What's interesting is as best I can tell the Duel Monsters anime didn't start airing in Japan until April 2000 so either Funimation was trying to license the Toei tv series or they knew about the Duel Monsters anime going into production before it actually aired in Japan. Which I guess is possible? That seemed to be how it worked with Saban getting Digimon out in the US only 6 months after fuji tv started airing it in Japan.

Though of course, 4Kids were ultimately the ones to get their hands on it about a year and a half later in late 2000/early 2001 after DM was already out. Given they were still riding the MASSIVE success that the Pokemon craze had brought and thus were the ones who licensed it instead of FUNi.

Yep, April 2000. By the time that thread was posted in November '99, Duel Monsters had almost definitely already been announced. Most anime tend to be publicly announced at minimum close to a year before they actually air.

That definitely makes more sense than them dubbing a 27 episode anime

The creator's passing is sad news. Yu-gi-oh had arguably as much influence on my childhood as Dragon Ball. Both still greatly influence me to this day.

Based on the hair and other character designs, I can definitely see the DB influence on YGO. I get the feeling that Takahashi-san was influenced by a great many things due to the eclecticism of his designs. Duel Monsters incorporates many genres of fiction, not just fantasy or sci-fi or even just western or eastern.

Funimation also distributed the short-lived uncut Yu-Gi-Oh DVDs, although 4Kids did the actual dubbing and didn't like sharing profits with a middle man. Its a shame that dub was never completed, as I would have liked to watch all of Yu-Gi-Oh that way. I also couldn't imagine watching Yu-Gi-Oh with anything other than the 4Kids cast, as I'm not used to all the dub switches as I am with Dragon Ball. I know the Singapore dub exists, but I haven't been impressed with the clips I've seen.

It’s a bit of a shame that the franchise eventually just became little more than an excuse to promote the card game.

It never really did, most of the duels in the franchise have a reason behind them, characters have their motivations, and there is plenty to analyze. It's not like an episode starts with two randoms dueling each other for no reason.

After Takahashi ended his original manga, Konami started commissioning sequel series with original plots ("GX" and on) so they could still have an anime promoting the card game on TV. They were made purely for that purpose, acting like they weren't is like trying to pretend the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime isn't made to promote the arcade game.

Damn this really sucks, Yu-Gi-Oh was a big part of my childhood whether it was watching the show on Kids WB, playing the games on GBA and DS or playing the actual card game with my classmates in Junior high and high school(though I kind of fell off from playing the game once Synchros got introduced).

Most Shonen mangaka are fans of the DragonBall franchise. Its widely seen as the most "archetypal" Shonen series in Japan, so it's no surprise that Kazuki Takahashi (R.I.P.) was a fan too.

I saw a tour of his studio once where he had two Shikishi prominently displayed one by Toriyama and another by Yoshio Sawai of Bobobo fame. There's a couple Bobobo and Saint Seiya references in the manga as well but I don't think anything as explicit as those two exist for DB.
