Recasts that ended up being better than the original

Post by TheRed259 » Tue May 28, 2024 5:25 pm

In your opinion, are there any recasts in the original Japanese version and/or the various dubs around the world that ended up being better than the original?

I really mightily disagree but there are many Kai recasts people liked better. I dont agree. The closest I have is Bulma in the Boo saga but not that Rocio Garcel was bad but Monica Manjarez take sold the fact Bulma was older now better. And ANY Mr Satan Latin American voice until Kai, NO VOICE of his was awful.

And if I am cheating a bit EVERYONE from the Latin American OG Dragon Ball Redub, you just cant go wrong with the cast from the redub, despite the Zero y el dragon magico being dubbing legends in their own right.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!

It just occurred to me, JOSE LAVAT as the narrator. Carlos Bercerril as the first narrator was good, but he was more of a quirky comedy narrator, Lavat is Yanami in that he sells the ancient legend feel better. Lavat's best performance is him narrating Krillin's death. That is ONE recast that was extremely better than the first actor.

Not in the Japanese, but there are a few in English:
  • Ian James Corlett was better than Nesty Calvo Ramirez as adult Goku from what I've heard of the latter
  • I preferred Lalainia Lindbjerg to Wendy Lee as Bulma
  • Alistair Abell over Eric Vale as Future Trunks (Westwood eventually caught up with Funimation, but the latter infamously got a head start)
  • If the Frontier Enterprises dub existed I'm willing to bet Barbara Goodson was an improvement as kid Goku as I've not heard great things about their dubs, but maybe we should wait till that dub is found, if by some miracle it ever is

Sean Schemmel, once he got the hang of voice acting was a step up from Peter Kelamis as Goku

While Kohei Miyauchi was still the goat, I do think Masaharu Satō was a mass improvement as Kame Sennin over Hiroshi Masuoka . Similarly, I'm not huge on Mike McFarland's Roshi, but I do think he was a lot better than Don Brown's horrible attempt at an old man performance.

Most of the recast on the English side for Kai were for the best

Tanaka Mayumi's Uranai Baba. I know that there is a (misogynistic) history of men playing women in The Theater, but I really do hate it when a cis man plays any kind of woman. Women have a hard enough time getting any kind of role/work, so I was glad when Tanaka took over the role.

Obligatory mention for Chris Ayres, an amazing performance that is half the reason Kai is the superior version if you're a fan of the English dub. I truly regret I never got the chance to meet him, he seemed like such a wonderful person.

Although I'm not a fan of DB's English dubs, every once in a while I watch an English episode just out of curiosity, one recast I liked was Doc Morgan as the narrator.

Finally there was a narrator in the franchise who doesn't exaggerate what he is telling and speaks naturally.

I agree. Along with Chris Ayres, he was one of the best recasts from the FUNi dub of Kai.

His historian-like narration is way better than Kyle Hebert's TLC reality or Discovery documentary narration.
A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years :)

I guess if we're mentioning Funi Kai recasts then the OP would define the "original" as the original cast of a company's dub, not in the language in general. I was mentioning Harmony Gold and Creative Corp Product actors because they are both English dubs and predate Funimation's dubs of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z respectively.

I don't mean to be pernickety, I'm just conscious because we've seen even people refer to the inhouse cast as the "original English voice of X character", likely because they weren't exposed to the Ocean cast in the 90s, but I think it's important fans are educated on this and the fact there were dubs before that even.
