Vegeta, like the rest at the beginning of Season 3, were very disappointing. However, I actually cringed the worst over Kuririn.Magica wrote:When Season 3 first came out on TV. The one thing I enjoy most about the original Japanese versus the FUNimation dub is that the soundtrack I feel is much better. I noticed it when I watched the original DBZ Movie 12, and I REALLY noticed it when I started watching DBGT online and compared it to the VHS tapes I had of DBGT. (Just so you guys know, the soundtrack for DBGT was absolutely atrocious in the American dub.)NeptuneKai wrote:Sophos wrote:My apologies, I'm very bad with names. Kuririn was the first voice I got used to when I bought my Ginyu VHS tapes. Then it was Ginyu, and the rest of the Tokusentai. Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta took me quite awhile, almost the whole volume.Kendamu wrote:Vegeta, like the rest at the beginning of Season 3, were very disappointing. I'm still a fogey that prefers the Canadian cast over the Texas cast, but I'm not going to be a dick just for the sake of being a dick. Once the current "Kuririn voice" started to develop more into what you hear today, I started liking it more.djkalteraphine wrote:Kuririn was the first voice I got used to when I bought my Ginyu VHS tapes. Personally, I remember getting used to Gohan's voice the fastest.
I'm still disappointed that the Canadian DBZ dub's best projects only consist of the first three DBZ movies, though. I would've liked them to at least gotten far enough that I would've been able to hear Drummond's Vegeta with Japanese BGM.
Oh, and I'm also disappointed because I don't have a Japanese PlayStation or PlayStation 2. This means I can't play the best DBZ game in the history of ever.

Ah, I got into it with the Canadian cast (obviously), and then started watching the Japanese version. In fact, with the exception of the first two "seasons", and some of "season" three, I saw everything in Japanese first. So, when the Texas cast took over, I wasn't new to the concept of different voices for the characters I loved. Because of this, I don't really prefer one cast over any other; Stephanie Nadolny is my favorite Goku, Ryo Horikawa is my favorite Vegeta, and Scott McNeil is my favorite Piccolo, for example.Kendamu wrote:I'm still a fogey that prefers the Canadian cast over the Texas cast, but I'm not going to be a dick just for the sake of being a dick. That being said, my favorite version is the Japanese. But that's being of script, not cast. I think both Canadian and Texas casts have their great voices, their okay ones, and their duds.
I think them dropping the ball on Gohan after Cell is my biggest disappointment. It's so bothersome that even though I've been a fan of Dragonball for 13 years, and I've never completely watched the Majin Buu arc or any of GT.
The story just kind of ends with the Cell games for me. Goku dies, passes on the torch to his son, it's perfect ending.

and the whole "Earth Faries are boring maybe I should just give up drawing them completly and spend more time on the saiyans" thing pisses me off too.

I would've probably gotten used to the Texas cast a whole lot faster had they started out sounding a little more similar to how they sound today.djkalteraphine wrote:Ah, I got into it with the Canadian cast (obviously), and then started watching the Japanese version. What I mean by that is that Sabat started out trying to impersonate Drummond and then it eventually kind of became its own thing over the years with very little Drummond influence. If the voices were to have started out more as their own interpretations and less like imitations, I would've seen the new cast as "another version" a lot sooner and accepted that cast a lot quicker.
Nowadays, with the exception of a few voices, the Texas cast is alright. They're not the Canadian cast that I like better, they're definitely not the Japanese cast that I like best, but I'm not gonna be a douche and put them in the same category as the Final Bout cast (for the American release, obviously). Hell, I can even imagine the Texas cast saying the lines from the VIZ manga while I read it and be satisfied.
Its the script that I'm disappointed with. Well, Dragonball through the end of Season 2 of Dragonball Z is pretty good, but after that we start getting into a lot of "pop goes the weasel" stuff.

I found the training with King Kai and the journey along Snake Way quite dissapointing.
It was quite comedic I give Akira that, however it started to drag along when Goku was chasing Bubbles and then Gregory with the huge hammer.
I think if we actually saw him being trained a little more, and also saw how he learned his new techniques I.E the spirit bomb, it would have made those few episodes REALLY great!
I also thought the movie featuring Janemba was a bit of a let down

With the canon series, I was always disappointed with the lack of creativity in the series past the Freeza arc. What I felt when I watched or read the series pre Cell arc, it was total and pure randomness, with a constant sense of adventure, giving you the sense that you never knew what Toriyama was going to throw at you next.
The Cell arc failed miserably at this. Not so much the plot, but the Cell arc itself was essentially a recycled idea. Androids had already been a major part in the series during the Red Ribbon arc, the Super Saiyan was nothing more than modified, and even Cell himself was simply a composite of all the series' memorable villians. The only original concept that came out of the Cell arc was the idea that Goku felt that he had achieved everything that he wanted to, and that there would need to be a replacement, and the first and only choice was obviously Gohan.
Then the Boo arc rolls around, which was a disaster. The entire arc was nothing more than a huge power display, with an unoriginal plot and no adventure. Even the first stage of Super Saiyan was essentially made into a joke when Goten and Trunks were able to use it. Gohan, again, was the choice as the sucessor, but Toriyama allowed himself to succomb to the demands of the fans, and essentially let the fans write the story. This is why the series fell apart after the Freeza arc.
Also there's the fact that the actual Dragon Balls serve almost no purpose past the Freeza arc, which makes the title "Dragon Ball" seem a bit inappropriate for the later series.
Movies 4-13 I was disappointed with. The first three (although they presented major plotholes) were at least half way decent because there were long, strung out fights. The fights in the later movies were terrible. With a single hit, some of the characters were out.
The TV specials weren't too bad. I actually liked Burdock one.

I finally bought a gamecube. To bad they don't make any games for it now.
Well, he didn't seem to want to keep writing it after about the Frieza arc, so can we really blame him? It should come as no surprise that the canon series began to become so mechanical, and losing the organic flavor it had earlier on.DemonKingPiccolo wrote:With the canon series, I was always disappointed with the lack of creativity in the series past the Freeza arc. There were a few dissapointments for me in dragonball.
The Entire Boo arc. The final fight with Kid Boo was great, but the ending wasn't. I was hyped up for Goku letting the next generation take over, but that didn't happen.
And Dragonball GT....mainly the Cell and Furiza/Freeza/Freeza fight. It sucked, a lot.
