group. They call Dragonball crap. I call them socially awkward.

Most of the time I try as hard as possible to not associate with those types around here. Mainly, though, that's because a couple of them smell, one has a mullet and runs around with his arms behind him like he's Naruto, and the other one stares at me all the time like she's trying to use Mind Control on me. To top it all off they have horrible Japanese and I can't understand what they're trying to say.

lol Does anyone really care if someone doesn't like you because you like DBZ? Yes? No? Show of hands? Look, the way I see it, Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and hell even Dragon Ball GT, are my favorite animes of all time. It is epic. I don't even like anime. I am a fan of Cowboy Bebop, the Street Fighter movies, and the Fatal Fury movies. That is it. Case closed. Now if some little nerd were to get into my face and start talking down DBZ for me, I would laugh at him, I would probably make fun of him, and I would tell him that I don't care what the hell he thinks simply because most other anime is boring, all of them are either in space all the time, or walking through forests all the time. And yet, DBZ was the biggest thing to hit the US in its time, and had it not been for the popularity of DBZ, a lot of other anime would never have made its way across the waters, and quite frankly, everyone in my age group (20) has liked, or still likes DBZ. When I was in school, DBZ was the biggest thing. Everyone talked about it, people printed out pictures of it, summaries of what would happen. The only people that I've met that don't like DBZ are people who are like 15 or 16 now (as compared to me being 20), in which case I don't give a crap what they think and they wouldn't think of telling me DBZ is crap anyways. Oh and little kids. But I just laugh because they like Yu-Gi-Oh...enough said.

It all boils down to the fact that I'm the type of person that doesn't care what people think. I wear what I want to wear, I speak the way I want to speak, I listen to the music I want to listen to. Hey, if I like a Britney Spears song, I will blast it in my car with the windows open, I don't care. One day I can wear a hoodie, the next I can wear a $250 expensive shirt. I do what I want to do and am not ashamed of what I like and what I don't like.

You are kind of being a hypocrit if you are going to make fun of him.

I don't walk walk around making fun of them. I think they can like what they want to. But if some snob-nosed little geek gets in my face and starts rambling about how DBZ sucks, I'm going to put them in their place.

Totally agree, but I was more on the lines of you asking what they watch and then making fun of that.

Look. I have my opinions and others have their own. Some like Inuyasha, right? I hate that show. But I don't think lowly of a person who likes it. This Thread is almost implying that someone is going to think lowly of you just because you like DBZ. Well if that were the case, I'd probably sink down to their level just to stick it to them. I can gladly point out why DBZ is better than any other anime.

And this is exactly why I'm saying it is hypocritical.

I said I'd sink down to their level, but again, the implication is that they'd start it off. I would never start it off. I wouldn't look down at them just because they like something. I'll just tell them that what they like is crap (as a way of defending DBZ) and they might think that's why I look down at them, but the truth is I'd look down at them because of other reasons, one of them being poking their ass into what I like.

It's tough to explain.

A lot of the friends I have in my cosplay circles for the most part aren't big on DB and many of them criticize aspects of it. They know I'm a big fan though and have never judged me for that or said I was less of a fan or something. Honestly I could never see them doing that. Though funnily enough, I met a recent newcomer to our group a few weeks ago and found out by chance conversation we were having about Canadian voice actors that he was a DBZ fan. I jumped up and randomly hugged him and he was all, "Alright man! DBZ fans for life!" It was a funny and cool little moment and my other friends just shook their heads like, "You guys are nuts." Though they freely admit they're nuts in ways too. XD

Just wanted to make a point about Evangelion. I've been seeing quite a few anime fans bashing that lately as well. They label it overrated and overly angsty philosophical BS. Heck many also say the characters are one-dimensional. I think it's a new trend that EVA has become a series to hate on just for the sake of looking cool.

... Probably because it's popular among the older fanbase? (Older as in when they got into anime, age aside...)?
Now I want to compare the Anime/manga community to the nonconormist-goth stereotype... (... as portrayed in South Park: You got F'd in the A, where the group is formed around nonconformity... and only one of the goth kids actually decides not to conform to the rest of the nonconformist group...).

Conformity through a desire to bash conformity.
Which it's entirely possible this thread could turn into.

(I always seem to feel the need to end my posts with a line addressing something about said post that leaves me uneasy. Usually it's a vague "This post sucks..." or something to that effect. ... I can't think of anything specific for this one other than my desciption sucks and I should delete that whole paragraph. ... and I should just shut up, because no one would care otherwise... :? dies of confusion* )

When I started watching Dragonball again in 2000, there were only one or two people who i knew also watched and we were big fans, in one case we stopped playing video games to watch a re-run of an episode that I was taking anyway. Later on I really didn't have any friends who watched Dragonball, or any anime for that matter, but the same was true for Pro-Wrestling which has a worst stigma than any anime could possibly have.

If I brought up my love of Dragonball with anyone who knew of it, whether they were also a fan or not, the firsts things they point out are the most obvious flaws of the anime. You know, the long periods of staring, the long screams, the grunts, and so forth. No one I've encountered has done this in a condensating manner, so I would acknowledge these problem areas and just say that over-all it's a pretty decent program. And telling them that Dragonball is one of those series where you may have to watch quite a few episodes to really get it.

After several years on here, if someone doesn't think I'm cool, there's very little I can do to change that. No, I simply don't like it.

I apologize Rocketman if you think I was directing that at you. I wasn't and actually wasn't even aware of your opinion about the series. I was basically pointing out how anime fandom is like any other subculture in that it has trends and "group-mentality" thinking too. So to really care what other fans think is pointless in the end.
