Bah, you speak as if Chris Sabat is to blame. :P (By the way, that narration voice of his...I really don't detect any of his Vegeta in it)
That's not what I meant. :D
I just meant that there's a major difference in the feeling of whatDragonball Z is if you look at the Japanese ads compared to the American ads and I just like the feeling of the Japanese ads better. I think they represent my interpretation of Dragonball as a whole a lot more than the American ones do.

I'm blaming the marketing department more than the people who are in the ads.
As for interpertation...the sad fact is 'Dragonball = DBZ = GT' to American casuals and the stigma will stay until those in power wish to change how they market. American action films are all advertized as being bad*** or whatever. The happier tone of the original just is not what they want to use to advertize. Most people only remember DB for the fighting not as 'fine art' like we geeks do.
I would like to believe that the casual Dragonball fan who watched it on TV for several years and then moved on with life remembers that Dragonball was different than Dragonball Z. I mean, FUNi even went to the effort of coming out with English versions of the opening and ending themes. So, while I don't expect them to think of it as 'fine art' I would hope that they remembered Dragonball not being very much like Dragonball Z.

The only reason its on my mind so much, though, is because I really don't care if FOX ruins Dragonball Z. The average American mindset of Dragonball Z is something that's currently incurably different than the Japanese outlook. There's no point in even hoping for some type of change. But, FUNi managed to do Dragonball pretty decently and I don't see why FOX seems to be going out of their way to not do the same.
'Sides, I like the orange brick commercials. :P
I enjoy the background music to the Orange Brick commercials because it kinda reminds me of an updated Rock the Dragon, which is nostalgic to my dub-only introduction to Dragonball Z. Kind of a guilty pleasure and if FUNi was smart, they would've used that tune as the dub opening for Dragonball Z instead of that other thing they're playing since they're going for that "HARDCORE POOP COLA FESTIVAL OF SKULL SMASHING BRAWNDO MADNESS!" feel with Dragonball Z.

But, still, I don't enjoy them nearly as much as something featuring Nozawa and Cha-La Head Cha-La.

Oh? So then, two people growing up under the same conditions will have the exact same personality?
No. But if two people grow up with vastly different experiences, they most certainly will not be the same, or even similar.
Xyex wrote: This goes back to my inner city example. If a person is just the sum of their experiences than everyone in the inner city is a gang member. :P
Not really. Everyone in the inner city has a different experience. Some are driven to leave, some are driven to help it, others aren't driven to do anything and simply accept it -- just like with anything, it's a gamble. But a person is still the sum of their experiences, as their innate personality has to have things to react to in order to develop. It won't simply spring into a certain place because they hit a certain age - or in your argument, "Can they be similar enough that there's really no difference and, thus, appear the same from the outside?" No, never. Everyone is different, and significantly enough that there are no two people who are "really no difference" between one another.

So in closing:
The human brain is far more complex than you give it credit for.
:D

A persons experiences affect that person based on who they are to begin with. Yes experiences effect who people are, but even the same experiences effect different people differently.

But as such, a person is still the sum of their experience. I.E., a person's innate personality shapes around their experiences, making them the sum of them.

A person is a sum of all of their parts. A person=experiences, isn't really fact; though it is a huuuuuge part of it.

If you and I go to a baking class being taught the same thing, we share the same experience theoretically, but we may gather a different amount of learning from it or react to it differently.

Are the pictures that we've been looking at official 20th Century Fox releases? Does Fox have anything up on their official sites?

Also, from those pictures that we have seen, I don't get the same "blank, expressionless" vibe that poeple have been commenting on. Some of the pictures look like he's trying to hold some sort of energy ball in his palm or something and being intrigued by it. Kinda like when Goku first saw the Kamehameha and tried to make his own.

As for the "we're gettting a Dub-Z" movie, the producers and a few of the stars are from Asia and if they are truly fans would they know that the american dub is not the true representation of the series?

Maybe, but isn't FOX footing the bill? They probably have more say than anyone else. I just hope that if you're right, and the people making this movie are fans and want to make a good adaption, that the suits footing the bill were able to be convinced that Dragonball doesn't need to be Dub-Z to be successful.

As some food for thought concerning the whole "time spent in the city/school" thing, I'd like to bring up my apparently previously unnoticed post...
SSj Kaboom wrote:
Xyex wrote:I repeat, it has NEVER been said that Goku grew up in the city. It as ONLY been said that he's in Highschool at the time of the movie.
Do we all remember this chapter of the manga? It's Goku's first time in a big city. He's wandering around, completely unfamiliar with the way things work, who to talk to or trust, or how to get to where he's supposed to get going.

