Dragon Ball country by country in Africa

Post by Dragon Ball Ireland » Tue May 21, 2024 5:31 am

As I've said before I'm assisting Derek Padula carry out research for his future book on the history of Dragon Ball in every country. As of now I'm close to having Scandinavia and the Nordics fully covered. I've noticed theres still a lot of holes in Africa though, so thought maybe a thread for it was in order, as it is a huge continent with a lot of countries, so hopefully by listing them anyone can contribute whatever I'm missing.

South Africa : Not uncommon knowledge but SABC1 and SABC2 aired the Funimation dubs of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball. Z aired as early as July 2002. Around 2011 Kai replaced Dragon Ball Z and aired with the Nicktoons cut of Funimation's dub, and much like Nicktoons the first 98 episodes of Kai were replaced by GT. Final Chapters premiered around December 2019 on SABC2. Super premiered on South Africa's version of Toonami in 2020 breaking the tradition of all Dragon Ball series premiering on one of SABC's channels, although Super was then rerun on SABC2 in 2022.

StarTimes Kungfu also aired the mainland Chinese dub around 2015 or 2016 with English subs, although if promos are to be believed at some point it was replaced by the Funimation dub. StarTimes Kids has aired Dragon Ball Z since at least July 2022 with Funimation's dub, although one unique aspect of these broadcasts is they use an English Head Cha-La

Uganda : As I recall kei17's old website said one of the English dubs aired, I recall someone else saying they had access to StarTimes channels, so I'll guess they had access to that as well as SABC1 and SABC2 through certain packages

Mauritius : The wikis say the English dubs of Broly and Super Hero were shown theatrically

Nigeria : Theatrical releases of Super Hero used the English dub if the fandom wiki is accurate

Ethiopia : Same as Nigeria apparently

Kenya : Ditto to the above two

Zambia : Ditto to the above three

Tanzania : Ditto to the above four

Rwanda : Ditto to the above five

Bahrain : A Satellite Pay TV network offered a way of watching the Cartoon Network UK broadcasts, although I have to assume it was the UK feed, not the Pan-European feed as that didn't include Dragon Ball Z

Bhutan : Definitely no earlier than 1999 as television was banned until that point and even when it launched BBS1 was primarily a news channel, BBS2 launched in 2012 but it was just a general entertainment channel and didn't air anime, so its unlikely any local channels aired Dragon Ball. Apparently the Indian broadcasts were also accessible

Burkina Faso : French channels Game One and Japan One were available on the Canal+ TV selection, fans on Reddit I spoke to remember catching the French Kai broadcasts in 2011. Another French channel Mangas was also available on some packages. Broly and Super Hero got French screenings

Ivory Coast : I recall kei17 saying the French dub aired here, probably through something similar to Burkina Faso. Broly and Super Hero got French screenings

Niger : French dub was aired, I'm guessing the same way it was available for Ivory Coast. Broly and Super Hero got French screenings

Mayotte : Wikis claim French dubs of Broly and Super Hero were screened

Senegal : Canal+ subscription allowed fans to watch the French dubs on Mangas. Apparently Broly and Super Hero were screened in French

Gabon : From what I heard Broly and Super Hero got French screenings

Congo : see Gabon

Cameroon : See Gabon and Congo

Niger : See Gabon, Congo and Cameroon

Guinea : See Gabon, Congo, Cameroon and Niger

Benin : See Gabon, Congo, Cameroon, Niger and Guinea

Togo : See Gabon, Congo, Cameroon, Niger, Guinea and Benin

Mali : See Gabon, Congo, Cameroon, Niger, Guinea, Benin and Togo

Dijbouti : RTD6 aired Dragon Ball Super in 2019. Posts are in French so I'm guessing that's what they aired. Allegedly an unnamed broadcaster aired a Somali dub

Somalia : Assuming the Somali dub exists they must have had access to said Dijbouti channel. I've heard at least one other fan saying they could watch Islamic dubs through Astaan cable, so it was probably the Arabic dubs

Angola : One fan I've spoken to has said Dragon Ball aired around 2003 or 2005 on a local channel called TPA, which aired the Brazillian Portuguese dub. Apparently the English dubs of Broly and Super Hero screenings

Mozambique : Fandom wiki says Broly got screenings with the Portuguese dub, so I'd guess the same would apply to some other countries

Lesotho : Only spoke to one fan but he said Dragon Ball has never aired there as anime and manga is not very popular

Kuwait : Arabic dubs of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z aired on Kuwait Television at some point, I'd guess early to mid-2000s

Qatar : Similar to Kuwait the Arabic dubs aired on a local channel - Qatar Television

Algeria : Télévision Algérienne aired the Arabic dubs of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z

Morocco : 2M aired the Arabic dub around 2008-2010. The broadcast apparently stopped after the early Ginyu episodes and reran from the beginning for a while but in 2012/2013 after the Freeza arc finally premiered they reran Dragon Ball Z from the beginning after its conclusion. From what this individual has said Mangas and Game One were also available to Moroccans through a TV decoder equipped with devices (so I guess TVs) that allowed satellite to switch rotations (for example switching from Nilesat and Astra, the most common packages to Hotbird nd Eutelsat). Another local channel (Al Aoula) aired the Arabic dubs from what I know

Sudan : Don't know anything other than Spacetoon aired here

Tunisia : Don't know anything other than Spacetoon aired here

Egypt : Don't know anything other than Spacetoon aired here

Libya : Don't know anything other than Spacetoon aired here

Mauritania : Don't know anything other than Spacetoon aired here

Yemen : Don't know anything other than Spacetoon aired here

Madagascar : Don't have any info on this country

Zimbabwe : Don't have any info on this country

Chad : Don't have any info on this country

Namibia : Don't have any info on this country

Cabo Verde : Don't have any info on this country

Cote d'Ivoire : Don't have any info on this country

Liberia : Don't have any info on this country

Botswana : Don't have any info on this country

Burundi : Don't have any info on this country

Malawi : Don't have any info on this country

Central African Republic : Don't have any info on this country

Eritrea : Don't have any info on this country

Eswatini : Don't have any info on this country

Ghana : Don't have any info on this country

Western Sahara : Don't have any info on this country

Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco (via satellite), Qatar, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Yemen, and maybe others all got Spacetoon.

Long shot, but did any African territories get their own translation of the manga or home releases (however obscure)?
