Behind-The-Scenes Video of Dragon Ball French Dub in 1988

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Mon Jul 18, 2022 5:03 pm

To anybody else who thought this might be interesting, I found a neat little video today. It actually appears to be a Japanese TV show, but it's filming and interviewing the French dub cast of Dragon Ball in action in the year 1988. Since they dub using the rhythmo-band method, the cast is able to record as a group. I can't pretend I know everything they're saying, but it's still a fun watch!
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

My childhood :) So Japan was interested how other countries dub their shows? Wonder how that reporter would react to Harmony Gold dub?

I don't wanna stray too far from Dragon Ball-related topics as per the forum rules, but to answer your question as best I can, I don't know how that reporter would react to the Harmony Gold dub...but here's how this Japanese reporter covered 4Kids Entertainment.

Lol that has nothing to do with rhythmoband, this is how dub was done still 30 years ago. And it was a limitation not a privilege.

There was a sole track and if one person screwed up everyone would have to retake the whole scene from scratch. It would make the work harder and longer.
But people were still "able" to record as a group with just one microphone, one set of sheets, crowding in front of it, moving around/bending down according to who’s next inside of what would be usually a small booth, (a wide space as the one in that video is rare) and obviously the ones who mess up weren't called again lol.
