This very question is targeted at Z Goku. Z Goku is the one who had Goten and arguably Gohan. Saying that Goku doesn't have it in him to get Chi-Chi pregnant the good ol'-fashioned way is a comment on Z Goku, or at ending of DB Goku--both of which aren't clueless simpletons. My point was that people are projecting this regressed Goku onto the Goku from Z.

Of course, the other thing is that part of the whole joke of Goku being a father was the subtext that this clueless simpleton who once had to pat people on the crotch to figure out they're girls now had sex and had a kid. That it seemingly wouldn't make sense from Goku is part of the whole conceit.

It's not 'contemporary gender ideology'. But Super doesn't wipe out Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Goku was silly in those portions of the story, but he wasn't a complete idiot. Yeah, I'm pretty sure Chi-Chi explained it to him. It's unreasonable to assume that he just wouldn't understand and happily do it.

Again, Goku was silly, but he was more than capable of understanding the concept if it was laid out to him. I'd even argue that Super Goku wouldn't be incapable of understanding the concept if it was explained to him.

My head canon is that they have a fight with each other as foreplay and the actual sex happens after that and is more of an afterthought on Goku's part (He lets Chi-Chi have her way with him while he's mostly basking in the afterglow of a fun fight).

It would explain how Goku can have kids with Chi-Chi despite supposedly having never kissed her- Their foreplay is fighting each other, not kissing, petting, etc.

It sounds weird, but it makes sense considering they're both weird people.
