So, like, Roshi

Post by BeaBumby » Thu Jul 14, 2022 3:55 pm

What do you think about him?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's kind of like a "like him or hate him" character, for fairly obvious reasons.

I do like his role in early Dragon Ball, I like what he does for his students, and his sacrifice in the Piccolo saga.

Obviously, I don't like the pervert stuff, don't really think anybody does

I don't think his perverted antics are that funny especially with Toei's exaggeration of it, but apparently this really sales with the Japanese audience since this kind of character pops up a lot in anime/manga.

Roshi is a great character otherwise. He served as a father figure to Goku and Krillin, and he laid the groundwork for the Z-Warriors.

His comeback while forced is nice to see.

Goku didn't die in GT. The show sucked him off so much, it was impossible to keep him in the world of the living, so he ascended beyond mortality.

I always side eye the people who say "Now my kids/today's kids can experience what I did as a child!" Nigga, who gives a fuck about your childhood? You're an adult now and it was at least 15 years ago. Let the kids have their own experience instead of picking at a corpse.

Amazing character.

His mini arc in the tournament of power in dragon ball super was actually really enjoyable too. It actually sort of saved the show from being terrible. Along with some moments from Android 17.

I like him when he's not being gross.

I’ve always been kinda indifferent to him
I like him best when he’s a badass wise old martial artist who sometimes gives good advice when it’s needed

In other words I like him best when he’s serious not being a perverted gag character for the sake of forced comic relief

Never have been a fan of the perverted old man type of character in the first place but when used sparingly they can SOMETIMES be pretty funny depending on the joke or situation

But when they are legit pedos preying on minor girls like Bulma who was only 16 in Dragonball that’s where I draw the line as the “this guy should be locked up” type of character “and why is everyone just fine with being friends with this pervert”

Jiraiya’s perverse nature for instance is used much more sparingly than Roshi’s as he seems to have more of a life besides sitting around and looking at porn magazines all day every day

Whereas with Roshi it’s basically his entire character once he retires from fighting especially in Z and becoming even worse in Super

Heck it’s such a running joke in the series that he’s addicted to porn and beautiful women’s bodies that they finally addressed it in Super giving him a much needed intervention which I say it’s about darn time !

There are times that as a woman myself that I despise him for seeing beautiful women only for their bodies which is objectifying them not seeing them as people but as objects to lust after

The moment I hated him the most for this was probably when he groped 18 seeing a perfect opportunity to do so and 18 kinda just let him do it for a while

Honestly I wanted her to punch him out of the airplane instead of just cracking his neck
18 shouldn’t have to be subjected to his perverse nature she’s too badass for that
Future 18 would have legit just killed him if he pulled anything like that

He’s supposed to be a goofy subversion of the wise old sage archetype. He’s a skilled martial artist and mentor who is capable of giving good advice, but he’s also an extremely horny old man who lives in a fairly modern house that just happens to be on an island in the middle of nowhere. The problem is that his perverted side tends to be treated as his defining characteristic.

Weirdly enough, I’d say that DBE actually does a decent job of staying true to the character, without going overboard.

Yep exactly what I was saying too in my post
He basically became a stereotypical perverted gag character whose whole personality just revolves around being constantly horny
I miss when he actually used to be badass like in the World’s Strongest for example that was him at his utmost prime in Z

Lol really? That must be the only thing they actually did right about that movie then 😅
Haven’t seen it yet in it’s entirety and don’t plan on it any time soon except maybe for the laughs one day

I love him, he is my third favorite DB character, the duality of his comedic "old perv sage who makes him up to be cooler than what he actually is" side and his wiser, powerful and badass "Jackie Chun" persona is always a great sight, he is probably among the most influential characters, he laid the groundwork for Goku's entire philosophy of martial arts, and he has many nuances to his character.

Another good thing about him is that he was able to actually retire from a fighting role, giving his character closure so it doesn't really diminish him that he becomes a background character from there on who occasionally gets a joke or a serious "shit got real" moment as a spectator (even tho sometimes the latter was used to an absurd degree, like when he comments on Goku making Frieza go 100% on Namek in spite of the fact that he shouldn't even know about anything that's happening on Namek, he shouldn't even know Frieza's name lol).

This is a stark contrast to the rest of the supporting cast who never got a proper sendoff yet their roles progressively diminished to the point they were just as irrelevant as Roshi.

His return to an active fighting role in DBS was unneeded, but it was really well done, both in the anime and the manga, however, i would still prefer if they gave Tenshinhan and Yamcha a proper focus instead, or at the very least include Gotenks in the tournament (it would have been fun seeing Gotenks fight alongside Gohan, Frieza, etc.) having Roshi get a big comeback sort of undermines the themes of the 22nd Budokai arc on the whole generational aspect.

Aside from that time his nosebleed was weaponized to hit that invisible man in Baba's tournament, the "haha he's a pervert" jokes done around him are some of the most boring jokes in DB for me.

Then again, jokes where the punchline is just the character being horny are unfunny for me in general...

When he's not being a perverte then there's more more stuff going on for him, and I did find his role as Jackie Chun to be kinda interesting, and in Super, his ToP episode is the best one for me, which kinda annoys me 'cause I don't really like Roshi lol.

So yeah, without the perverted stuff, he'd be okay, with it he's just meh 'cause I find the jokes to be mostly boring.

Ah yeah Roshi is like we call it in Mexico "una piedrita en el zapato" or "a little stone inside the shoe" it means you can still walk with it, but it will be uncomfortable AF

But when they are legit pedos preying on minor girls like Bulma who was only 16 in Dragonball that’s where I draw the line as the “this guy should be locked up” type of character “and why is everyone just fine with being friends with this pervert”
I understand the gag, the old man perverted for younger women is popular in my country too (viejo rabo verde), it is mainly funny considering the fact that men of an old age are not capable to perform sexual tasks efficiently anymore, in other words (and I quote the Joker) they resemble a dog chasing a car, even if they would cath it one day, they would not know what to do with it xD
So I think that is why it is funny.

I can see how it is not alright in these times to joke about it...

Maybe they will have to reboot DB because of Roshi alone  probably Ulong too.

I did not know Roshi had an intervention in DB super about it cause I haven't watched DBS, that is interesting.

I have yet to watch the Tournament Arc in Super too but I heard that there’s an episode sometime before it where Roshi’s addiction to lust is finally addressed and everyone tries to help him overcome it to train for the tournament as I guess that they volunteered him to participate probably bc of the team count needed as it is a battle royal type of tournament so hence the intervention to get him temporarily out of retirement

Roshi is a great character provided you ignore all the problematic sexual predator jokes that are dismissed by the series as that rascally old man! He'll never learn! Lol. The tournament half of the 21st Tenkaichi Budokai arc all of the Tenshinhan and Daimao arc, and his spotlight episode during the Tournament of Power are the best showcasing of how great the character actually is.
