Vegeta's Crew Cut

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

:?: What plot hole?
I could have sworn that at one point it was said that Saiya-jins cannot or do not cut their hair and they keep the same hair style throughout their life.
It was stated pure blood Saiya-jin hair does not grow.

Vegeta to Bulma after she asks why his hair didn't grow while he was in the Time Chamber: "Pure-blooded Saiyans have thankfully been spared the grotesquery of 'hair growth'."

However, Goku's hair was cut by Tao Paipai's sword back in Dragonball. It grew back to normal.

So, Saiyans can cut their hair, they just don't. Probably because it'll stop growing on its own.

That's the plot hole I was talking about! I knew there was some plot hole in GT revolving around the fact that Vegeta's hair changed and then went back to how it was.

So if Saiyan hair CAN be cut, and just grows back to its shape very quickly, then Vegeta probably could maintain that hairdo; he'd just have to trim it back down practically every day.

The mustache, on the other hand, is and shall forever remain an enigma.

We see multiple instances it gets cut in the anime.

Are any of them in the manga?

Saiyans can obviously grow facial hair. Nappa, anyone?

It's plausible he was born with that mustache (as funny as that seems).

I figured that the facial hair and other such follicular (is that a word?) abnormalities only start happening once a Saiyan is past their prime. Nappa, King Vegeta, GT Vegeta... were all getting up there in years. Nappa even apparently had a good head of hair once.

But that was Dragonball, before any of this Saiyan stuff was ever thought up. In Z, nothing contradicts what Vegeta said. Also, theres the whole idea of "Saiyan hair only growing within its original perimeters", which (if you want) explains why Goku's hair grows back in Dragonball.

I've always understood that Saiyan hair grows quickly, up to a certain point. Since human hair grows slowly but endlessly, half-Saiyan hair grows quickly and endlessly (Gohan in the RoSaT).

I speculate that, similar to Saiyan tails which grow back on children but not adults, Saiyan hair would never grow back if it was cut on an adult (Like Vegeta in GT).

I also speculate that if Nappa doesn't shave/wax a la Krillin, he went bald plain and simple.

As for facial hair: I assumed, as SSjKaboom did, that it was a maturity thing. Vegeta can probably grow one whenever he wants, just by concentrating.

Vegeta's hair does start growing back. When he's got a mustache, his hair's trimmed flat. His spikes grow back over the course of GT.

And why wouldn't he? Freddie is to singing, as Super Saiyajin is to fighting. Legendary.

That aside, my favorite part about GT is how domesticated Vegeta is, and indeed, everyone is. There's the odd character where this treatment doesn't suit them (Goten comes to mind), but most characters feel natural from where we left them (Mr. Satan comes to mind, with how he dotes on Pan).

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Only part of the bottom text is about Toriyama's designs. They are character models for several years after the final chapter of DragonBall. It says that the staff was particulary shocked by Vegeta. The word "shocked" is written unusually, with the kanji for "laugh", I guess implying that they were shocked into laughter. It says that the females' hair sytles have been changed to be...well, they use a word that could either mean "delicate" or "questionable". It also notes that Goten seems to have stopped growing.

I'm a huge Goku fanboy, no doubt about it, but even I squirm when Goten and Trunks prepare to make Gotenks, and Goku shouts for them to give him their energy. >_<

Yes, that's the page I was referring to with all of Toriyama's designs. And no, Don Kia is not part of those design sketches, if anyone is getting that impression; that's just art of him for his entry in the book's encyclopedia, which is also on that page.

When you guys were talking about Saiyan hair, I had always been under the impression that Saiyan hair was sort of like a mane in the sense that it maintains a certain length and shape, but dead strands still fall out and new ones still grow in its place. I don't think that Vegeta meant that Saiyan hair was completely unchanging... 'cause that kinda wouldn't make sense. Hair couldn't last a lifetime of getting scorched and pulled... it would break and fall out eventually, right?
