I really don't see the problem with that, though. As I look at my collection of already existing films in the series, some of which I like more than the series itself, I can't help but notice that more of them have a grittier feel than the series itself. Last weekend I vegged out Sunday night with a little marathon and watched movies 3,8,9, and 13. So "gritty" isn't so much a problem for me. And there was plenty of dark material in the Daimao Saga.
Awesome... I guess...

Never really found those movies to be "gritty." When I think "gritty" I think "The Dark Knight Returns" or "Watchmen" as opposed to anything in Dragonball. So, when I think of a "gritty" Dragonball, I think of Goku reaching up through the floor, grabbing onto some thug's ankle, and saying, "Welcome to Hell," while pulling him through the floor. That, or I think of Yamcha, just after killing an inmate in a prison he's in, growling something like, "You've got it wrong. I'm not trapped in here with you. You're all trapped in here with me."

I know that's not how the movie's gonna end up, but that was just the image I got in me head when I heard "gritty" and "Dragonball" in the same sentence.

Just as true as Mr.Satan being the strongest in the world(Sarcasm). It's true. Texas Battle said it in an interview. And Chatwin would look sillier as Son Goku if they added the bangs. Think about it.

I don't think so, he'd look more like Goku, and less like a metro sexual on his way to the nearest coffee house for his latte in a trendy Styrofoam cup.

Seriously, all he's missing is the scarf and the man bag.

People can debate forever about anything because no one has the right to change someone's opinion. But I still wouldn't like to debate about this. Because it's ridiculous. I'm not gonna go on a fan boy rant just because a lot of people are criticizing the movie to no end. I'm gonna say this: I have an opinion about the movie. You have one as well. I think we at least need to have a normal conversation about the movie instead of "Chatwin's gay, he's not a good Goku". The movie cannot be the exact same as the original. That would be extremely hard and time consuming. I'm just waiting for someone to go "No it wouldn't. The directors of the upcoming movie had plenty of time, they just got lazy." Because there were restrictions in time. I just want to hear something different for a change. Ya know...something positive. If you hate THIS movie so much, why don't you make your own DragonBall Live Action Movie. I'd love to see it, since yours will OBVIOUSLY be better than the one that's coming out. :?

No-one's trying to change your opinion, they're just stating their own.

Liar.

Honestly though, everyone here is just sharing their thoughts and feelings about the film, because many of us are concerned, we all love Dragonball, and want to see an adaption that does justice to the series we know and love, but you seem to think peoples opinions aren't "constructive", because they aren't all full of positivity and praise for the film.

I'm yet to see you contribute anything "constructive", all you've done thus far is bitch and moan about how unproductive the surrounding conversation is, comments like "Lets see you make a better film" in response to someone's valid criticism aren't just annoying, they're rude.

Many of us here have differing opinions, yet we all manage to be relatively civil to one another, you're the one who comes in telling everyone to simmer down and stop sharing.

Fudge.
(Stupid OC love triangles).

Nah, I'd actually be more accepting of him if he had the bangs. ^^;

Is that actor's real name "Texas Battle"? Yeesh. :? That's pretty on par with that actress who just named her daughter "Sunday Rose".
But maybe he likes his name, who knows.
On hiatus.

It's just that I'm not used to being on the General Discussion part of this forum and hearing so much criticism. I tend to take things the wrong way a lot. Vegetto EX told me this: "As has been explained, please remember that the vast majority of regular posters here are much older than you, much more experienced than you, and while they are more than happy to contribute their knowledge and help their fellow fans... if you just act like a douche bag, you're going to get the same response back at you". I know that I haven't been on this forum long enough to know how everything works and I don't have the best reputation, so I'll refrain from trying to get deep into debates because they always go wrong somehow. But since we're on the internet everything that someone says can make them sound like a douche. So I'll try to be as non argumentative or douche bag sounding as possible.

Man they need to let me interview some of these guys because they aren't asking the right questions! I guess its okay though since the cast and crew are limited by their contracts. Do you guys think of Goku as a "Timeless Warrior" ?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Considering he's based on the wry Monkey King of legend, yes. Whether or not that's what they mean, remains to be seen.

I nearly spit my drink out all over the screen from laughing as I read that. You would have owed me a new computer monitor, or at the very least a new hanky. :P

So Yamcha is Rorschach in this analogy? Now there's a thought...

Of course, now I've stopped worrying about the life-action DragonBall movie in favor of worrying about the live-action Watchmen movie. Curse you!

But anyway, my feelings are that the look of the DragonBall manga and anime is effectively impossible to translate to live-action, so if this movie is going to work in any way it's going to need to develop its own unique visual style. And it does look like they're doing that, based on some of these pictures. I guess for me I won't really care if this movie is extremely different from the original, because no matter how different it is, I can always go back to the manga or anime.

We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.

Not to bring this thought up again, but looking at those latest screenshots and the idea of making the series "gritty" automatically made me think of the live action Super Mario and Ninja Turtles movies. I haven't seen those movies in a while, but I always think about abandoned warehouses with chains everywhere when they're brought up.

That's not to say I'm expecting the worst from this movie. On the contrary, I actually enjoyed the live action Super Mario and Ninja Turtles movies. When the day comes and I catch the midnight showing of this thing, I'll be watching it anticipating a loose adaptation of one of my all-time favorite shows and nothing more.

The first Ninja Turtles movie was awesome, lets hope the Dragonball movie is at least as good.

All that Fox needs to do to make this movie look good is to have a TV channel broadcast the Chinese live action version Dragonball: The Magic Begins. Then no matter what Fox puts out everyone will think it's awesome!

Just want to throw this out there- TMNT is supposed to be gritty. Don't think about the old cartoon and Archie comic. The original comic, by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, and published by Mirage comics, is pretty damn hardcore.
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

You know how Marvel Comics has that Ultimate series ? Like Ultimate Spider-man ? Couldn't the live action movie be considered an "Ultimate Dragon Ball" ? Just wondering.

I think it will/should be considered a "Live Action Dragonball" franchise. I feel like the title "Ultimate" is a little too prestigious for what we will get from this adaptation.
