Videl Devil?

That exchange was hilarious in the manga. And have to admit, before reading that, like Krillin, I had never heard of a gay bad guy before at that time. And though the Toonami version cut it, in the dub of the second-to-last ep, the gay guy in black leather is still coming on to Trunks.

My guess is that since "Videl" is a lot less obvious than "Satan" they saw no need to censor it for TV. Similar to their subtlty with Blue. People who 1) aren't paying attention and 2) don't know that Toriyama puns everything wouldn't have the faintest clue what "Videl" is from.

Yeah, soccer moms are going to easily pick up on Mr. "Satan," but who exactly is going to hear anything wrong with "Videl"? Especially if they can't see the spelling (which is the only way you could pick up on the pun, really. And even then, it takes a while to notice, even for Dragon Ball fans, as this topic shows).

And on top of that, Videl's name pun only makes sense in light of her father's name. With that already censored, there's no reason for them to suspect her name has any demonic connections.

While we're on the subject wouldn't it just have been easier for them to mispronounce Satan? They could have just called him Mr. Sat-In instead of Sate-In. Seems like less work then searching through different languages for an alternative name. I guess we're lucky he didn't end up having an American name like Bob.

Or maybe they could have called him Sabat?

What does that mean?
Soccer moms are those overprotective mothers who stay at home and brag about how their son and or daughter are so special, smart and witty. They then will get into their mini-vans and drive their kids to soccer practice, there said mother will brag about her special little kid(s) to the other mothers and they will vigorously brag too and for the remainder of the practice they will all have an ego jack off fest vicariously living through their children. After that is said and done the kids will go home to watch T.V and she will see too much violence on "The Power Rangers". The soccer mom will cry for awhile and scream "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" to her husband who wonders why he even married this psychopath. She will call the company 5 out of the 7 days in the week and complain to everybody she can get in touch with, start a petition to the get the show banned and trash talk it to all the other soccer mothers until the show is dumbed down even more, rinse wash and repeat.

That is the life of a soccer mom...everyone knows at least one.

You know, I also wonder how many miss "Pan" also being a pun on devil. It means bread, I know, but "Pan" is also a name for the devil.

While I don't think it was the case for that situation, it isn't uncommon for a character's traits to be played up for the purpose of satisfying the audience when he gets his comeuppance.
Only because devout Christian housewives see homosexuality as immoral, and have nothing to do between lunch and dinner but ruin other people's shit.

I don't think it's too outrageous or psychotic that a parent may show some concern in what their child is watching. If they see that a television network is behaving irresponsibly, they have the right to challenge it.

I think "frying pan" is the pun that comes to mind first for English speakers. Especially cause 'Pan' is a really rare name for the devil.

Hey, she could've been "Persephone". 8)

Just to be nit-picky, but Pan isn't actually a name for the devil, but rather a Greek god whose distinguishing characteristics were later applied to the devil by Christians, who considered all pagan deities to be demons. He wasn't an especially evil guy for the ancient Greeks. Anyway, in DragonBall Forever's name pun guide, Toriyama says that Gohan's daughter gets her name from bread. There was no intended connection to the Greek Pan, though it is a neat coincidence.

Sure, that's fine. But that's not what soccer moms do. Soccer moms sit their 8 year old kids down in front of a brand new copy of GTA they just bought the kid, or the TV showing this or that, and then go on about their business until they see blood, sex, or 'misused religious elements' that they don't think their child should be exposed to.... and then bitch about how everyone else is at fault.

This reminds me of the lady I met at Suncoast while I was living in Florida. I was in browsing around the anime section one day. There was a lady there talking to a friend of hers. They were shopping for a movie for her kid's birthday. Little kid. Like 10, I think it was. So I'm looking over some VHSes of DBZ movies 1-3 (oi, now I feel old) and hear them talking about what he'd like and the mother said something along the lines of "I don't know, let's just pick up a cartoon, that'd be the best I think."

So, I glance over to see what they grab and... she picks up a hentai. Didn't look at the cover, at the back, at anything. Just picked it up and turned to walk to the counter. I decided it'd be a good idea to straighten her out and told she didn't want to get that for her kid, it was a hentai movie. And she's like "Uh, what's that? It's just a cartoon."

Of course, I then tell her it's 'animated porn' and she, and her friend, look at me like I'm some weirdo. So I had them read the back of the case and they looked utterly dumbfounded. Her friend then nearly yelled "Why would they make porn for kids!?"

Seriously.

So I'm like "It's not for kids." and her response is "But it's a cartoon!" I then had to explain the concept that not all cartoons are for kids. Loony Toons wasn't intended for kids when it was first made and Japan, the place were most of the shows and movies in the section they were currently in came from, makes cartoons for every age group from little kid to adult. Which is why you should always read the box and check the rating, they've got ratings for a reason.

So yeah, they put it back and asked me for a sugestion. I asked if they'd ever heard of Dragonball, lady said her kid liked it, so I handed her the copy of Dead Zone I'd been holding.

The sad thing is, this still happens, on a daily basis I'm sure. I've seen complaints like this a few times (from the mother's "I bought my son a cartoon and it was porn!") and from store employees I knew who'd have at least 1 return a month with the parent explaining it was "too violent" or "too sexual" for their kid and that these things should be "explained before we buy something".

And let's not forget my FAVORITE incident which occured at the local Gamestop. Lady came in ranting and raving one day that she was going to sue the store for selling her son, and I quote, "violent porn". She then produces a copy of God of War and continues to rave. The lady behind the register checks their records with the receipt the woman provides and, lo-and-behold, the store DIDN'T sell the game to her son. They sold it to her.

Wow, Xyex... I've run in to a few situations... such as where I saw this old guy picking up a Hentai DVD! I was at fye... and I was searching for DBZ DVDs and a lotta people messed up the order of them... so I decided I would rearrange them... (Call me a DBZ geek... -_-) and then I see this guy just sneakily walking past the video games section and then BAM! he's right there... he knocked down the 18+ steel piece that covered the cover of the DVD... I'm staring at him... and then I just run like hell right away! Man... creepy. But anyway... yeah Videl. lol Man... DBZ is SO AWESOME!!!!! :D Been a fan for 10 years... (I'm 14...)