Now swap out Bulma's house for a school.
What if Goku HAS been living in the boondocks for all his life so far? We haven't heard anything to the contrary. All we know is that Gohan's raised him and taught him martial arts, and that the only people confirmed to be familiar with Goku for any period of time are Gohan, and Chi-Chi, described as a "childhood friend."
  • For all we know, the opening parts of the movie could end up a shot-for-shot adaptation of Goku's first time in a city from the manga. Save instead of looking for Bulma's house, he's looking for this school thing Gohan's decided to send him to. We haven't been told much of anything about Chi-Chi's personality or background in the movie, aside from her relationship with Goku. But perhaps she's been one of the few people he's had regular contact with for as long as he can remember, and is his only known acquaintance at the school.

So after wandering around for a few hours on his bike (good choice of transport in the mountains, assuming Kintoun and flying aren't options), getting lost, almost getting hit by a few cars, almost getting mugged, etc... Goku finally finds his way to the school with a policeman's help. By now the school day is half over, and he is ushered to his class.

The lateness, combined with Goku's clueless and carefree happy attitude about the whole ordeal, as well as his apparent academic ineptitude, catches the attention of his classmates. Some folks like Chi-Chi's friend Emi, and a certain nerd named Teto, find him cool in some weird way, and are generally friendly and helpful to him. The resident bully Carey Fuller, however, mistakenly sees Goku as an easy target, and tries picking on him.

When his mind games don't work on Goku (you need brains for that), he gets physical instead. Goku misinterprets the bullying as a challenge to a match, and not realizing that most people aren't as strong as Gohan, Chi-Chi and himself, ends up easily KO'ing Carey later ("You're actually kinda weak, huh?"). Goku gets in trouble, much to his confusion ("But I won! Why are you mad at me?"), and is suspended. Chi-Chi doesn't see Goku again until the birthday feast Gohan throws for him. Emi, Teto, Carey, and the other school people are not seen again in the movie. The school itself, however, is later blown up during the battle with Piccolo.
So, there's one way I think that could work out. The school portions, lasting all of 10 or 15 minutes tops, are over, and haven't changed or affected Goku's character at all. In fact, all they've done is accentuate it, and demonstrate just how different and out of place he is. That, and they've served to introduce some minor characters who likely won't have any further role aside from as Tenkaichi Budokai spectators cheering on Goku and Chi-Chi. Possibly including Bulma, but I couldn't think of a way to fit her in there. If she remains as a few years older than Goku, she probably won't have anything to do with the school anyway.

Spending ten minutes of the movie in a school is no indication whatsoever that it will change him at all, and we've especially been given no suggestion that he's ALWAYS been there. I truly believe and expect the school portions to simply scream "fish out of water" with Goku. Like it did with Gohan, but even moreso. I'm not trying to argue that putting him in a school at all wasn't kind of a dumb and unnecessary choice. All I'm saying is it's by no means a fatal one, and who knows, the creators could end up doing something really interesting with it. Goku is still Goku, whether he's in a city or the country or outer space or the underworld.

Then again, in retrospect, there WAS this one certain incident early on in Goku's life, and it forever changed his character and future actions. However, it had nothing to do with whether he lived in the wilderness or the city. Unless you argue that "there's no deep ravines in the city."

It seems fitting for Chatwins character to be fascinated by a tiny ball of light in the world of Kamehamehas and Dodon Rays.

Well, like I've said before, I'll reserve my final judgment for when I see some movie clips. Until then, I'm just skeptical.

Meh. Even if people are already convinced that they don't wanna see this movie, its nothing worth fighting them over. I mean, unless they promised to go see it with you and you've already bought the ticket, you don't lose anything because some guy is like, "Fuck this movie!"

Even if he is really vocal about it.

I'm still looking forward to this movie, honestly. In spite of my views on Goku, I'm pretty excited for the other characters, especially Piccolo. I may even like Chatwin's character, even if I still don't think it can possibly be recognizable as Goku. But, we'll see.

I'm glad you all are reserving you're opinions for the trailers. Some people are getting ahead of themselves, even though there's hardly anything promoting this movie. I think they can pull this off! :D Let's hope Goku's happy in the movie.

As I said, I'm out of the psychology nonsense so moving on from that....
So, seeing a Dragonball movie poster that gives me the feeling of Chris Sabat growling into my ear about how awesome and hardcore the series is just goes against what I think Dragonball is. Of course, it goes against what I think DBZ is as well, but in America its doomed to have that reputation from now until forever and I stopped nerd raging about that a long time ago.
Well, you have to consider the fact this isn't being made as a Dragonball movie. It's being made as a DBZ origins movie. It may cover Goku's first adventure in the movie verse, it may have Piccolo as the villain, but it's really just DBZ movie 0.
You mean the big, excited eyes followed by a determined look... then a giant goofy smile? I don't see it, but I'm glad you do. Means they're getting something right for someone.
To me, in the most recent poster, he's got this "serious but confused" look. Kind of like a mix of "Gotta save the world!" and "WTF is going on!? Did he just shoot lasers at me!?"

Then they should either add a "Z" to the end and get it overwith or they should give me some evidence that it is, in fact, Dragonball and not Dragonball Z #0.
