Heck, saw on first season He-Man set, they said some parent groups were protesting violence in the show before it even aired, and that's why they put the PSAs in the eps.
Wow... people were complaining about He-Man? I'm surprised they didn't go after Thundercats, what with Cheetara's semi-nudity in an episode (the first?)
Anyway, I recall reading somewhere that the issue to some isn't the quality of the cartoons - it's the fact that it's only these cartoons being shown. When I was a kid, Cartoon Network was still showing Scooby-Doo in primetime - or my own as-a-kid definition of primetime, 7:00 every weeknight. Now, all you see are cartoons made in this era, and that's the issue. Even Boomerang is suffering, showing garbage like THE Batman.
I grew up on reruns of Thundercats, Flinstones, Scooby-Doo, and many others. So I missed the original runs, big deal! What matters to me is that I remember so much about these cartoons.
edit - also, I love how Tom and Jerry has to be censored because apparently when they blow up, it shows blackface. I am PROUD to say that - along with my friends when I tell them of situations like this - I had no idea what blackface was until I looked it up. Maybe I'm naive, or maybe I have a group of naive friends; but that's how the world is now. These forms of racial humor have evolved to become less offensive, and more in a line of parody. I don't possibly see how a cat having a black face after an explosion is offensive :/.
edit 3 - found another. How bout just a link to this one?
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
